Welcome to my channel where you'll see me perform adequately in Zwift races, along with some footage I've filmed whilst cycling around some wonderful places (mostly in North Wales, the most wonderful place of all). Content will be about 50/50 indoor/outdoor but I'd consider myself primarily an outdoor cyclist who rides the trainer and zwift races to stay fit and have fun.
I'm a 31 year old research scientist by profession, been riding road bikes on and off since the age of 16 but seriously again since 2019. Currently riding a Look 785 Huez (or Boardman Team Sport in winter!) around North Wales and North West England. Riding for the Burrito Titans in the Zwift world.

The Hill Climb Project returned to the Cat & Fiddle this week, and with a score to settle so did I. The pressure of a star -studded start sheet was big but with slightly different tactics I just wanted to do a better effort than in May! In this video I erroneously claim to have done 300W for 3hrs. That was my aim. It came out around 287W or something, 294 NP (made up number). Still a result I'm...

Really sorry to hear just what a thorough job you made of breaking your ankle …. You could seek a second opinion if they decide not to operate - in order to give you the best chance of full mobility returning . Unbelievably frustrating after a lovely holiday and with the HC season on the horizon - am gutted for you. But look forward to seeing your recovery and rebuild - stay positive 💪
Thanks Phill. The only minor positive I am taking from how badly I've broken it is that I am definitely not doing any more racing in 2024, so no reason to rush my recovery and potentially push myself too soon etc. It'd be a bad choice but the sort of thing I used to do. This is so bad I'm not rushing anything! Fortunately had my meeting with the consultant yesterday and she was very clear that surgery is my best option and she will do it next Friday. It's a scary thing to have looking but the best outcome I believe :)
@@nickbrownbill3413 that’s very positive news Nick. And for sure don’t rush the recovery . I made that mistake with my own accident - the immune system is compromised for longer than I had realised as it deals with the stress of the repair and recovery . Here’s to a smooth operation 🤞❤️🩹
@@nickbrownbill3413 that’s a very positive development . And sending good karma for a smooth operation and successful outcome ❤️🩹
28:50 nice to see the old lady wore matching Orange 🍊
You will heal super fast, and be back stronger before you know it. I have had some moments too with mudguards hitting the down tube. proper scary. 😍
Cheers Lee, that's what I'm trying to focus on! Bleak in the short term but it will be over before I know it. Glad it's not just me, well done for not breaking your ankle when it happened to you 😂
Get well soon mate. Hope they decide to operate. I'd surely tell them how much you cycle, and that you're really afraid you might lose the ability to cycle the way you want. Here in the Netherlands they take that into account. Chin up, and let Rhiannon fatten you up a bit. Take care she doesn't steal your Zwift setup though 😉
Thanks Marco! Had my consultation with the senior doc yesterday and she was really clear that surgery is the best option for my long term quality of life, cycling and so on so I'm relieved about that even if surgery is scary! Thankfully I'm basically completely immobile so Rhiannon has no time to get on Zwift she's too busy bringing me stuff!
Speedy recovery Nick
Thanks Ian!
Just make sure you dnt use zero float cleats when back riding if your having reduced mobility
Good call mate. I'm hoping my mobility should be okay, or only affected in the up/down way but definitely want to give myself plenty of leeway at first.
Slow crashes/incidents are always the worst, heal up mate
Yeah that's definitely true, something about all the momentum being downwards not forwards, most cyclists I know who've had bad breaks did them in very slow accidents.
Good chance to review your photos of the Katoomba trip 😂
😂 Either that or look at my pictures from lakes entrance looking for the dolphins that were definitely there.

Good excuse for some guilt free gaming mate, hang in there!
Haha definitely, got to look on the bright side of these things. Thanks!
Sorry to hear that Nick. Chin up mate n heal up well.
Thank you mate!
Cool video. I almost did the same thing when I started riding in Bilbao. And if you start from the center there is only a few nice ways to get out from the city. But once you know them - the routes are fantastic. No traffic, magnificent landscape, shady roads to hide from the sun in the summer. But yea - it's not really obvious how to get around when you're new to the area. For example - go get to the Artxanda ridge - there is a super safe and mild uphill almost parallel to what you did on Day2. And for day 2 ride - literally no one (except you and me) rides that uphill with 80kmh speed limit. There is a "bypass" just about couple miles further NW. I might actually create a "how to ride from the center of Bilbao" HowTo one day :) To be fair - after I did that 80kmh road 1st time - I took the wrong turn and entered 100kmh Autovia where bikes are illegal :) Had to spring at 190bpm to the next exit.
Haha Bilbao is very hilly!!!
Tubeless ftw mate. I did one big event on a wheelset I hadn't yet converted to tubeless and got 3 flats. Converted them to tubeless, got one flat on my 230k ride, but sealed quite quickly, and a bit of pumping later was on my way again. Only had to top of the sealant once I got home. Your fascination with those 20% climbs is still quite beyond me :) I'm real happy on roads that don't exceed 8% (an occasional 10% is fine). Especially when descending that's much more enjoyable, then some nice and flowing roads with good tarmac... 😍😍😍 Think I'm describing most Alpine climbs :) Like the Gotthard I did a few weeks ago. Love that sort of thing. I'm crazy slow uphill, but still like it. Then the reward comes in the form of an epic downhill. btw, are you planning to meet up (and cycle) with Ben when you go to Aussieland?
That is very much my experience too! Glad to hear it's not just me. Haha I think for me it's because I normally like the sensation of speed, so the shallower climbs where you can stay seated just feel like flats but slower. The steeper they are you have to ride them so differently, it's the sense of accomplishment every time! But I definitely agree that a 5-10% smooth tarmac flowing descent is endlessly better than a -20% pothole riddled gravelly surface British descent. I am meeting up with Ben assuming all goes well! No bikes will be involved though, Rhiannon wasn't keen on the idea of me leaving her alone for the day, and Ben's got a newborn to focus on so coffee or dinner is much better for both of us.
Helo eto o Eryri. Did it this morning after Prestatyn parkrun. Not straight away. Coffee break and rest. Very nearly gave up with my 14 gear mountain bike. In Welsh: rhoi'r ffidil yn y tô. But managed to do it. Front wheel off the groud once:sign of steep gradient? Well I should say reached the small car park, viewpoint with info board.Great views. Should carry on a few more meters and pain next time. Was careful freewheeling down. Got both brakes done in shop few weeks ago. Can't recall doing any tougher short climbs. Apart from 2: Ffordd Penllech Harlech. And Waunfawr (Gwynedd) up towards Rhosgadfan. Think some call it Killer Hill
Congratulations Martin! Not giving up must be a great feeling. That front wheel lift is always terrifying, definitely a sign of how steep it is. Lucky with gradients like this I'm never sat down to notice it. No need to worry about where the strava segment ends, riding up to that point for the view is clearly the main climb. I don't know Waunfawr I don't think, will have to check it out!
@@nickbrownbill3413 Diolch Nick👍The climb from Waunfawr is brutal!Starts near to the village pub.Once you reach the top great views.Small car park.Lovely bendy road towards Rhosgadfan.2 cattle grids if I recall correctly.
Haha loving the resilience mate
Cheers man, I wanted to give it a real chance 😂
Super cool to see, not what I thought riding around there was like at all! Cows always find a way to thwart things no matter the country (and cow dogs 🤣) Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Illi, glad it was a bit informative! I had been told what to expect and was still a bit surprised. It is definitely cow country and they were so liberal with the lack of containment! they all wear bells though so going up the hills does feel disconcertingly like a UK hill climb.
Gone tubeless with my latest bike and was a little anxious after hearing all the negativity. But my experience so far is positive. One ride I picked up 3 punctures, my guess was while going up and over Bwlch-Y-Groes, but I didn't even notice until I stopped for the loo in Llangynog after riding via Vyrnwy and Llanfyllin. The tyres wouldn't stay at my 70psi for the rest of that particular ride, but once topped up with sealant they were were fine again. All good so far in my opinion and not too much faff really.
That's what I find Chris. They can be a huge faff to install depending on the wheel/tyre combo but at least it's a faff on my own house rather than the side of the road changing a tube. It's very rare that I've had something that won't seal (unless it's my own fault riding a full worn tyre too long) and if I do, it'd destroy a tube all the same. I definitely think it's a big step up in terms of lower maintenance
We rode down that road on your day 3 ,on motorcycle on way down to the port. Lots of mountain biking routes , definitely will return with mountain bikes.
That is so cool! Is that the switchback road toward the end? Yeah the mountain biking options particularly around the second climb I did seemed fantastic, much better than the road cycling
To note I also have a fear of cows which stems from a incident of me on a bike riding home on Red Hill Rd whislt the farmer walks his cows down the hill straight towards me with nowhere to go and feeling like I was about to get assaulted by a gang or heard of cows
They're intimidating in a big group aren't they? I think they don't mean any harm but getting trampled by accident doesn't appeal to me.
@nickbrownbill3413 it's the side eye looks they give like they are about to kill u 😂
Me about to comment on the lightening then realising it's your light 🙉
😂 Yeah no storms just a flashing light to hope cars could see me through the miserable weather!
Just steal Ben's bike for the 3 weeks. He probably doesn't have time to ride it anyway now :)
Haha I suspect I wouldn't even have to steal it, he probably wants rid of the thing at this point! Unfortunately its not availability of bikes that is stopping me ride, I've been given a fairly strict (and understandable) instruction that I am not to make this holiday about bikes. I am hoping to meet up with Ben though!
Agree with your take on chain gangs. There's always someone unhappy with something or other and moaning. 🤦♂️ Enjoy your trip to Australia.👍
Glad to hear it's not just me being negative! I generally enjoy them but since I don't want to race seems like more hassle than it's worth to spend my Thursday evening with one whopper riding everyone off his wheel and everyone else complaining about each other but not taking it up with him. In hillclimbs the only annoyance I have to deal with is myself 😂 thank you mate!
430 for 4:25 🤯 At your lightweight that's crazy... Now on to remove bartape, cut the bars, lightweight tpu inners, mini lights, no bottlecages, etc 😉
Cheers Marco! Probably 6.3w/kg at my current (estimated) weight, so definitely a good legs day! Haha and most importantly... Stop running the 800g of camera equipment? 😂
never climbed up there, only descended. Some of the big dogs in the national championships said that it is tougher than Winnats Pass which held the national in 2021. Video doesn't do the gradient justice but you can tell its bad from the way the bike's wobbling!!!
Its been a few years since I did Winnats but I definitely think this is harder! I remember Winnats being a much more consistent grind, but this one because of the flat/descent in the middle means the start and finish gradients are just crazy, in a great way. If I ever figure out a way to get the video to actually give a good perception of gradients I'll be all over it 😂
Forgot to say in the video, I did take my camera equipment to Spain and film some cycling - video of that will come but they're a bit harder to make than just race footage so will take a bit longer. Also I'm not quite ready to relive the wettest I've ever been on a bike (ludicrously false claim)
Well done
Cheers Stu!

Cheers Stu. Yeah they're absolutely great, I'd highly recommend them. Nothing like this locally I don't think :( to be fair Bhima puts in A LOT of work, I can see why others don't but running something like this in the Clywds/Halkyns would be incredible.
@nickbrownbill3413 wouldn't it just
That are some strong numbers mate. I like the strategy of going out hard and see where it'll take you, although I always mess these up :) But it seems to be the way to really surprise yourself. If you go out conservative or to a set plan, it's hard to really get the most out of yourself.
Thanks Marco! Yeah it is definitely my favourite too. Give yourself no choice but to go really hard. If I set out at 95% I still feel knackered at the end and can't give more, just the same as if if given 100% from the off 😂
Congrats on 2nd! Great effort. Not sure that bridge was worth the risk of getting stung?😉

Haha it was one Phill would be proud of! Thanks Marco, much appreciated :) Yeah that is true. For the most part it is pretty fast though there's just enough sweeping bends to be interesting/technical, but the very bottom part back in to Macc is where you'd excel I think, fast and bendy with uncharacteristically nice tarmac for the UK and every corner being different needing it's own assessment

Nice one Nick, great pedalling. Thanks for not telling everyone a 10 year old beat me.
Cheers Peter! To be fair he might have been older than ten and he's clearly very talented, maybe he'll be the next Pidcock and then it'd just be an honour to be so close to him.
In case no one reads the description I'll own it in the comments too; I accidentally overstated my 3hr pb which was definitely 287W not 300 😂 not far off, but not that good!
500w for 2min, cracking job mate. I did 485 for 1:45 on a short hill near where I live. It's just 31m of elevation over ~700m, but it has the sting in the tail with a short section of 12%. I always tend to start too hard there, and burn out at the end. Last time I held something back for the steep bit, managed to push 20s at 600w at the end. Took 12s off my segment time (which is a bit shorter). Wish I could ride those hills at your weight once :)
Cheers Marco! That's a brilliant effort as well, a steep finish on an effort like that really forces you to empty every last drop doesn't it? 600W for 20s to finish is definitely a sign of good pacing. Riding them at my weight only makes the pain last a bit less long 😂
perfect pacing plan, technique and noises i call that the “sparkle and fade”
Thank you Chris! Sparkle and fade is a great name for it, definitely using that in future 😅
You know it's a good effort when at the end I will have to lower the volume encase the Mrs thinks I'm watching a blue movie 😂
Hahaha 😂 I think the poor people who lived in the farmhouse down the road might have been concerned a spot of dogging was taking place...
Well done lad 👍
Thanks Stu! It's unremarkable compared to the top hitters but I was proud :)
