Thread-legged Bug in Mitchell Caverns (Emesinae)
zhlédnutí 76Před 3 měsíci
With its bizarre gait, spindly legs, and extra long antennae, the Thread-legged Bug (Emesinae) might be mistaken for an alien. But it is indeed from Earth - and also below it. There is a very small ecosystem in Mitchell Caverns that we know very little about.
Long-nosed Snake (Rhinocheilus lecontei)
zhlédnutí 173Před 3 měsíci
These beautiful snakes are non-venomous and commonly seen at night in the Mojave Desert. They hunt a variety of prey, but are particularly known for consuming eggs. Long-nosed snakes also have an interesting (and off-putting) defense against predators.
Bighorn sheep on the Cave Trail
zhlédnutí 249Před 3 měsíci
On May 17th 2024, a tour headed to Mitchell Caverns got to see six bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni). Although they do live on the slopes of the Providence Mountains, seeing them is a rare occurrence. Seeing six of them, rarer still.
Weird Dust Bug - what is it?
zhlédnutí 141Před 4 měsíci
A bizarre insect, apparently covered in dust and detritus, was filmed in Mitchell Caverns. Watch this video and join us in trying to figure out what it is. A little known and very unusual world exists below the limestone of the Providence Mountains.
Barklouse (Family: Psocidae) In Mitchell Caverns
zhlédnutí 106Před 4 měsíci
These are not the lice that trouble humans. Small, transparent, and unusual, the barklouse is a denizen of Mitchell Caverns. A tiny, unusual, and mostly mysterious ecosystem exists in the subterranean world of this state park.
Mountain Lion (Puma concolor) - Part V
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 5 měsíci
It has been over a year since our last installment, but the big cats have not been idle. Every few months, mountain lions have continued to appear on our park trail cameras. Recently a big male has been making a "scrape" to advertise his territory and readiness to breed.
Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii)
zhlédnutí 110Před 5 měsíci
On this holiday of renewal, let us take a moment to consider the animal most associated with Easter: rabbits, specifically the Desert Cottontail. Often overlooked despite being commonly encountered, these rabbits are not only cute, but able to survive against all odds (and an extensive list of predators) in the expanses of arid North America. With some tricks and their natural fecundity, these ...
American Badger Sniffing Around
zhlédnutí 245Před 6 měsíci
A local American Badger (Taxidea taxus) shows off its keen sense of smell. This is an essential sense here: the Providence Mountains are well-known for intense winds, as you can hear in this clip.
Daylight Bobcat (Lynx rufus) with vocalization
zhlédnutí 844Před 6 měsíci
A rare daytime bobcat (Lynx rufus) appearance, and an even rarer vocalization. Bobcats are usually silent, so this footage is a rare treat.
Bobcat (Lynx rufus) Yawning and Stretching

Sleepy kitty! One of our stealthy and reclusive bobcats (Lynx rufus) enjoys a lazy vigil at one of the park's water sources.
Two Coyotes Playing
zhlédnutí 2,1KPřed 7 měsíci
A pair of our resident "song dogs" have some fun. Coyotes (Canis latrans) are close relatives to dogs and they play just like our domestic pups.
Panamint Chipmunk: A Sky Island Species
zhlédnutí 106Před 7 měsíci
One of our seldom seen mammals is also among the most interesting. Panamint Chipmunks (Tamias panamintinus) dwell among the rocks and pinyon pines of our higher slopes. They have been isolated on these and other desert mountains since the Ice Age ended and the surrounding desert became inhospitable.
Bobcat Kittens in the Caverns
zhlédnutí 281Před 7 měsíci
What do you do when bobcat kittens appear in your cave? Why make a "cat vid" of course. For about a week last summer, a family of bobcats (Lynx rufus) made Mitchell Caverns their home. The trail camera footage will melt even the hardest heart.
