Arab-Jews Before and After Israeli Statehood with Maayan Hilel
Since this fall, intense attention has turned to Israel and Palestine. Many on campus who are following events find themselves with basic questions about actors, geography, contested narratives and even the words used to describe what is happening. This speaker series aims to help fill some of these gaps. Jointly sponsored by the Middle East and North Africa Studies Program, the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies and the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the initiative seeks to offer the Northwestern community knowledge on this vital history from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. Sessions will feature renowned scholars from the U.S. and abroad from a wide range of personal and academic backgrounds, and are open to members of the Northwestern community.
In this talk, Maayan Hilel delved into the term "Arab-Jews" as both a cultural and historical identifier, shedding light on the multifaceted social, political and cultural experiences of Arabic-speaking Jews in the Middle East and North Africa from the late nineteenth century until 1948. Special attention was devoted to examining the impacts of the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948 on Arab-Jews, a significant number of whom-approximately 750,000 individuals-arrived in the newly-established State of Israel in the years following 1948.
Maayan Hilel is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Jewish & Israel Studies, and Assistant Director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish & Israel Studies at Northwestern University. She is a historian of the modern Middle East specializing in the cultural and social history of Palestine / the Land of Israel. Her book manuscript explores the emergence of modern leisure culture in Palestine's urban centers during the formative years of British rule (1918-1948). Relying on relational history, it examines intercommunal relations and cultural transformations within Jewish-Zionist and Palestinian-Arab societies.

I've really enjoyed this series and was especially looking forward to watching the recording of this talk -- I am disappointed however that no one thought to tell the speaker to pause and fix her mic, as the audio is so distorted that there are many sentences in this talk that were entirely unintelligible due to that solvable technical issue. I recommend that the speaker consider publishing this lecture in written format or perhaps rerecording it somehow, as the topic is so important, but I often couldn't understand what she said and can't recommend this talk to others or for inclusion on a syllabus for this reason. Truly about 20% of it was totally lost for me and for the rest I had to really focus and repeat some sections to understand

...what a useless panel of commentators... In fact, answers are very simple : russia is rejecting totally American supremacism, as most of the world do today. Now, if you think that in the hope of regime change, russian people may get rid of Poutine, a man who restored the country, its economy, its society within a democracy (you may like it or not, but when you are talking about elections, that's democracy...) You keep dreaming, with a population of 150 millions out of which 80% are in his favor. No, Poutine will not use nuclear weapons, and no, Poutine will not invade baltic states, Poland, etc. He is too busy to satisfy a people which have never been into a democratic system before, to deal with the craziness and hate of those countries who are still in the soviet union era. The world is changing, the time of the US hegemon is passing. Americans should better spend their time to save the american dream, rather than to listen to globalists and war mongers.

If Ukraine had kept at least some of the nuclear weapons it had Putin wouldn't have dared to invade it nor wouldn't have stolen Crimea and Donbass in 2014. Ukraine had then 7 years to prepare to resist and also to join Nato, because being neutral doesn't mean Putin will respect it. He only respects force. I don't think Putin will use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. The Soviet Union didn't use them in Afghanistan, Stalin and subsequent leaders didn't use them in any of the crisis like Berlin, Hungary, Cuba, so it is unlikely Putin would wish to commit suicide and start now. Specially if he thinks Ukraine is a part of Russia. USA also did not use them in war after using 2 to end the war against Japan, not in Korea, when it could have end the war soon, nor in Vietnam, nor in Afghanistan or Iraq in the wars against terror. But Ukraine must get all the weapons it needs to defend its territory against the Russian aggression. For example, if it had longer range missiles that could reach the naval base Sebastopol and destroy or damage it so it can't be used to control the Black Sea and blockade the ports of Ukraine and stop its exports, Putin will have to admit a defeat and negotiate to restore all the territory it took from Ukraine and let its government to decide if it wants or not to join Nato, as a guarantee to keep its independence.

The dinosaurs were annihilated by forces beyond their control but looks like the itch to use nuclear weapons is a self fulling prophecy forgetting the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear holocaust. The US since 1945 has run amok unfettered, invading Afghanistan, Iraq, syria, Libya and assisting the slaughter in Yemen. The panel looks like a gang of overcompensated fat boys talking bull. Well, as you sow, so will you reap. The Russians understand human life. They sacrificed 22 million in WW ll. Question is whether the West understands that the Ukrainians are being used as cannon fodder by the arms industry? The panel should pay less attention to Main Stream Media propaganda to seem credible.
