Underwater Drone Footage Tunk Lake
@MFEGoingDeep first time visiting Tunk Lake and what a gorgeous body of water this is. Being the third deepest lake in Maine and also very clear water it had been on my list to visit for some time. The video starts dropping down to the deepest area I could find on the lake which corresponds with the state survey at 222’. There wasn’t much for life down here that I could find, usually I can find a sculpin or 2 but wasn’t able to here. I explored several different areas at several different depths. The next area in shallower water had a bunch of big boulders to pilot through which was fun. Then ended up in a shallow water area that I thought looked good, as I started looking around I spotted a bottle so I retrieved the drone, attached the robotic arm and recovered a few of those as well as some sunglasses.
The lake is known for some large lake trout, anything I was marking on the fishfinder seemed to be a lot higher off the bottom in the water column than I would’ve anticipated. Besides a few small minnows, unsure of the species, I didn’t see much of anything for fish. That happens sometimes and is all part of exploring new spots and finding them! But regardless the day’s main mission was to round out the top 3 of the deepest lakes in Maine by obtaining some footage here which was accomplished.
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet I would greatly appreciate your support and as always thanks for watching! 👍🐟

Underwater Drone Footage to the Bottom of Sebago Lake

@MFEGoingDeep today marks 1 year since the start of this channel and I’m proud to have this be the video to celebrate that occasion. So some things to note here; the deepest spot when this lake was surveyed was 316’. The area of 300’ water is quite large (1 1/2 x 1/2 mile approx.) so once I had a consistent reading on my depth finder over 300’ of depth I decided to make the dive. As you see in ...

@MFEGoingDeep my first trip to Sebago Lake was certainly a day I’ll remember! My main goal for coming here was to have a look in the deepest water area of the lake which happens to be the deepest in the state, which you will see in the next video. Part 2 of this trip was to have a chance to look where I thought there might be some old bottles or other artifacts to recover. While researching I s...

      I’m sure the lake is perfectly fine, just a matter of figuring out where they are and their habits this time of year. They seemed to be spread out all over the water column and when that happens it’s harder for me to locate them just roaming around in the dark. It gets disorienting. I was hoping to find a place with my fishfinder that showed them stacked up on bottom somewhere but didn’t locate one on this trip.

      @@MFEGoingDeep I'm not sure if it's a protected area or not, I recall when I used to live there that it's considered a protected war grave as the pilots were British and they prefer to leave the remains where they are instead of bringing them home like we tend to do in the US. I'm sure there are lots of boats and things down there to look at, I was surprised to see how sandy the bottom is, I assumed it would have rocks like everywhere else in Maine.

      The shortest answer I can come up with sounds like mostly glacial movements and natural rock erosions over time carving out the deepest areas as the lake was forming which were then filled with melt and runoff however many years ago. There’s actually a few lengthy explanations I found for it with a quick search online, it’s pretty interesting!

    • @MFEGoingDeep
      @MFEGoingDeep Před 5 dny

      I think what happens is when it’s straight up and down in deep water and the drone is parallel with the bottom the tether has some stretch and spring to it and doesn’t spool as freely with a more abrupt angle over the side of the boat and down. Any movement in the boat up and down or movements when piloting the drone that aren’t strong enough to pull more tether off the reel it causes some up and down movement sometimes as it’s attached to the tail end. Usually once I have more of an angle in the line after moving around some I don’t notice it as much.

    Back in the 70s, I took canoe trip with my dad, brother and family friends down a portion of the Kennebec. A beautiful river, but the first day was steady cold rain, and the second day the deerflies came out. My little brother was so tired, He fell asleep in about an inch of water in the bottom of the canoe (of course we made sure his head was well out of the water). We paddled so hard. We went about 15 miles the first day which was about 2/3 of the trip at least, and ended up staying in Ranger station, the guy was wonderful and we had steaks. Tough trip, but I'll never forget . Adversity and successfully navigating through it is a great character builder and I am grateful for the opportunity I had. It must've worked because I've been called " quite a character" a few times in my life. Some have told me that's not what that means but I prefer my version. peace.

Sometime before that a man went missing in that area as I was pulling that chain up thinking it might have been him we got about 6 ft of chain into the boat.
