I lived in Chicago for over a decade and that hard edge is similar in public spaces. I recently visited both places and New Yorkers were MUCH ruder, especially in regards to me having a 6-year-old with me. She almost got pushed over by perfectly normal-looking young people (who definitely saw her but were bothered by children). People on the planes to or from NY were openly hostile to us simply because we had a child. One older woman even asked us to move and my daughter didn't even do anything wrong. I can take a hard edge just fine, but NY was awful and much, much dirtier than Chicago. Actually, it was worse than Chicago in almost every way - rude, expensive, dirty, and apparent disdain for children is a part of the culture. "Midwestern nice" is real, and we still keep our eyes to ourselves on the subway and watch our backs. Having a challenging life is not an excuse to be a total jerk, but the most pretentious city in America thinks so. Never again. New York is over-rated.

Exactly, everyone is afraid of everyone. Living in NY is NOT a natural human experience. You say you just LOOK angry but that is because you are. This whole angry on the outside, happy on the inside is BS! You just have ego happiness but your body is not happy, it's cold and dark. NY says it's survival of the fittest but anyone can see you all lose. You may have money but you are poor, poor, poor on the inside and anyone from the country can feel it.

I heard 8 seconds and by your demeanor and tone I already sense the NY coldness. NY has no moral fiber or heart. People pride themselves on being cutthroat. Go to a small town or smaller midwest city and you won't survive with that attitude. People rely on one another and respect is paramount. NY has no emotional intelligence. It's just about being the loudest, the most brutal, and the darkest. At some point you're really saying a lot about yourself by choosing to live around such people.
