Episode 14 - If you have a 25ft Seagoing Yacht, maybe get a proper radio?
I little rant about how some people really need to think about safety. If you need help at sea, you at least should try! Hand-held radios at a distance with failing batteries really don't cut the mustard do they!

Episode 13 - how good are multi-band mobile antennas on an analyser
zhlédnutí 33Před 10 měsíci
Some random antennas, including two multi-band ones on an analyser, so you can see how the tuning works and what changes when you tweak - a multi band HF - the Abbree HF-3 and the 29/50/144/430 Oppxun HH9000 - which I didn't even know covered the 29MHz band. I thought I'd just connect them and see what the analyser said.
Episode 4 - Why doesn't my radio work - Simplex vs Semi-Duplex
zhlédnutí 90Před 10 měsíci
Your radio has loads of channels, but have you ever noticed that some don't appear to let you talk to other marine users? This video explains why - and why simplex and semi-duplex differences are important
Episode 6 - CTCSS and how it works
zhlédnutí 351Před 11 měsíci
A simple and easy to understand walk-through of the Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System CTCSS, with an example of what a tone actually sounds like, if you could hear it!
Episode 7 - Communication Problems
zhlédnutí 44Před 11 měsíci
What happens when your Press to Talk (PTT) button gets stuck and you have a roger beep feature turned on! Sticky buttons are bad enough - but today's antics going through the lock were just weird! As ever our lock-keepers did a great job dealing with it.
Episode 12 - 70MHz - The Forgotten Amateur Band
zhlédnutí 43Před 11 měsíci
If you want to work on 70Mhz Low Band - what equipment choices do you have - the Retevis RT-9000 (and the TYT TH-9000) for mobile use and the small TG-92 for portable operation seem to be really useful. Episode 9 - Marine Band VHF Radios - Tips for being more professional
zhlédnutí 353Před rokem
Lots of leisure boaters really struggle with using VHF radio appropriately - many have taken the test and don't quite understand the things they learned. This episode covers things like why we say things three times, and when we don't, plus how to give useful signal reports, and use the correct vocabulary so the professional mariners don't smirk!
Episode 10 - Are aftermarket Antennas for portable radios any good?
zhlédnutí 11Před rokem
Lots of people want to replace the antennas on their radios with 'better' ones. In this episode we test some of the common ones and compare them. Clearly, some are OK while others are actually pretty dire.

So you would match ctcss tx and rx on both radios? Then the other convos are silenced? Correct? You would make sure that both radios are on same channel when doing so? Ty

Hi, I like your videos. Re 70Mhz, the south coast and here on the Isle of Wight, the 4M band is getting quite active now more manufacturers are including it. The "friendly" band. We promote it for new operators as a good way to gain confidence. Regards, Mike M∅IES
