A 19th century henequen /sisal plantation, it is currently part of the Cuxtal Reserve and it can be visited every day except Mondays, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Prices are ridiculously low, to ride the horse drawn cart is a quarter per person, to visit the cenote another quarter or less it's $ 2.00 pesos. There is also a swimming pool.     They didn't have sugar in South America in the 16th century! Recorded history shows that some spices were used in addition to the cocao beans: Nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, and especially, dried chili. This drink was often consumed while eating psilocybin mushrooms. If you've never tried that combo, you're missing out.

      @@mexicamapping6587 North, Central, and South America did not have sugar cane. Sugar Cane originally came from Southeast Asia, India. Then sugar cane spread through the Arab World and Europe. Sugar in chocolate was used by nobility until the mid-1600's, Mayans would NEVER have seen sugar except used as slaves to harvest sugar cane. Mayans would never have drank hot chocolate since they were near extinct when hot chocolate went public. Spaniards who were not of nobility would never have drank hot chocolate, it was a nobility only drink.

    Thank you for posting, I visited there 20 years ago, I rented a bike and rode 20 miles to get there. The only differences seem to be the reception center, and I thought there used to be a chain to help climb the incredibly steep stairs

      You are right there used to be a chain for the people who wanted to climb, but climbing is not allowed anymore because of some accidents that happened here.

      joseech Thank you for replying. It's unfortunate climbing is no longer allowed, although they were so steep it was like climbing a ladder. You could also get off at the different level and walk around. Short bike ride away is Kabah, a smaller ruin, but the repetitive Chaac sculptures are still amazing

      Thanks for your comment, and yes there are buses from Tulum to Merida the ticket costs about 25 dollars give or take. Excellent way to travel, air conditioned and TV on bus. Very safe.
