    Is the sensor in the broadcast the same as the pocket 6k? If so they should put the 6k full frame sensor in a ursa broadcast.

    Yea the URSA has always been "3 cameras in 1" in reality get a camera that is almost unusable in all the mentioned use cases. And let me tell you why as I been working in TV production for almost 20 years. 1) ENG Work - It does not shoot interlaced, does not support broadcast standard MPEG-2, this is by itself a deal breaker, if you shooting news there is no time to convert from BRAW or ProRes... no one cares about 4K or 6K... you deliver 1080i and that's it. If you don't most TVs won't work with you. The other huge issue is the power consumption... BMD claims upto 100W... compare it to Sony ENG flagship Z750 which sits at 41W. News workers usually keep their cameras running for a long time as they can't afford to loose the shot to a boot up, when the politician finally shows up. This means you need to carry twice as many batteries with URSA. 2) Live production - this camera is only usable in studio... it is ill suited for sports due its rolling shutter and for the typical stage scenes it's just does not have the image performance to provide a clean image under complex stage lightning. 3) Cinema camera - I can it can be used for this, but you probably have better options on the market. Such as FX-6 or FX-9. If you look for the most well rounded camera... it is Sony FX-9, it shoots interlaced, it supports RCP for live production, it has fast Super16 readout mode with minimal rolling shutter at 1080, it can be used with B4 lenses, and it runs at 35 W, meaning you can do 10hr shoot with 3 batteries no problem. Yes URSA is cheaper... but it also does not get the job done.

    • @jeffsaffron5647
      @jeffsaffron5647 Před 27 dny

      The reason BMD cameras are cheap because BMD cuts a lot of corners. Their power consumption is so high because their use off the shelf FPGAs instead of custom build single purpose electronics. It goes without saying that a development of such electronics is expensive. Another huge issue is their lack of after warranty service... when anything on your camera breaks they can't repair it, as they don't stock extra parts (which would cost them more money). This idea of BMD trying to make an affordable live production camera was always a bit funny to me... because the cameras are not what make live video production expensive... it is all the other crap you need... lenses, tripods, trucks, cables, switcher, recording units, RCPs, CCUs, monitoring... not to mentioned experienced crew... the total cost of a professional video production is eye watering and if you already spending hundreds of thousands of dollars you are not going to hamstring the whole investment with mediocre cameras.

    Is it likely that Black Magic Design will release a new generation of this camera now in 2024? After being through both screenwriting school, film school, acting school and a B.A. in journalism and reporting I think this camera might be a great choice for me to do both short reportage and documentaries around town as well as short films and acting monologues.. But I see it has been around for some time now. Shall one wait and expect to see an updated model of this camera or shall one go down in price and get the new box-shaped camera, the Micro Studio camera G2? I grow up as a reporter, and journalist student in Washington D.C. doing internships all over town, in the National Press Club, Capital Hill and so on.. So am used to the good feel of a camera over my shoulder and a great viewfinder... But I am open to re-think in 2024 what might be best. I see Panasonic has made some in comparison to this one smaller camcorder like the HC X20 for example... - are they worth it as they are at half the price of this one for the type of work I like to do? Anyone that tested a variety of cameras and has been around on different types of jobs who please can advise me on what to choose in 2024 and forward... I want a camera to get started on but think is good if I can also make money of it, meaning is professional to the level of the present requirements needed for today's market. thanks :)

      I think th BG2 isn't going to get an update that soon. it came out late in 2021. I don't think Blackmagic making an update to the camera outside of firmware updates which it has been getting a lot of is going to happen. A full frame Ursa might be more likely.

    There is a lot of talk about the camera's low price, which is true. However, once you throw in a decent lens for the camera, the price goes up to over 10 or 11 thousand dollars...which is still a great price for a camera that can do all of this.

    I would’ve preferred they charged a price closer to the Ursa G2 so they could’ve beefed up the internals enough to match the Ursa G2’s faster readout which is very close to global shutter. I think it would’ve been be a true successor to the Ursa G2 and a no brainer to pick up for a lot of people beyond broadcast shooters. Even at a price closer to the Ursa G2, it’s still an amazing value as a broadcast camera.

    Nice review. Another big 'con' to some of us is the lack of simultaneous recording to the internal cards (SD & CFast). Typically, when you see two card slots these days, you assume there is the option of recording a back-up copy, you know, just in case one card fails. Unfortunately, we assumed that and purchased this camera. Actually, we didn't even give it a second thought - that's just how cameras work these days. Right? Even our several years old $2000 Sony PXW-X70 does that, as well as our even older, similarly priced, JVC GY-HM850. Well we were wrong! Can't really blame BMD as they didn't advertise this feature, but we think it should be there. Just wanted to throw that out there so everyone is aware. Thanks again.

  • @AndrewZeletrainStudios

    I've read that some people have been able to remove or lessen the rolling shutter by using gyro stabilization in Resolve. If, that's the case, I'm getting the BG2 as an A cam to my pocket 4K. The 12K is great, but that dual native ISO is so hard to move away from when you need a camera for multi use without switching to something like the Sony FX9 which shoots in 6K, but no internal Raw and almost double the cost.

    • @flipnap2112
      @flipnap2112 Před rokem

      yes, the gyro stab will remove most of the rolling shutter. It works even better with faster shutter speeds. for action shots, I shoot with as fast a shutter speed I can manage. I then stabilize the footage with gyro. dont even have to go full 100 percent. if you want you can then pre render and stabilize the clip even more with another mode. To get your motion blur back (fast shutter speeds kill motion blur, which is what you WANT). To get your motion blur back, bring it into fusion and create two nodes. Optical flow.. and Vector motion blur. so four nodes. in > optical flow > vector motion blur > Out. you will get amazing realistic MB and have almost zero rolling shutter.

  • @DeanHarringtonimages

    The G2 camera has advantages that outweigh its rolling shutter issue... broardcast ENG requirements are classic on this camera and if ENG work is what you do, this is the camera to seriously consider.
