About:
After the OGL (Open Gaming License) scandal of 2023, Jakin decided to try TTRPGS (Tabletop Roleplaying Games) other than D&D (Dungeons & Dragons). He tried Pathfinder 2e (Second Edition) and even streamed it with his friends. After a few sessions, it was clear the game wasn't for him. He enjoyed being a player, but not running the game. Later that year, he attended GenCon with the OSQ (One Shot Questers) crew and got to play test the Dungeon Coach's DC20. Ever since then, Jakin has been obsessed with game. He quickly convinced all of his current D&D home games to convert to the DC20 system and he hasn't looked back. In this video, Jakin explains the many languages of DC20. He starts with listing the four categories: Mortal, Exotic, Divine, and Outer. He then goes on to explain that all PCs know Common, which is different than the Human language. For the rest of the Mortal languages, there are Dwarvish, Elvish, Halfling, and Gnomish. Next, he explains that the Exotic languages include Giant, Draconic, Orcish, Fey, and Elemental. Next, he explains that the Divine languages include Celestial and Fiendish. Finally, he goes onto explain the one Outer language, Deep Speech.

    Great video. The dice system I am finding more interesting atm is called Monad Echo, it is used in Broken Tales and instead of increasing the number of dice in your pool, skills etc. remove dice. Players only fail when rolling a 1 so lower dice means higher chance of success.

    Another lesson we can learn from the Indiana Jones movies: shorter campaigns often are preferable 😅and as good as Raiders is, the players realy lost all their agency at the end of the adventure 😁

    A single die system gives an equal chance of getting any number on the die. A two die system allows for a range in which the numbers on the end of the scale are rarer allowing for a greater range of results good or bad. I like two D6 with 6 7 8 being the most common results possible and 2 3 or 11 12 being the less common results good or bad. BUT it works best with tables of results prepared in advance.

    I'm a dicepool girl lol. WoD is great, FATE is great, but I understand the % systems pretty well. My own system is an accumulated dice pool giving the number of successes in 10s added up on the roll. So on average each 2d10 equals to 1 success, and the more one tries to add for extra swing, the more that rule gets enforced by odds.

      @@swordplaysorcery it makes the rest of the languages valuable and something to think about. Basically you can't convey complex things that aren't mercantile in nature without a shared language check - one for you and one for each listener to understand it.

    I really like the language check because it’s a super easy mechanic that allows DMs to actually utilize languages without having to think of something on the fly or make some complex mechanic in order to give language meaning. I have already and feel confident to use language checks when the time arises for them bc it’s an easy mechanic that I can implement quickly that makes players feel good about their languages.

    One question I had after downloading the game is that the classes are only defined for levels 1 and 2 at the moment? Do we need to be on the Patreon to see the levels 3+? Because I cannot imagine running a DC20 campaign if it stops at level 2, especially as a GM who loves high-stakes campaigns (Exalted being my favorite RPG). I do understand that it's still under construction, obviously, and that balance could be way off still. But I could cope with that.

    • @swordplaysorcery
      @swordplaysorcery Před 29 dny

      Currently, everyone has access to levels 1-2. The finished game will have all classes going to level 10 and then the option to have prestige levels after that! So, even though class levels are capped at 10, there technically won't be a max level cap for your character like D&D

    personally I rather have a rules heavy system, it might be a little harder to get into pf1e or d&d3.5, but the breadth of 3rd party content they support is insane nowadays, I feel so constricted when I try 5e. Pf2e is a bit better, but I'd want like another decade of class/archetypes/spells/feats/traits/options for it like it's predecessor already offers. The extra rules in pf1e are also quite helpful in lightening the load for DMs as they don't have to improvise so much. And now that I've played it for a while it's pretty easy for me to help new players learn the system while they're in my games.

  • @DragonElixion
    @DragonElixion Před měsícem

    This video highlights a lot of this issues I have with a lot of the upcoming "new systems". They are so much like 5e, and if you play 5e, they will be so easy to play... So why don't I just play 5e?? Most tables homebrew things that don't work so they do work, so unless I'm starting a brand new table with people who don't have a lot of experience, playing something so 5e-adjacent is just gonna end up with us tweaking the rules we like the same way we did with 5e until our tweaked DC20 looks just like our tweaked 5e. So there's literally no point. Making 5e clones just means I gotta shell out a fortune for a whole new list of books. Don't get me wrong, WotC have done me no favours and I don't actually buy official D&D titles anymore, but I started collecting books years ago, so I have dozens of 5e compatible books, and there are new 3rd-party content books for 5e every month - I'll never run out of game ideas. So why am I learning a bunch of small, intricate rules to subtly change the system I've already refined with my current tables?? Drastically different systems, or systems that bridge between two different systems for a happy-medium, systems with a lower bar to entry or a drastically higher complexity, that's what is interesting. Something *different*, not something similar but maybe a bit better depending on preferences. Something, something, quote about thinking outside but pressed right up against the box. Don't give me a refined 5e experience and expect me to discard the thousands of dollars of resources I've already got just so I can start the drawn out process of shelling out (potentially, especially if it's successful) thousands more. If 5e is so bad that you need a different system, then make something that not easily mistaken for 5e. And if 5e works but you just don't want to support WotC, like me, for every official D&D 5e/5.5e release there are DOZENS of 3rd-party content releases from people who absolutely deserve your money and support.

    I've always been disappointed with d20 systems. The d20 is too dynamic to properly model a skill. It's not fun when your 5th level Dwarf Barbarian completely misses several times in multiple combat scenes. I know; it happened to me in a recent Gen Con tournament. Dice pools are too messy and require too much mental overhead. Percent-based systems are a phycological let down. It's not very fun or heroic knowing I only have a 40% chance to hit. Abstracting the actual percent is a very important part of roleplaying games. In the game I'm designing, bell-curve is the only sensible option.

    I'll look for a review of DC20 when its out, but it's probably not going to be my thing. I wasn't very enamoured with either 5e or PF2, and have gone back to 3e and started home brewing it to be more GURPS or Rolemaster like. Which, is just a very different kind of TTRPG. That said, I've also been considering dropping rolled damage.

  • @DND20

    My dice system has dice work like spells slots, you have a number of dice and when you roll you can use a d4 (like a cantrip) or spend one of your higher dice (d6, d8, etc) if you still have those left. The average attribute has 1d6 and 1d8 or 3d6

    5e converts might have a hard time wrapping their heads around this. Lockpicking uses the lockpicking trade, not the slight of hand skill. Acting uses the theater trade, not the performance skill. I far prefer the distinction between trades and skills in DC20 because it becomes clear that certain characters simply CAN'T do things they're untrained at. Good 5e DMs already knew to account for this, but DC20s system just makes it more clear.

    Tis seems more like just the basics systems. There are more dice system's, and ive grown to like ones that arent just binary results (succes/fail). The Wrath & Glory is a d6 pool system, but has 1 die a dif color that could cause complications or boosts to your roll.

  • @subterranean327
    @subterranean327 Před měsícem

    The skill and attribute system is another HUGE thing I love about DC20. In general, 5e ability scores and skills make logical sense but don't always work out well mechanically. (I.e. Too many skills that it's NEVER worth it to take proficiency in.) One of the hardest things about making a TTRPG is finding the balance between "real world logic" and mechanical intuitiveness. DC20 does a better job of finding the balance than any system I've seen.

    Wasn't it actually MEANT to be 5th edition with little upgrades? I see a lot of those arguments around but so far what I've seen of Tales of the Valiant is exactly what they advertised. Did all those people giving ToV a bad name just build expectation based only on what they wanted and not what was offered?

    • @swordplaysorcery
      @swordplaysorcery Před měsícem

      I think it’s a bit of both! While true that it has always been 5e with upgrades, they didn’t heavily advertise it that way, at least at first. Additionally, it didn’t help the content creators weren’t making that point very clear when talking about the game. I’m excited to dive into the system when it releases!

    Intimidation being a might skill is an example of why dc20 is not for me. Alan is a great guy, but his logic is not very logical to me.

    • @subterranean327
      @subterranean327 Před měsícem

      The problem with intimidation being a purely charisma-based skill is it doesn't account for imposing physicality. A player tries to intimidate an NPC; which is skill is that? It depends! Did the player make a threatening remark like, "It would be a shame if something happened to you," OR did the player act physically imposing and yell something? The skill could be Influence or Intimidation. In D&D, you might have a special intimidation ability, but you get it from a class that forces you into strength instead of charisma, so it's not very effective. Example: Berserker Barbarian; Intimidating Presence at 10th level, but the saving throw is based on Charisma. Facepalm!

    My top game for 2024 is Cloudbreaker Alliance. It has been in playtest for the past year (the free public playtest is still available). It has been officially released although right now it is only available for purchase through itch (I received my copy through backer kit, I had never heard of itch until he put his game on there). I think he is adding it to drivethru rpg soon. 2d6 counter apocalyptic setting. Easy to learn with inherent multiclassing and unique lifeforms along with some familiar ones that have a different twist. Combat and exploration skills are distinctly separated so being good in combat doesn't affect your roleplay or adventuring skills. Weapons and damage spells have a base damage and you add the excess (number over the targets defense) to your base damage for total damage.
