Kristen Nicholson: The Science of Athletes in Motion
In today's episode, host Chris Gorski speaks with Kristen Nicholson, the director of the Pitching Lab at Wake Forest University. Nicholson talks about how an interest in math and the way the body moves eventually led to studying children with shoulder injuries, accomplished figure skaters and eventually baseball players. Nicholson also explains why it's so difficult to study the motion of the shoulder, and how her work in the lab may be able to help pitchers stay healthier.

The deal is this. ANY natural treatment WILL NOT work if you're on any type of synthetic pharma drugs, plain and simple. Anyone who said otherwise is either ignorant or outright lying to you. Pharma drugs cause all kinds of side effects including cataracts. That's why a lot of natural treatment don't seem to work. Stop the meds first then start the natural treatment

I dont think autistic people read enough about the broad range of commorbities other autistic people deal with. Severe GI distress, seizures, apraxia, sleep disorders, severe anxiety, sensory overload to the point of having panic attacks (what a NeuroTy calls a meltdown) selective mutism, severe issues with proprioceptive awareness to the point that one has tremors as they attempt gross and fine motor movements. You cant change the genetics once they exist but you can potentially help the brain with proteins that it needs to have present or have removed. Mice are used because they can create similar social symptoms in mice with certain genetic changes. They can study how that brain develops from infancy. People dont get that the most significant changes that happen in the brain related to autism happen between 6-24 months. Babies dont come out learning to speak at one month old. All children have brain growth during the first 5 years of life but autistic people undergo a specific pattern of growth. The reaearch shows that the larger the brain growth of the amigdela the more severe the intellectual deficits are so if we can mitigate these issues it would be better for everyone.

Diabetic here for over 25 years. As a result, my primary care giver Dr. sent me to the Ophthalmologist every 6 months. Initially had bleeding in one eye and the beginning of a cataract. I asked my Dr if there was anything that I could do to slow the cataract down such as nutrition? He laughed at me and said no, there’s nothing that you can do to slow it down. Fast forward 17 years to today, I’ve lost 60 lbs, cleaned up my diet, take my vitamins and minerals, do not take any medications, and have been going to the same doctor / Optometrist. After about 3-4 years the bleeding stopped, my eye sight has gotten much better 20/30 vision, don’t need glasses, and my doctor asked me to write a book on my progress. I let him know that the human body has an innate ability to heal itself when given the correct nutrients. The Dr is now on high blood pressure meds and I see his health slowly fading. There’s a reason that the medical schools spend one hour on nutrition for a Dr. schooling, keep them uninformed. Sick patients keep the doctors office busy. No money to be made with a healthy population. Sad truth. Be your own champion and educate yourself. Very few outside of your family is truly your friend. To your health my friends. 🙏

I have been using N-Acetyl-L-Carnosine eye drops for 25 years. Two decades ago, my doctor said I have "junior" cataract and these eye drops wont work. He had me set up for operation in another 5 years. But my cataract absolutely stop progressing since 2003. It worked fine. It causes a mild sting indicative of penetration into the cornea. Both my brothers who are not into integrative medicine had cataract surgery about age 75. So as Dr PatrickO says, eye drops will never see the light of day. You don't mess with a billion dollar enterprise. BTW, these drops are made by Life Extension, a comprehensive supplement company with monthly publications of articles on supplements. A final word: Our regulatory agencies, especially the FDA, have long been captive of Big Pharma. Half their incomes comes directly from BP, supposedly to support fast-track approval of drugs. How can things go wrong when the cops are paid by potential criminals'?

Growth Hormone is difficult to detect. Men are supposed to have natural Testosterone, and the range varies among different individuals. There are both oral and injectable drugs that cause the Testes to manufacture more of the Hormone. Eastern Bloc female Olympians had Dramatic Improvements in their performances, from around 1956. There is known to have been massive doping in those countries. A Female European speed skater, from that Era, complained that: "Drugs are ruining Sport!" Much is said about the Male vs. Female performance difference. A Lot (but-not All) of that difference is due to Men having Natural Testosterone. Permitting Transexual females to compete with women may be unfair (even three years after they have transitioned.) Little is said, however, about the (Rarer) Trans Men. They readily admit to taking Testosterone, and have been known to beat Cis Men at certain sports...at least at the High School level. That Gay Female WNBA star who was imprisoned in Russia?? She's 6'8" Tall! That is almost Unheard of in a woman!! Why do both boys and girls stop growing?? Well...Girls produce Estrogen directly, and Boys, indirectly-in the latter case by metabolism of Testosterone. That's why many Teen boys have Breast development. Well...Aromatase Inhibitors-used to treat Breast Cancer-Block the Estrogen-producing hormone. Theoretically-they can add four inches to your height. Female athletes are Chromosome-tested. It may seem Ridiculous to also test Men-given their "Inherent" advantage. BUT...there are also Klinefelter Men. Because they are born with small testes, due to a chromosomal abnormality, they are naturally Ectomorphs (skinny-with poor muscle development) and preternaturally Tall. I would BET, However, that the NBA and NFL has Many such individuals in their ranks. "How is that Possible??" you may ask. The Klinefelter men must be using Exogenous steroids. They may legit be in the "Normal" range of Testosterone...but THEY shouldn't have ANY in their systems! Early Baseball players used Amphetamine...that drug works by recruiting more muscle fibers, and increasing your metabolism. It causes a short-term spike in performance, instead of muscle growth. EPO?? Dangerous and an Unfair advantage. Athletes CAN, and DO-train at Altitude, which "Naturally" increased their levels. You could do wind sprints in Denver for a month, work your way up to Cuzco, Peru for a second month, and train in La Paz for the third month.

I think what a lot of people don't understand is that depression isn't just a mindset, it's a condition, it's not just mental, but physical. It's just that many people are uneducated on how it actually works, which is, on itself, fine, but it's also why parenting advice is so bad. The problem it leads to is that many people who are depressed are basically told to just "get over it" because of the misconception that it's just a mindset.

Look, as a dispensary associate while we love helping patients we don’t love being the ones to have to give them medical advice. It’s actually expressly against our job description to give any medical advice or prescription advice. The problem is that in states where you can just go to a marijuana doctor get your card and leave they don’t give you any time to ask and answer questions. They don’t give you the necessary information that you’re not going to know to ask for either (including your literal prescription allotments, when your card expires, when your prescription expires etc) and unfortunately, these are still things that the patient needs to know! We are forced to fill in the blanks as dispensary associates and trust us, we don’t want to do that, because it’s a lot of responsibility and we’re not medically trained. If we’re wrong, we could hurt somebody. It is the burden of the doctors to pick up patient education so that we don’t have to.
