    If one of these was under load, like powering a saw mill or farm machine, would it fire continuously, as long the rpm’s don’t get to high? In other words does it only miss when not under load?

    • @BAGOTCORNER
      @BAGOTCORNER Před 16 dny

      @@mplsmark222 it depends how great the load. If the flywheel slow down enough for the governor to unlock the trip, then it would literally fire continuously. It’s all about flywheel speed, and the centrifugal force opening the governor weights

      @@BAGOTCORNER thank you. Do you know, as a general rule how much of their rated horsepower could they put out for extended work.? If they were to be pushed beyond what they could pull, do they just stall, or could they explode?

    • @BAGOTCORNER
      @BAGOTCORNER Před 16 dny

      @@mplsmark222 tough to say on hp , but they were designed to put out that hp at a rated rpm . Say 500. Obviously less hp if the load keeps it below that rpm. Increasing the load will eventually just stall the engine

    There are a couple of problems. The horseshoe magnet should be magnetised such that one arm is north and one south. You had the small magnets set up such that the N-S direction was horizontal. They should have been vertical and in opposite polarity on each side. i.e. one with N pointing up and the other down. This would give only local polarisation with a N-S one one arm and S-N on the other. What you really need is to have a N end stuck to the bottom of one side and a S to the other, ideally larger than the little magnets you used, The rotating coils in the grey part are set up to expect one arm's being N and the other's being S so that the iron is one big domain. I'm surprised that you got any voltage at all. Try setting the little magnets up so that they stick by their ends to the bottoms of the arms with opposite polarities. Tap the iron with a hammer. This will encourage the microdomains to line up. This should give a weak magnet. This type of thing is usually done by inserting the arms into a pair electric coils. They are connected so that when a current flows they have opposite magnetic polarities. A high current for a very(!) short time will remagnetise soft iron magnets. No doubt there is something about this on the Web.

    How much torque do these engines make?

  • @KStewart-th4sk
    @KStewart-th4sk Před měsícem

    Hand cranking an engine to start. First rule my Dad taught me. 1) Have your thumb on the same side of the handle as your fingers. 2) Don't try and go a full turn, only crank from the bottom a 1/4 turn on compression. That way, if the engine backfires, you won't sprain/break your thumb, break your wrist or your arm. I guess that happened a lot to people back in the day who didn't follow those basic rules.

    Great video. I'm doing the same job on my '26. I actually removed and re-attached my pulley when I removed the timing gear cover to replace the timing gear last year. I should have done this job then. I just ordered my new aluminum pulley from Chaffin's Garage in California. They're the manufacturer, and they sell them to the other vendors. What I like about Chaffin's is that you can call them and speak with David, or Glenn Chaffin and get great technical advice as well. You're not just speaking with a clerk who's taking the order. If you check out their site, you 'll see pictures of their shop, and David working at the lathe.
