I lived in the gatehouse in 1978-1979 with my family. My sister-in-law, S. Mahoney and her family lived in the Stonehouse(5:57), the small cottage shown in the video. We all toured the castle before it started to really deteriorate, and it was amazing. Some of the original furnishings were still there and even some cooking utensils were down in the "moat" hanging on the stone walls. My favorite room in the castle was the library with tall windows overlooking the valley. The back of the mansion overlooked the valley and there was a small waterfall and pond at the bottom of the cliff. An old road, long closed off, had an ornate iron gate barely visible from the road leading up the the property from the backside. We also visited the small cemetary on the property that was largely overgrown at the time, not too far from the small Stonehouse. My sister-in-law did see a woman's figure in one of the downstairs windows wearing a long, dark green dress, but supposed it was just a reflection of some sort that only lasted a few seconds. Our time there was short, and the Gatehouse was in need of desperate repair. We learned later that some monks from the monestary moved in and began repairs, but no further information was given to us. The caretakers, Bob and Olive Cristman, rented the place to all of us but said they were not responsible for any repairs and had no authority to do so. We were not told who owned the property at the time and it really didn't matter to us to persue it any further. The last I heard from the Cristmans was that a Russian musician purchased the entire property and "no trespassing" signs prevented us from visiting our old home again. As you may have noticed, my profile photo is a photo of the castle from an original postcard that my son now owns. My watercolor painting of the castle was given to the Herkimer County Historical Society by my daughter, B. Stewart, of Ilion, NY a few years ago. I honestly don't know if they still have it, but I hope they do. Thank you for this video. I greatly enjoyed watching it and hope the history of this once beautiful place is never forgotten.
