I worked for Inland steel and while in the 28 in. mill 12 years I cross those tracks twice a day . Man alive I was young back then.

Looking at an SD70 coming out from under a bridge, I remembered I was working on building a prototype for a work-stand to access the Dynamic Brake Grids, which for some STUPID reason, EMD put them on the very end of the Long Hood End, where the Radiators and Cooling Fans used to be on just about every other engine they made was. There wasn't ANY ROOM to stand or sit to disconnect and dismount the 6 pie shaped grids, & the Grid Cooling Fan, that the grids were mounted to the top of. I didn't get to finish it. I don't know if anyone finished building it or not. Someone is going to get bad hurt, working on grids on SD70's ! THANKS FOR YOUR CHANNEL.

Touring those cars during Railroad Days 2022 in Pullman was amazing.

A small point- this is not a transfer caboose, though it may have been used in such service. This is a standard road caboose, bay window design. Transfer cabooses (MILW actually called theirs terminal cabooses) were little more than a box mounted on an old flatcar or steam locomotive tender frame, something to keep the rear-end crew out of the elements, when hauling a cut of cars from a yard to another railroad’s yard in the same city to interchange. They’d have maybe a desk, a stove, and possibly a couple of chairs, but that would be about it. Still, a nice video showcasing a bygone era!
