What is FundTheNINE? | FundTheNINE Explained Part Two
Link: www.sustainablemobility-ni.uk/
Today's video is Part Two of a Two-Part video detailing everything about the past and present of FundTheNINE.
FundTheNINE is a railway expansion campaign based in Northern Ireland, and takes heavy inspiration from the late transport researcher, Brian Guckian.
Brian Guckian was from Stilorgan, County Dublin and he had proposed the Northern Ireland Network Enhancement to the Northern Ireland Executive in the late 2000s.
Like many of us, Brian had serious questions about the Northern Irish railway network.
Why did Northern Ireland lose its railways?
Why did Northern Ireland end its rail freight movements?
Will Northern Ireland ever expand its railways?
And how long will it take before the Northern Ireland Executive finally commits to a transport strategy that prioritises rail construction?

    Trams

  • @billtuckwell1399
    @billtuckwell1399 Před 2 měsíci

    Light rail would offer Belfast a new different way of travel. If designed correctly in the narrow streets that Belfast has, Metre gauge electric traction would offer this. Metre gauge also offers various types of tram as seen in city's like in Poland and Germany. Trams can offer a excellent passenger transportation in pedestrian precints taking passengers direct to the shops where they wish to go. Do not make the mistakes, that have been made elsewhere, where trams were not taken into these important pedestrian areas. This has caused many schemes to be stopped, and is really the best way forward. Remember traffic conditions have been correctly solved elsewhere, look again in Poland and Germany. I have advised elsewhere with my knowledge of the problems seen and can be easily achieved. A real map of the proposals would have been helpful. You mention using trams on bridges, please be aware that the bridge must be strong enough to carry the weight of light tram. Some proposals in city's have now allowed for this problem. I look forward to following the development you are proposing.

    Imagine if NI had a NI Bus pass for £500 per year and, a Rail & Buss pass for £1000 per year along with Buses working along with the Trains by Buses waiting for the Trains to arrive before the Bus goes moreover, it works well in the Netherlands . When i look at how little Freight is carried on the NI and Eire Railways is a shame as there is real potential for reinstating at least 40% of the Rail Ireland once had and this will help reduce the number of Car journey’s . I go running near catalyst/amazon to heron road. It’s a train to nowhere. Nobody lives there and the offices aren’t busy enough to justify a tram. The other problem with trams is that they can’t be re-routed. Northern Ireland is so unstable that buses regularly need to be diverted. How do you do that with a tram?

    • @fundthenine
      @fundthenine Před 3 měsíci

      Buses need to be rerouted due to collisions and road works, tramways don't have those issues as cars don't run on them ( or at least, they shouldn't). Citing 'demand' at a single halt as a reason why it shouldn't be considered is also a major misconception, but since we're talking demand, a direct connection between Grand Central Station and one of Northern Ireland's biggest tourist attractions is more than enough of this so-called 'demand' that everybody thinks is so important. In reality, induced-demand would be the byproduct of such a service, and would likely lead to the rapid justification of its existence.

  • @seanfish17

    I don’t understand why you want to keep the “loop-like” route near city centre. G2 runs in the current loop configuration only because it’s a bus and because of the one way system near Donegall Square. If the whole square is being pedestrianised the light rail can just run two-way on the north side of the square. The same applies to the river crossing, the light rail can just run two-way along QE Bridge and then along the bank.

    • @fundthenine
      @fundthenine Před 3 měsíci

      SImply-put, keeping the 'loop' would help drive home the pedestrianisation of the area whilst reducing the need for a reversal of service and allowing for and easily expanded network towards Queen's University.

I inspect bridges for a living, I can assure you that 90% of railway infrastructure is still in place in these rural areas. However the longer its left, the more hassle it will be to reinstate the old lines. It's crazy that this isn't a priority in these areas. railways in ireland were some of the worst hit in europe when the motorways came along, but northern ireland got hit most, looking at old maps it probably had the densest rail network on the whole island but got horrifically stripped down far more so than even the republic's railways did. (and they're not in great shape either, but at least there isnt just a single track of line connecting two cities together) sadly the republic's government like the u.k's seems incapable of building any meaningful infrastructure outside of the capital but hopefully northern island being a bit more removed from london's reign can hopefully make a more independent push (and what's great unlike england the corridor's still exist with the imprint of where the railway used to be still very visible)

      i really hope you manage to make even more progress, feel the south really struggles the same way many countries do having their political and financial capital overlapping in the same city, if change is going to happen it'll need to start with taking power away from dublin and giving it to the rest of the country, hopefully northern ireland doesn't need such drastic measures as the goal is honestly so much more achievable than most giant infrastructure projects, managing to double track between belfast and derry will do wonders for the locals and bringing people together :)

    • @brimbles4999

      it just feels so silly the fact instead of building new rail infrastructure we're just trying to reinstall foolishly torn out track because of how badly car infrastructure backfired, ireland as a whole sure is a small island and all but the distances between these towns does mean quite long drives honestly, which is so exhausting they aren't just a short 15 maybe 25 minute drive as you'd hope they can be quite the trek

    The first focus should be on dualling all mainlines, resignalling, electrification, linespeeds ideally 75 (120) to 100 (160) mph (km/h). Then reopening old mainlines to these standards, with sidings for passing local/freight trains as a bonus, which would allow for fast non-stopping services. I wonder if it could make sense to build any new lines to standard gauge, so that Ireland could have an easy link to Stranraer (Scotland) one day, working like the eurotunnel, except better, because if Ireland has standard gauge too, you could have both fast and local-stopping trains from Dublin/Derry/etc. to Glasgow. High speed rail Dublin to Belfast? Then finally, HS3 from Stranraer to Carlisle.

    • @fundthenine
      @fundthenine Před 4 měsíci

      Firstly, the Island of Ireland switching to standard gauge would be both uneconomical and impractical. In the event that any rail tunnel is built between the Emerald Isle and GB then it would likely just be a tunnel that caters to say Irish Gauge rail only, with a line that stretches to a terminus in Scotland where passengers would change to a standard gauge train. Secondly, Dualling of the mainline network id an absolute necessity of we are to expand our railway network AND provide more services on existing routes. Increasing line speeds is also greatly needed to keep journey times as low as possible. And well let's hope HS2 actually gets completed before HS3 starts 🤣

    As someone from the mainland UK (Northern England) I hope this project goes through and best of luck with it. • @fundthenine
      @fundthenine Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you, as do I. On a serious note, you don't know how lucky you have it in the mainland. Our railway network is only just reaching modern standards in the last 10-15 years. One branch line still remains in operation using semaphore signalling! The one benefit we have is that the Northern Irish publics tends to be more aware of the importance of rail and thus is more pro-rail than the rest of the UK & ROI. Our biggest issue is the Department for Infrastructure, they regulate and fund all public transport, and they have commonly operated on a 'predict and build' system where they assume that car ownership will grow infinitely and thus must always get a majority heap of the transport budget. Thankfully though, things are seemingly headed in the right direction for a change, but still, cautious steps!

    Translink are a disgrace, and the bus service is a joke. In the evening time the busses are frequently cancelled (without any notification). 😒

      Buses being cancelled are a result of congestion and not Translink's fault. The solution to poor public transport is more investment and less car usage.

      @@fundthenine that's total nonsense, there's no congestion at 7.30 in the evening.

    A monument to thoughtless planning. The misnamed 'Central Station' is in the middle of an obscure district of Belfast well away from the City's central shopping and restaurant area.
