Can you dilute the acid to just remove light, surface rust, but not the plated or painted surfaces?

Hold the steel in tension while you make your vees. The vee expands and isn’t allowed to move, so it swells. When it cools, the vee shrinks.

I saw a picture of this car 20 years ago and it has stuck with me all this time. I have searched high and low for this car trying to get the right algorithm Joe. I'd love to see this design do a 7 or 6 second pass on the quarter mile , ( with a full roll cage of course ).

Instead of using water to dilute the acid use white vinegar and emidiatly dry them off. Your still gonna get a little rust but no where's what water does

There are a lot of misunderstandings about cooling. The main thing to know is that (for mild steel, in ordinary situations) it doesn't matter if you use water (preferably from a sprayer) or let it cool over time, but what IS important is that every time you heat a spot, the surrounding metal must be cool for that spot to cause maximum shrinkage. This means that all but the smallest jobs will take considerably longer if you don't accelerate the cooling process. In this particular case, the second row of spots in between the first ones would have had little or no effect, because the surrounding metal had become quite hot. What is needed for maximum shrinkage is a very sudden difference in temperature around the boundary of the red-hot spot (and the spot needs to be small for sheetmetal, maybe 12-15 mm diameter). You want the surrounding metal to stay in the same plane, and fight the expansion of the red spot. This forces the metal to thicken at the spot, then when the spot cools, it has to go back to its original volume. Some of this shrinkage comes from the thickness but most of it comes from the diameter (the latter being what you are aiming to achieve). If your spot worked, you will feel it is thicker locally when you lightly run your fingertips over the surface after it has cooled. It the spot is too large, the sheetmetal will go out of plane (buckle) instead of fighting the diameter expansion, and if the metal is too hot around the spot, it will be too weak to fight it, so in either case you won't get enough thickening (also called "upsetting") which is the key enabling factor for this method to work.

I hate to write this. It is very painful. Our friend Joe Pinkston, one of the coolest guys I ever met, passed away this morning while sleeping. He was an exceptional man. A builder, a talented wood worker, a master mechanic and car builder and a man who could ride a unicycle indoors while drinking a beer. He would bring rockets over for our grand kids & put on a fireworks display. He would solve any building problems and answer any car, truck or car questions you could come up with. He was a kind, funny and innovative man and we're going to miss him terribly. Sleep easy Joe. Harry

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joe 🙏 Just found this youtube channel about a week ago and have been binge watching ever since. So sad I won't see the beautiful Rat Rod be finished by Joe but even sadder is the fact Joe the creator, artist, engineer, fabricator, craftsman, artisan, and dreamer of the Zen Coupe himself has passed. Rest In Peace My Friend 😥

Hey Joe if you use acid to clean rust or Mill scale you have to neutralize it on the steel or it will flash rust. All you need is baking soda and water. This will stop the reaction and keep it from oxidizing. You can also get a weld film which is like a thin pV glue to wipe over the steel with a sponge. This will stop any oxidation and when you get ready to weld you can just wipe it off with a wet rag just prior to welding. Tips and tricks and share the wisdom with others it's all part of the journey of life.

You need to neutralize the muriatic acid with a base like baking soda and water slurry or else it keeps on eating away and and reacting with the metal to form that surface rust. Rinsing off with water isn't enough. First neutralize for several minutes, then rinse with water.

Damn thats freaking genius the R&P will move precisely with the axle But the problem i see is the steering shaft will move as the suspension flexes which may well cause a bump steer like effect i think you can minimalize this by strategically placing universal the steering shaft though Edit:good call on the universal joint

Hello all, I am doing good.I just had an MRI. It showed no evidence of disease and no tumors. Around last thanksgiving when We were just starting the new house,I was on the patio with the house plans discussing the build with my concrete concrete contractor- then I got Dizzy and he helped me into my house. My wife is a nurse and she brought me to see the Dr. The Dr sent me to get an mri that day and it showed 3 Brain tumors.I have Glioblastoma multiform. Then we went to memorial Herman hospital in Huston . Brain surgery #1 they removed 2 tumors. Then after that healed Brain surgery # 2 in Tyler tx they removed 1. I have never felt like What I thought cancer was supposed to feel.however very early on I felt like I had a stroke. I had a limp and was slow on my right side. And my signature was only about3/4” long. I was all better right after the first surgery. Im better now and feel great. House is mostly done . I will post some photos in a minute.
