Edgebanding on the Cheap
Edge banding is an easy way of making plywood look like solid wood. Plywood is often more stable and, in larger pieces, will be less subject to moisture. However, you don’t always want to know you’re looking at plywood. Expensive machines and cutters are available to make this task fast and easy but I would rather take a few extra minutes and not spend the money so here is how I edge band plywood for very little money. Thank you for watching, liking, and subscribing. I appreciate your support.

Saw Cart: Streamlining Under Bench Storage
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 8 lety
After uploading my last video about my under bench planer cart, I decided to make a short video showing the under bench saw cart I made to match it. Also using veneer edged plywood and the Kreg Jig, I am showing the change that rolling carts under the bench has made to the amount and quality of storage in the microshop. Not only are the chop saw and planer much more accessible and easier to use...
Low Profile Scrap Wood Planer Cart and 5000 Subs
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed 8 lety
A couple of months ago I built a scrap wood planer cart using a recycled cabinet made from 3/4 inch plywood. Using the Festool track saw, some low budget edge banding, and the Kreg Jig, I was able to put this together in short order. Now I don’t have to lift the planer onto the sawbench. It easily rolls out into the middle of the shop and also adds storage by holding my favourite fasteners in p...
Building the Gramercy Bow Saw Kit

This video shows a few of the details involved in the construction of a Gramercy bow saw kit, that I purchased a while ago at Lee Valley. The kit sat around in the shop for over a year because I had too many other things to do, until I finally decided I wanted to get it built. It was a fun project, and I think the kit is well worth the money. I have a top of the line bow saw now that I built en...
Scale Model Framing Lumber: Tiny Woodshop Pt 2

Ever wanted to model a project using scale model construction lumber? Staying Warm at 38 Degrees: Microshop Heating

I’m often asked why I don’t build a bigger woodshop and a big part of the reason is easy heating in this climate. Of course money is the other big reason, but it is always very nice to be able to walk into a warm, inviting woodshop at any time of the year - and not spend a bundle in the process. Here is a short video comparing the inside and outside of the microshop in cold winter conditions. T...

a Better Idea for a Platen sub base is to "Notch" out a small section of your plywood sub base simply to fit around the bandsaw blade .Just wide and deep enough to clear the blade No worries about a thin piece braking off : ) Cheers ~

I think Tim needs to do some quality checks on his products before he ships them out shouldn't be responsibility owner to fix those types of issues. Tim could use a gauge to Simply check the diameter at the bottom too just as you did and he should develop a process or he doesn't increase the size by bruising it.

FYI--Waterstones should only stay in water for a maximum of 3 minutes before sharpening. When you are done with them, they have to dry out completely. If you leave them in water all of the time, cracks will form as well as getting moldy. Once moldy, you will have to throw them out.

I’ve made a lot of drawers w 1/2” ply and Kreg jig with no issues. You have to reset the jig and bit accordingly and use standard bar clamps to hold parts tight, but never had issues w movement. If you didn’t have bar clamps and had to rely on just the Kreg hole clamp, I could see that prove challenging. I typically float bottom or screw just the back similar to Next Level Carpentry’s technique. I have have never seen the bottom screwed in like yours which could also have contributed to a challenging alignment and could cause some long term challenges with wood movement. Certainly love dovetailed drawers, but pending the application pocket screws are a great alternative with much faster production speed and still exceptional strength that’s been proven in scientific testing.

    • @isthislive464
      @isthislive464 Před 7 měsíci

Agreed, I use four 90 degree clamps on top to hold the sides square and flush, then clamp the bottom along the side with two long F clamps. This keeps everything in place while sinking the pocket screws. It takes a little bit longer to assemble with the clamps, but we’ll worth it for tight joints. A little glue at the joint is always a good thing too.

Like your vids BTW. My biggest issue with my micro-shop has been cleaning the floor , SO, my latest approach has been to cantilever my solid benches/machine stands off the rim joists on the outside walls of my cabin ... Voila, cleaning made much easier. No machine stand legs to interfere. ...… My bench grinder is mounted on a board to be clamped where needed and can be stored away on the underside of my bench ...… I also bolted plywood to my drill press table for casters/stability and have 4 carriage bolts attached to the plywood, [ head down ] that can be retracted with a drill driver to move my drill press around on my bench.... Rock solid...... The micro shop constantly evolves.

I build automation for a living and have been for over a decade. So this should have been a breeze for me. It took me 9 hours. Instructions were good, missing a few details but good overall. I used a 3/16 bit to put in all those inserts in the wasteboard. Put it in my impact driver and a half hour later or so, I was done. My best advice is make sure you read the instructions completely for a given section before you start the assembly. I jumped the gun a couple times and only later learned I omitted a step. They show the completed assembly first, then break down how to do each part of it. My experience and confidence worked against me somewhat in this aspect. Thus far, besides a bad Pushbutton PCB - which inventables shipped out to me at lightning speed as soon as they heard about the issue - the machine has been solid.

So many comments here, where to start. Yes I agree, you must have that big box store like crap plywood. Here is what I have learned that might help 1. Use a good finishing saw blade 2. Use a striking knife or utility knife to prevent tear out 3. Use blue painter's tape on the cut line 4. Make or buy a zero clearance insert 5. Use kreg micro pocket jig AND the appropriate screws for that jig & 1/2 material. You should not have screws coming thru the end if the depth stop is set correctly 6. Use kreg corner clamps and face clamps. As you may know, the pocket hole is tapered, and when you drive screws in it shifts the piece. Even if you are using the kreg clamps, make sure to clamp scrap blocks tightly into place to hold things from shifting while screwing together (setup matters). 7. Use baltic birch instead of regular big box store birch plywood.
