Ok but what's really the difference between chicken manure, steer manure, and mushroom manure?

Hi there, all are "manures" and are good for boosting gardens but they have different compositions because of what they are made of. Mushroom manure is a combination of barnyard manure (chicken/ horse/ steer etc) plus straw and lime. It's actually spent compost that previously has been used to grow edible mushrooms, and then once it's served it's purpose, it's passed on to gardeners to serve it's second purpose. Since mushrooms need higher PH's to grow, lime is added to the mix. So in that regard, you would want to sparingly use mushroom manure around acid-loving plants such as rhodos, azalaeas etc. Mushroom manure tends to be great for veggies. In our garden centre it's the #1 choice for veggie gardeners by a long shot. People in this area of the world grow lots of leafy vegetables like kale, cabbage, lettuce plus veggies like tomatoes, zucchini, peppers etc from spring to fall. Steer manure is cattle manure that often contains a fair amount of straw/ hay etc. The PH of steer manure tends to run on the acidic side so it's good for typical garden plants but really great for acid-loving plants like rhodos/ azaleas etc. Chicken manure is from chickens and is considered the "hottest" of the bunch, meaning it is extremely potent in uncomposted form and can actually burn plants due to high ammonia content from chicken urine. Chicken manure is considered a high nitrogen fertilizer so it's great for green leafy plants. Chicken manure has quite low, acidic PH as well. Something to keep in mind, for all 3 manure products you want to make sure you're getting well-composted manure. The composting process reduces the "hotness" of the manure and does a better job of balancing the PH, making it safe to put on almost any plants in the garden. If the manure doesn't stink at all, it's well-composted. If it's incredibly smelly, you know that it's on the fresher side and you'll probably want to use less otherwise you can risk burning the leaves of your plants. As far as what is best for you, you might want to ask long-term gardeners what manure they prefer to use. Everybody has their preferences and special formulas. There are customers that come in that only buy chicken manure and nothing else. They swear by it. Others will only use steer manure because every year they have a successful veggie garden and they're not going to stray from that formula. Use Google searches as well and see what gardeners prefer. You'll find a thousand opinions and I don't think any of them are wrong! There's plenty of ways to get healthy, lovely plants and there's certainly no one right way to do it.
