The Pop Group

The Pop Group formed in Bristol in 1977 out of a sense of disenchantment with the increasing conservatism of punk. Drawing on an eclectic range of influences, from free jazz, conscious funk, heavyweight dub to avant-garde experimentalism, they were at the forefront of a musical period marked out by its groundbreaking innovation, alongside contemporaries like Public Image Limited, This Heat and Throbbing Gristle.
Their return represents post-punk provocation for a contemporary era. Through reissues and compilations of archival material as well as new albums Citizen Zombie (2015) and Honeymoon On Mars (2016), the group have emphatically renewed their relevance, proving as incendiary as ever.
The Pop Group's resurgence has continued apace with worldwide tours as well as the definitive 40th anniversary reissue of Y in 2019 and the acclaimed release of Y in Dub in 2021, a dub reconstruction of their debut album made alongside longstanding collaborator Dennis Bovell.

I first started listening to The Pop Group back in the early 80's when i was a kid. And even today the more I listen the more I realise just how talented these guys were/are. You never tire of hearing their stuff and every time you listen you hear something more revealing. A band with a massive skill set and huge social awareness in which the lyrics still apply to today. At the time a completely underrated talent, which I feel is now being appreciated for what it is.

Phenomenal group and music
As a huge fan of this group, I am utterly ashamed that I have only just learned of Mark Stewart's death on the 21st April 2023. John Waddington also died exactly two months later on 21st June 2023. Of all the bands from any time or genre, I would have loved to see them live, an ambition that will now never be realised. As of right now, today, I am absolutely gutted. There will never be another group to replace them.
This was probably their best album. And 'Y'.
