Apparently this bird has the twitchers in Sunderland and Whitburn UK's knickers in a knot! I've been hearing it for weeks, what a lovely little song bird. A long way from home, someone must have had them in a collection and either let them out or they escaped!
Imagine if the owl forgets one day which direction she started spinning her head and it just keeps turning to find out which the original position was so she can take off flying
We moved from Toronto to a small rural village west of London and we hear these sounds all the time at night. Very spooky if you have no idea what is making the sounds. I knew it must be some kind of bird but had no earthly idea what bird. A neighbour was adamant it was raccoons . . . I told her to lay off the excessive pot smoking. Finally, now we know what is making these haunting but beautiful sounds. Thank you.
If it’s west of London in the UK, you’re looking at the wrong bird. Eastern Screech Owls are a North American bird. However, speaking from experience as an owl enthusiast, you may instead be hearing a Tawny owl, a relative of the Barred, Spotted, and Great Gray. I suggest looking into those!
I stand corrected, I just realized there IS a London in Canada very near your former home of Ontario, and definitely in Eastern North America. You were probably hearing this species after all if that’s the London you meant!
I've heard this sound over the years ! Wondered what it was ? I've heard other sounds also ! Two made the hair stand up on the back of my neck until I found out what was making it ! One was the gosh awful shirk two porcupines making love make as your walking though a dark hemlock forest at night ! The other is when again your walking though a dark forest at night ! It's Fisher also looking for love ! OMG !
