Through the 80s and 90s it was an amazing era of SANFL football and on you tube there is so many AFL games and sadly not many SANFL games so i thought i would upload a few. It would be great if others could do the same and we could all share what games we have. If anyone has any games please upload them or contact me on pipvernon375@gmail.com and I'll help you out.

    I remember after this game there were reports in the media that Ports glory days were behind them, that after their run in the late 80s, their star was on the wane. Little did they know...... Port Adelaide would win 6 of the next 8 SANFL premierships until 1999, only missing out in 1993 (beaten Preliminary Finalist), and 1997 when they lost to Norwood in the Grand Final.

  • @Holden308
    @Holden308 Před 5 měsíci

    Westies were the best performed team through the 1991 Finals ... until the Grand Final where we probably won the fist fights, but we let that rule our game from the 2nd quarter and North Adelaide by playing some very good football in their own right made us pay big time. Pity. The way we played through the 2nd half of the year we were definitely a Premiership chance in 1991. We'd have to wait until 2015 to win a Grand Final, losing twice in the meantime (2003 to Centrals and 2012 to Norwood).

    Wow 2 years on and only one previous comment! Look for Kernahan and Bradley, while adversaries here on this day in 1985 at the bay, both went on famously to become team mates at Carlton in the VFL in 1986, and both went on to play a whopping combined 626 games together for the blues, Kernahan with 251 and Bradley with 375, and to date the most games played in a Carlton jumper. Kernahan also has the distinction of being Carlton’s longest serving captain in the clubs history as well. So much to be said about so many other players but also on the field is the late and very great Russell Ebert, 4 Magarey Medals and Peter “Super” Carey 447 games in the one jumper for Glenelg. Such a golden era for the SANFL, and I am appreciative that as a Glenelg supporter was a part of it all back then!

    • @AlecBurman
      @AlecBurman Před 2 dny

      Those were the days....when SANFL was the main act in town. In my opinion they played a more attractive style of Footy compared to the modern "Press and Lock IN" with nearly all players ending up as a mob inside the front third of the ground. Nothing more ugly in the modern game then to see a player break free from the half back flank and have literally no one to kick to up field. He has to stop and prop and kick sideways whilst the forwards run back into position. You are right about the talent on the field. Marshall, Mcdermott , Mcguiness also great players for the Bays. Dwayne Russell , Greg Anderson also crossed the border for Port. The strong SANFL is what made the State of Origin so good. Most of the players in SA SOO side were from the local league. That wouldn't be the case now if they tried to resurrect the concept. That's why I don't think it will be back. I must be getting old and sentimental as seeing these old games makes me a crave for the old SANFL. Like most South Australians I was super keen for the AFL concept but in my 20's I couldn't quite figure out just what we were leaving behind. That's life I guess.

      @@AlecBurman i was there that night...as i was in 83, 82 and 85 and 86. I'd say that without a shadow or a doubt, Motley was the talent of the group. to this day i havent seen a more gifted and complete footballer. he could read the play as well as anyone or better, played on both sides of his body, and played 'taller' than he looked with great hands and perfectly timed leaps...he always featured in the 'best' but what was really enthralling was watching him when he was 'on'. i recall times where it seemed like he brought his own football to the game and seemed to be everywhere.

    I wish Centrals would bring this jumper back full time. The sanfl in the 80s had probably the best collection of footy jumpers to rival any league including the VFL/AFL. So many unique jumpers
