Aldigham Moated Manor | Heritage from the Air | Series 1

Aldingham Moated Manor is closely linked to the motte, which we showcased in the previous episode. The Le Flemings, who built the motte and bailey castle at Aldingham, needed to move out of their motte due to coastal erosion, so they built a new moated manor a short distance inland from the castle. The manor today consists of a raised earthwork with a surrounding moat - clearly seen in this aer...

    Can you also view Coniston Hall and Millom Castle from the air? Coniston was owned by Hugh Fleming's father. Hugh married Joan Huddleston from Millom Castle. She was daughter of Richard Huddleston and Margaret Neville, illegitimate daughter of Richard Neville Earl of Warwick. Margaret Huddleston (Neville) carried the train of Anne Neville at the joint coronation of Richard lll and Ann. The Huddlestons were participants in an exciting and turbulent period of history and the Furness region hosted several notable people of this period.

      Thanks for the suggestions Barbara. I'll keep them in mind when I shoot coming videos. It can be tricky though to get permission to film with a drone over certain heritage sites, especially if they are occupied, like Millom Castle. I have filmed at Millom Castle in the past though and would love to go back to film some more :)

    What are the paths between the heather? Could these be ancient routes to the stones?

    • @furnesshiddenheritage
      @furnesshiddenheritage Před 5 lety

      Hi Barbara, most of the paths amongst the bracken are modern footpaths that people use to reach the circle. However there is a ditch that runs beside the circle (left of the circle in the first shot of the video) that may well be an ancient processional way - there is no concrete evidence to confirm this though (sadly).
