R2D2 - The Kenny Gag

When I bring my R2D2 to events I often get asked about the two legged "Kenny" model droid used in the early films. When you see R2D2 in the films with his third center leg down, that was the RC robot they made for scenes where he had to be fast. When he's just got two legs, it's almost always the late actor Kenny Baker operating R2 for those scenes. About a year ago I was at an event and a 7 year old kid was following me around, trying to look inside the dome, convinced there was a little person inside of there, and it occurred to me, I should make some gag sound bytes to suggest this. I also wanted to get a fake magicians hand to come out of the larger dome panel on an actuator or servo as part of it (still on the todo list). This June 2024 I attended DROIDCON and approached Michael Baddelly, who had made the trip from the UK, about doing a voice-over and he did those all in one take in an improvised sound studio I had made in a nearby closet.

Star Wars Scrubber Droid Racing at Droidcon 2024

These scrubbers are Arrma Senton RC trucks with an Action Packer tote on top, with a few other mods. These are going 40-50 MPH, often aiming for each other in a ridiculous jousting smash up derby. CHAOS! I was thoroughly entertained.. Thanks to the G1L droid providing commentary.

Just a quick demo of the arduino, FTDI, light strips and neopixels and how the simple (and ugly) blinking sequence is done. I did this at midnight before a Comicon if I remember correctly, so someday I will tidy and tighten it

Progress Video 2 on my 3D printed IG-12 (or IG-11 with modifications) build. 3D files are from Droid Division. He's done in PLA plus but if I was to do it again I'd go PETG. I left some parts in sunlight to dry and they warped. PLA is not out-door friendly. Paint is all Canadian Tire Duplicolor Perfect Match.
