My dad was Army Air Force, Special Service, Photo Specialist. Pretty sure he did a lot of secret enemy positioning photography, during WWII. Became Captain. May have done some top secret work. Worst. Spotter. Ever. The DM/ Shooter DEPENDS on accurate ranging and spotting data to dial/ hold/ correct his dope or aim. No help here... "I didn't see it" or " it hit low left" don't really help. He's basically having to do his own spotting by getting back on target in time to see the splashes or dirt/ foliage displacement. Your Spotter is usually so close beside the shooter that they're touching, or, in competition/ range days, the spotter can set up so that he's directly behind the shooter, in the same line with the rifle to watch the bullet trace/ shockwave for impacts or flightpath. They're also juggling MILS and MOA here. That's bound to create problems. 1 and a half MILS @ 300m is 45 cm (~18 inches , 17.7 really. ) 1 and a half MILS @ 300 YARDS is 16.2 inches 1 and a half Minutes @ 300 Yards is 4.5 inches. The mental gymnastics that poor shooter is having to go through with these guys is painful to watch. Also, mixing hunting ammo and match ammo of different bullet weights and velocities, as well as quality, just compounds the difficulty what he's trying to show he can do. I know it was just an informal "Fun range day" ... but ...
