2004 Geordie Lynd (Vermont) 000-size guitar
zhlédnutí 85Před 14 dny
This is a 2004 Geordie Lynd 000-size guitar that he made at a local guitar school’s workshop. It’s extremely light in construction and, as such, it had a variety of falling-apart things going on with it. @ancel_coburn patched it up like a champ, though, and now it’s got a big, full, mellow, old-time sort-of voice that’s quite endearing. #geordielynd #acousticguitar #boutiqueguitar #guitarschool...
1924 Vega Little Wonder big-rim tenor banjo
zhlédnutí 134Před 14 dny
Here’s a 1924 Vega Little Wonder tenor banjo with a big old rim and the short, 21” scale length preferred for Celtic or “truly old-school” jazz cats. It’s got a loud, punchy voice and sounds fantastic. I’ve given it a level/dress of the frets, some binding re-repair, and setup work and it’s playing bang-on and ready to serve. #vegabanjo #vegatenorbanjo #vegabanjos #vegaboston #tenorbanjo #vinta...
1880s Merida (Boston-made?) parlor guitar
zhlédnutí 189Před 14 dny
This is a local’s 1880s Merida parlor guitar - spruce over Brazilian rosewood and ladder-braced - and it has a lot of features that resemble Bay State/Haynes builds but some that don’t. I’d imagine it was probably built in Boston considering that. It has a Martin-like, shallow-v neck profile with a pretty tight (~7”) radius to the board. I gave this one a neck reset, crack repairs, fretwork, an...

zhlédnutí 226Před 14 dny
Here’s a 1960s Harmony H1270 12-string jumbo guitar. It’s had a neck reset, fret level/dress, new fully-compensated saddle, and other minor work to get it playing bang-on. These are lovely 12-strings and, if you can manage the big necks, highly rewarding. They’re like the ultimate “big old Leadbelly contraption.” @ancel_coburn did most of the work and it’s a player! #harmonyh1270 #harmonysovere...
1940s Kay jumbo guitar
zhlédnutí 228Před 14 dny
This is a local’s 1940 Kay jumbo guitar. It’s an odd one - I’ve not handled one with the cool lobster-claw pickguard before. It’s built as-normal - ladder bracing, small soundhole, big 17” body - but has some nicer aesthetic upgrades compared to their usual fare. @gullicoal106 Tim did a great job on this. We tag-teamed the neck reset and then he did the rest - a bridge replacement, fret level/d...
1934 Harmony size 5 mahogany parlor guitar
zhlédnutí 170Před 14 dny
This is a 1934 Harmony size 5 parlor guitar - like a 3/4 model with a 21” or so scale - what we call “terz” guitars. It’s tuned to standard, here, but once upon a time in the 1800s a guitar like this would have been tuned up to G-G standard instead. This guy is solid mahogany throughout and has a great, chunky, woody, old time sort-of sound. It’s also adorable. #harmonyguitar #harmonyguitars #v...
1920s Oscar Schmidt Stella 0-size guitar
zhlédnutí 164Před 14 dny
This is a 1920s Oscar Schmidt Stella 0-size guitar with a tailpiece load, solid birch throughout the body, ladder-bracing, and a kick-butt pearloid-veneered fretboard. The decals on the top are in good order, it has gold purfling, and a wild original pickguard. What’s not to love? This one fought becoming a guitar again but after a lot of repairs, I’ve got it buttoned-up and humming. #stellagui...

Here’s a local player’s 1950s United-made “Royalist” parlor guitar. These are all-ply, sturdy as heck, and always need neck resets and fretwork to be their best. This is an 1832 J. Wait “bass viol” (often called a “church bass” or “yankee bass”) made in Whately, MA. Andy spent a lot of blood, sweat, and tears getting this thing back together as the folk construction of the instrument and then successive repairs over time meant it was completely out of order when it arrived - a back that no longer fit, a bad neck joint, splits all over, you name it. I've got one I bought new in 1985. It sounds okay, though the trings are probably 30 years old! It has pretty much sat all these years while I played guitar and pursed my profession. Picked it up a few weeks ago and started learning banjo, and really having fun. But it's not the easist instrument to play (high action, very narrow neck) and now I'm buy a new banjo which is much more playable. But I'm keeping the Chicago. But Harmony got all the key points to make it a respectable musical instrument. I owned two Harmony Sovereign guitars, which were classic inexpensive guitars but good sound (if lousy action). The banjo reminds me of the guitar.

    Man I love that guitar it’s a tasteful take on the much loved and hated Fernandez vertigo, in which I have one that I bought from Japan and I love very much. Did you have a Alamo fiesta that someone put a a gold foil pick up in the bridge? There’s pictures of a beautifully done one on Google that look at all the time that has your name associated with it I would really like that if you had it

    I love my 2001 D-03. Bought her used some years ago and she has come into her own sonically speaking. Balanced and speaks well. The Larrivee guitars I believe give you the best value for money especially the 03 (and 02 if you can find one). The more expensive models are well worth the money and offer excellent sound and value.

  • @Grindstaff09
    @Grindstaff09 Před 5 dny

    Pretty good. I have the same vibrochamp that I use along with a supro for a deluxe reverb sound. How have you taken to the quilter vs tube?

    • @jakewildwood
      @jakewildwood Před dnem

      I went back and forth. My main goal for the Quilter was to have something reliable and neutral for the shop, but the average customer wants tube, so now I have another ToneKing in there for demos and a huge assortment of vintage tube amps for people to buy/try. For live and recording with electric instruments I have switched from Quilters to the UA amp pedal range... which is so close to the real thing that if you do minor EQ adjustments in post you're not going to be able to tell the difference in a mix. If it's the only thing you're listening to on a track, though, sticking a mic in front of your amp is where it's at.

    I think that if you really check carefully, that is a solid PRESSED top (not carved). It's the same as a vintage Slingerland Songster, among others. One of the best sounding archtops I've ever owned!!

    • @jakewildwood
      @jakewildwood Před 6 dny

      Nope, this one is a carved-top. You can see how it's made from the f-holes with a mirror. The pressed-tops look different inside and sound quite different. I've worked on at least a dozen carved-top Harmony products and I'm closing-in on 150+ or so pressed-top ones. Songsters are good guitars but quite different.

    That guitar looks so comfortable! and so different as well. What is it? My own first guitar amp was a repurposed 1971 RCA tube stereo gramaphone and some larger 12" speakers, my input jack was soldered to the record player's cartridge input, its signal broke up very easily and gave an awesome overdrive sound, the clean sound was not as good though.

      Don't have the bass, but my buddy Rick does -- is your output too weak with the new pickup? Something higher output would probably help -- SD Quarter Pounders are always a nice option but you may have to shoehorn them in.
