The frame gives the video a set depth so when an object surpasses that depth it creates the illusion of 3d nice

movie producers are so dumb why don't they just do this? Jokes aside, you could probably make this work in a full movie if you were clever about it. Maybe by making the black columns into actual pillars. Heck, you could get a similar effect just by using the bottom and top rows, like that one gif of the CGI guy "crawling out" of the screen that was posted a lot a few years ago.
