    • @peteralachi3888
      @peteralachi3888 Před 8 dny

      Betaine doesn’t really do “sizing” as we think of sizing. The paper just looks stronger and livelier after its application and it takes a while to dry then cure - at least a week, imo. I don’t know the exact mechanism behind it and I only used it for the inside wraps of this book and then Bronze Age Archie and ASM #122. The latter felt tighter than the Captain Midnight interior. So that feel is book-dependent. Although page quality appears better. Having said this, I’d be careful using Betaine because of its hygroscopic nature that can invite fungal growth on humid days (perhaps) - something left unmentioned in that paper. So Betaine isn’t comparable MC, which I use as glue, especially in conjunction tengu tissue repairs. And when used in excess, it has darkening effect on paper as you and Larry noted before. So I really cut back on its use these last few weeks. But I can do a little experiment on wraps on a Golden age for comparison and post here in the future. Will let you know, Dr Paul. Thank you for visiting and stay tuned!

    Professor, thanks for sharing your method on the resizing, very nicely done. Thank you for the detail on the addition of sodium proprionate as an anti-fungal as well--a very important detail for proper conservation and long-term preservation of these treasures! In terms of your color loss, unfortunate. I agree the water bath was extended too long. Do you think the addition of the Triton X 100 made the inks less tolerant of an extended water bath or the calcium hydroxide? I am interested in your thoughts on what contributed to the ink loss.

    • @peteralachi3888
      @peteralachi3888 Před 6 dny

      Yes, water-soluble surfactants can wash out paints, so could’ve been the triton X. I don’t usually use them on my books but I thought triton X would help with the tide lines. And then I got over-zealous when the tide lines stayed and the bath went over by 3 min. Wasn’t a good thing for the book as you can see.

    Peter, very nice result, looking forward to the rest of the series. No weight on the page during the de-rusting, correct? One of the little details i enjoyed was that this particular issue All American Comics has the All American Comics "AA" logo. This logo was only used for two months across the All American line while Max Gaines was beefing with the folks at DC before they bought him out. Fascinating piece of history you are conserving! I hope you give us a cover reveal in this series.

    • @peteralachi3888

      That’s amazing information Dr Paul. I had no idea! The cover is in such a bad shape. It’s missing major pieces and chunks and I’m thinking the best approach to it is to stabilize it without leaf casting - just reattach the major pieces with Japan tissue it got quite a beating in whatever flood water it was in. I will be looking for a cover only copy of this book if it ever comes along on eBay. See you soon!

      Hi Jerry, you’re welcome, my friend. Yes, I’ve worked with cotton linters and Abaca paper in the past and they were such difficult fibers to break down and use in pulping and leaf casting - so I stick with art paper and newsprint and tan and filter my pulp for better aesthetics and consistency. What tool are you using to apply the pulp? Even though I am soaking the shredded paper for a couple of days, using a blender (for a long time) and straining through a salad strainer and then a spaghetti strainer - the pulp will not dispense from a condiment bottle or a syringe adequately. I have used newspaper and comic book paper all without success. The castings I have done I have used a mini-spatula, but my pulp is just too uneven.

    • @peteralachi3888
      @peteralachi3888 Před 19 dny

      Dear Don, I make my pulp very smooth. Soaking the paper for a few days is helpful. I also strain it. I use a Micropipette (1000p). Make sure you have far more water than pulp and that would help. You can get the micropipettes on eBay, alongside their specific tips. The tips’ openings are rather narrow so I end up cutting them to widen. It is relatively more controlled way of adding the pulp. But make sure you don’t bid on the wrong size. They go for about $50 or less.

      Thank you, Jerry. I appreciate you stopping by, for some reason I uploaded the video twice to iMovie and it repeats itself. I’m new to all of this but getting better. Thank you for the encouragement! Fawcett is indeed great to work on for conservation, their covers are nice and sturdy, and the colors are great, although the interior colors, especially the green washes out too fast in warm CaOH2 water baths so I tend to limit them. Thanks again Jerry for stopping by and happy 4th!

    That came out beautiful Peter! Nice work!

    Peter it looks awesome my friend. Solid book now that you dedicated your precious time and knowledge to this wonderful comic! A little color loss in my opinion is a trade off to preserve the future of comics for the next generation!!!!!!!!!

      Thank you, Jerry! I agree, it was ok after all. It is indeed a trade off. And I think the Gelatin sizing helped bring the luster back in this book. It feels a lot better if you know what I mean! Thanks always for your guidance and support, Jerry!

    Thanks for sharing this info - I was researching this and appreciate seeing your process. Have you had any issues when sent for grading? This is reversible, correct?

      My pleasure, Don. Yes, the gelatin is reversible in a warm water bath. It’ll melt off the surface side and the book becomes unsized again. The method I use now uses a wider and softer brush. I need to show this one day, it’s really superb and it is conservation. I don’t have anything sent to CGC yet but soon. Will let you know.

    The color loss is unfortunate Peter. I’ve been drifting away from soaking in calcium hydroxide as a step in every project. I believe the spray method I used in the X-Men helps prevent the risk of color loss.

      Hi Jerry, yes, I agree with you 100%. I let the tidelines get to me and I wanted them gone so lesson learned not to overdo it with the CaOH2 baths. Thank you Jerry for your support, I really appreciate you and couldn’t do any of this without your help and your excellent Conservation channel!

  • @jerrythejitterbugcomicbook4098

    Bravo Peter. Really looking forward to the results. The pulp color looks spot on!

      Thank you Jerry! It was a good match, yes. And then quite smooth as I like it. I tend to use a high water-pulp ratio and the sponges really help with the work when a suction table isn’t available.

  • @jerrythejitterbugcomicbook4098

    Awesome Peter. I really enjoy the shorter episodes. I may have to cut mine down in time in the future. Looking forward to the next installment.
