This is actually really cool, and I think it would’ve worked great in the game with Knuckles portion of Lave Reef Zone Act 2! But knowing it was used for Lagoon city Zone Act 2 means at least this gem didn’t go unused forever!

They could have had a middle ground if they really wanted to - use the classic one we got in game, for act 1, and then this for act 2 or something. Would have been unique at least.

My theory of being unused is because the used the same motif three times with the Invincibility, Speed Shoes and Super Sonic and they didn't want us to hear the same music over and over
