Acoustic Emission Monitoring
Picture a special device that listens to the sounds objects make when they crack.
This device is called acoustic emission monitoring, or AE for short. It's usually used to inspect
airplanes and bridges for potential issues, but now, scientists at Getty are using it to prevent
damage in cultural heritage objects.
AE can detect tiny cracks in materials like wood by capturing ultrasound waves and turning them
into electrical signals we can see. This real-time data allows us to monitor how objects change
over time, identify variations in temperature and humidity that may lead to damage, and even
uncover unexpected visitors like termites.

Have you ever visited a library…with no books? That’s where you can find biochemist Art Kaplan, who manages over 15,000 samples of artist materials in the Getty Conservation Institute’s reference collection. Open a random drawer and you might find a sample of yellow ochre, a piece of brilliant blue lapis lazuli, or even a jar of dried cochineal bugs (he’ll tell you why). GCI staff compare these...

For Vincent Beltran, the term “let there be light” is key to the work he does as an environmental scientist at the Getty Conservation Institute. But he only uses so much of it. “Light is tricky because you need light to see an object, but at the same time, too much is going to cause damage to the object. So, you need to carefully manage it.” Beltran works with an instrument called a microfading...

I think they are over-analyzing.
Ed Hairless has always been my favorite actor!
I Know pollocks work quite well and I don't think that he would have been bothered about a little bit of the edge of the canvas showing. Truth to materials and all that
Big brain energy + innumerable surface skills.
Very good video on tech inspection❤, hopefully I can head to this department for an internship in the second year of my masters!
Kudos Mr Harris. You really got him.
The Ancient Blondes made those.
Apparently, the exposure time was eight hours on a sunny day.
Alxamdulilah Allohuakbar❤
Thank you so much I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to introduce mineral spirits in water, you are a God Send.
The Spanish winery should probably have won The Stirling Prize
Wow
Si hay un reencuentro de Fobia ojalá toque la batería.....le iría mucho mejor ...... Buenas noches...... GABRIEL.....🤭
As to the restoring of the paint, how would anyone know if you didn’t quite get it perfect? But I imagine the real difficulty is finding 1950’s house paint.
I really liked that movie and have always been a fan of Ed Harris.
If he used fast-drying enamel, it could have been done in one night. It sets up much like acrylic.
Who is the DP ? 🎞️☕️.
great method!
Reading the naifeh/smith book right now. its great

POLLOCK AND GEORGE GERSHWIN GENIUSES
Americas's greatest genius? Is it Frank Lloyd Wright?
Theres no way it was taken in 1826 bro
Other than it being a documented fact, you're absolutely correct. Bro. 😏
Laura Owens 👎👎👎👎, Clayton Echards 👍👍👍👍, may she be held accountable for her actions🙏🙏
Is this the same Laura Owens?
@@teresaamanfu7408 this is a completely different person LOL
Growing fond of your videos with each watch.
The first woman is insufferable.
I know this is an old video. But I’m happy to say I am getting wonderful results in a gas kiln using a ilite clay ! Firing techniques are very important for success and the people in this lecture are spot on except max temp can range depending on clay source. But from my tests, K rich iron rich clays are important for best results. Cheers
let your slips settle longer than a month.
@@johnbooth1110 thanks for the tip! I will try that.

I bet Clayton could do a better job than this
This is a different person.
I saw the film several years ago. I’ve always been a fan of Ed Harris and his portrayal of Pollack is amazing!! I didn’t know that Harris directed the movie and was so involved in its development. It shows.
Amazing that this remarkable film ever got made a real Labour of love and probably one of the best movies ever made about an artist.
@spoiler
These ong's are behind the des-trux-ion of Western culture/civilization. Stop electing these Goons.
In my extreme old age it’s lovely to have a memory jog of the things. I am still hoping to work on and with. Thank you so much for keeping this. And I’m also thrilled that the audience seems to find it as much fun as I did. With love, Denise.
Do these microemulsions that you have shown in your videos have to contain any preservatives? thank you
Thanks for the video, what is this type of micro emulsion used for? Can it be used for textiles?
Do you guys know her history ?
This is a different Laura Owens, not the one involved in the Bachelor drama.
this is such a great video!!!!!!!!!
I think 🤔💭 well actually I know it's probably the most disrespectful thing any creature/being living or dead with a soul or not can do. disturb the rest of the dead and in their own place of rest of all places. And of royalty of all. What a shame 🤦♂️ It makes me wonder like is it hate that does that. 🤔 Jealous envy greed. Perhaps it's just money for the money yea something up that alley Like how can anyone plot. scheme like yea we're going to a known burial place resting place where groups of Kings and Queen of a once powerful rich culture are buried with everything that they loved in life or just had great meaning too and we're gonna take it take them and use them have them for our own benefits
Was I the only one creeped out by that music?
Let's be real here, Northern India is the Cool India...
What if it just keeps flashing the number after pressing calibrate but I never get the smiley face?
This is the reason they thought “ Lucy” walked upright and was our ancestor. There were no feet or hands with Lucy . Since then Africans africannus ( whatever ), Lucy has been found to have opposing great toes. She was a tree dweller and 3.5 feet tall. No more than an extinct chimpanzee.
Promo SM 👏
Jackson Pollack's art looks cool, and I very much doubt any of his critics could/would do the same thing. That is what so many of these "I could do that" people miss. Why didn't you then?
Excelente!!
I listen to this while reading. It’s beautiful.
Great stuff. Love De Wain. Always wanted to meet him.
This mural reminds me of home and childhood. I used to live near the museum where it's usually on display in Iowa. I strongly prefer traditional art, but this painting always impressed me. It is quite beautiful in person, and that was before the restoration. It is a lovely mesh of surrealism with action painting.
Do these corrosion issues happen on bronze sculptures?
Meanwhile in Afr.....never mind. Cleopatra was black ehem...ehem.
