    I don't understand the 2 french drains leading to the dry well. The french drains you built are for sub-surface water and you never run roof water into one. Does this yard have a problem with a high water table? All you needed were 2 solid pipes to take the roof water directly to the well. The perforated pipe and stones were a lot of extra work that basically just minimally expands the capacity of the well. Also, unlike straight drainage, french drain pipes need to be barely pitched, the amount determined by the total length. The 1"/10' doesn't work with french drains because the water level wouldn't get to the height of the high end of the pipe.

    Hi great video, I have a question: if you can just run all the water into a storm drain, what is the purpose of the french drain vs catch basins and pipe ending at the storm drain?

    While all of that sounds just wonderful a thing to consider is some areas, such as where I live, do not allow you to drain your yard into the ditch or street and you have to deal with your yard drainage within your own property.

    What if there is no low point in the front? I've wanted to put a French drain in to clar pooling water at the rear of my house but don't have enough fall to clear water in the front. I could go all the way to the street but then going over the curb would put it higher than the grade...so going "uphill" to get to the street.

    Oh man, same thing for us, bought in winter, then the snow melted. Lowest house on block, 8 neighbours yards drain into ours plus the rain/snow of this yard. It’s a lake back there, and we have to walk our dog too because yard is flooded almost year round. Landscaper dug a trench to let water out because 4” of rain was coming next day and it would have come inside. That was 5 weeks ago…he hasn’t returned to finish project! Nightmare on James street!

    We see no water in yard! Something is working. Yard looks good. The drain inlets function as clean outs. All of the pipe is wrapped perforated hdpe, backfilled w sand, and also french drain section with rock. Do not assume "bad design", just because it was not done by you.

    There’s never a follow up video. Everyone does what they think is going to work until it doesn’t. I would surely love to see people show proof , valid follow up videos as actual proof. I know this bc I made a mistake as well and paid a guy to dig a 8x 8x 6ft deep hole and filled it up with 57” rock and guess what, the erosion of the surrounding sand is seeping in and everything is sinking in now.

    All that clean gravel for what no drainage fabric around the trench to keep soil out of the rock unless its clay soil then no worries but that dirt doesn’t look like clay to me poor customer a short life French drain that’s the reason why I did my 200 foot French drain in my backyard my self hired 2 helpers to do all the hard work well the trench did everything else my self there’s great drainage channels on CZcams just a little research 🔬 lol🤦🏽‍♂️💸💸💸🤣

    No doubt a french drain is the best solution, but, at what cost? Can you compare the cost of a dry well, or multiple dry wells to the french drain you proposed. I think the difference is about $800 for multiple dry wells and $4000 for the proposed french drain. Am I wrong? Multiple dry wells would improve the drainage response and would decrease the time that the water pooled, if any pooling occurred at all. A dry well is one version of vertical drainage and is always much, much less expensive than long, labor intensive french drains.

    • @hotmetalslugs
      @hotmetalslugs Před 5 měsíci

      From my experience, this yard needs more than the drywell, specifically because of all the grading issues and swales with nowhere to go. If there’s a good drop out to the curb, go with the French drain and surface water drains (two different pipes remember) where he indicates. Best not to feed downspouts into French drain pipes. Another popular drain site on YT has a few new videos on soakaways that can be helpful. The key is that you’d be looking to get the surface water below the hard clay (which gets harder over time the more it stays flooded) so it can percolate through. Not perfect. Better. Good luck!

    Good video. I would like to make a suggestion for poor drainage in lawns. I had 4000 sq feet of lawn with red clay soil. It would turn rock hard when the soil dried and hold water too long. It also separated from my foundation in the summer, so I water to keep it expanded near the soil. I started spraying liquid molasses to the lawn bi-weekly, I applied dry molasses too every three months, but quit after a year. It was too messy. I would put the molasses in a hose end sprayer and just walk the yard. It caused the earthworms to come to my land and increase the soil life, The earthworms are after the bacteria and fungi. They create tunnels in the soil as far as 2-3 ft and my grass roots follow the tunnels. The lawn made significant changes over 6-7 months. My lawn became fluffy and felt like a pillow when people walk on it. They would say, "your lawn is so soft." Also I took a shovel and was able to slide it easily into the soil to check what happen below. I found the red clay changed to a dark clay loam with the roots down to about 13 inches. This was a water save in the summer. A another thing I noticed that when it rain the water quit standing and the lawn would absorb most of the water, but could get rid of it thru evaporation in a timely manner, I stop having grass disease too. I did see red clay approx 18 inches down, not on the surface as in the past. I had a lot of fire ants and white grubs. The fire ants can's stand the heavy micro activity, so they leave. My white grub count became a rare thing to see. There probably some other things, but I can't thing of it. I can't think of a con. I used medina liquid molasses from my feed store, but you can get it lowes, home depot, nurseries. The soil around the house doesn't separate anymore, even if I don't water for a while. you will noticed the need to water decreases too. I don't know how this work if you have a rock hardpan, but it should still make some difference in the soil.

  • @LittleTut

    Hello. I had my home gutted/remolded 2016/2017 here in Washington, DC and had my basement turned into an apartment with separate entrance from the side walk. I am just now looking to rent out my unit and always wondered about the sump pump. The plug with the little light on it (red), but the test button is mushed in; take it one of the contractors pushed it in too hard. Anyway, I took the cover from over the sump pump and there was water down in the sump and debris. I manually lifted the piece that raises when sump is filled with water and the water gushed out on the outside under the porch. So, I know the pump is working, just the plug is bad I suppose. I used a nearby plug, I sucked all the water out of the sump which had watery gray like sludge, take it from the construction, filled it with water. But now the water isn't being discharged, I just hear the humming sound from the pump. Is it now clogged inside the pump? 🙄
