    This is very interesting. I’ve done this with old fall jackets also. This year I made dog coats using a pattern and made the outer layer a plastic shower curtain, and an old quilt in the middle layer, and a layer of thin fleece on the inside. They are flat and can be fastened around the chest. And they need a tie under the belly. I think I overdid it. It reminds me of a puffy snow suit for the baby goats. 😆😆😆. It’s a mild night. They are in a snug stall with their mummy. They will be alright. Thanks for the fun video.

    • @pattysherwood7091
      @pattysherwood7091 Před rokem

      @@hubcityhomestead I cut down the size of the jacket, took out a layer of batting, ( I had two quilt layers and took out one!🤣), added an elastic band under the belly. Now they fit the goats. One got his front legs tangled in his so I fixed it. I was going to take them off but when I put my hand under the jacket, I felt how perfectly warm they were! It is snowy and cold out so I kept them on and I’ll just keep an eye on them. Hope you are having fun with your goats.

    Sounds like a good culling is in order, get you some actual layers for your climate, preserve eggs during the warm months, and use them during winter. Thats what momma done growing up. Dont be throwing your money away on cat food. Can't always believe the YT fairytale others be preaching!

    • @hubcityhomestead
      @hubcityhomestead Před rokem

      I think you may be right. I got all starry eyed about all the different kind of chickens. The light sussex was suppose to be my year round layer but I discovered that many of the American light sussex have been bred for show and have lost their really good laying ability and that was disappointing because I really do love them. Thank you for your comments. I really have appreciated them.

  • @tylerrencher5559
    @tylerrencher5559 Před rokem

    What is your target protein content for your chickens? The cat food is 30% right? But are you feeding that in addition to their normal feed? If you were feeding 2:1 with a 17% protein base feed you're only getting up to 21% protein. If you feed 1:1 you're at 23.5% protein.

    • @hubcityhomestead
      @hubcityhomestead Před rokem

      It may not be making much of a difference. I had a really comment that recommended culling and getting better egg layers. I agree. I just love all of the colors. Math is not my strong point but I think I got what you were saying. Thank you.

      I will do that. My daughter has been inconsistent in feeding them the cat food so I will do a video where I am the one feeding them the cat food daily and a second video with the results. Thank you for interest and I will make sure we get you an update.

    • @hubcityhomestead
      @hubcityhomestead Před rokem

      Yes. We will milk every one. We have some purebred goats and they don't produce that much milk but I have some mixed breeds that are amazing when it comes to milk. Thanks for watching.

  • @Thomas-sk3tq
    @Thomas-sk3tq Před rokem

    Why y'all feeding them layers cat food and their own eggs?

    • @hubcityhomestead
      @hubcityhomestead Před rokem

      That is a great question. If I have eggs cracked and I am not going to use them soon I will throw them on the ground to break them up and it allows the chickens to have the protein from the egg. It is important to break them so the chickens don't start cracking open their own eggs. The cat food was a suggestion from another homesteader who doesn't like to use additional light in the winter to have her chickens lay. If the chickens are getting enough protein they will lay a bit more in the winter than they normally would. I don't expect them to lay a lot but if I can get a dozen a week from my 25 chickens, through the winter, then my family will have the eggs we need. Thank you for watching. I really do appreciate the question.

    I love your video. Sadly the Info about the cochins as the relatives to the bigger ones is wrong. As the bantams are not related to the Standard ones at all. The Standards are just human bred to just look like the original bantams. The bantams are the true form and way older.
