Espaces de repos | Oiseaux Canada
De nombreux oiseaux de rivage parcourent des milliers de kilomètres au-dessus de l’océan entre leurs lieux de reproduction dans l’Arctique et leurs quartiers d’hiver en Amérique du Sud. Des centaines de milliers de ces oiseaux font halte pendant quelques semaines sur les côtes de la Nouvelle-Écosse pour se nourrir et se reposer avant de poursuivre leur migration sans escale vers le Sud. Or certaines des meilleures plages pour l’approvisionnement en nourriture sont également prisées des humains qui aiment se baigner, pêcher et prendre des photos. La population de Bécasseaux semipalmés a diminué de près de moitié depuis les années 1970 et environ 38 % de la population de l’Est visite la baie de Fundy chaque automne. Des groupes de conservation, comme Oiseaux Canada, s'efforcent de maintenir les plages de repos, ou sites de repos, dans la baie, sans danger pour les troupeaux d'oiseaux de rivage.
Le programme Espaces de repos a pour but d’inciter les usagers des côtes à des fins récréatives à réduire les dérangements causés aux oiseaux de rivage à leurs haltes migratoires le long du basin des Mines, dans la baie de Fundy en Nouvelle-Écosse. Il a été instauré en 2016 en collaboration avec la School for Resource and Environmental Studies de l’Université Dalhousie. Il consiste à recueillir des données de base sur les dérangements et à consulter les collectivités locales et les personnes qui fréquentent les côtes à des fins récréatives. Un essai pilote à des plages de repos pour des oiseaux de rivage a eu lieu en 2017; on a demandé aux gens d’éviter de visiter les plages pendant deux heures avant et après la marée haute lorsque les Bécasseaux semipalmés s’y reposaient. Des membres du personnel d’Oiseaux Canada sont parvenus chaque année aux lieux de repos à réduire les dérangements causés aux limicoles dans le bassin des Mines.
La population de Bécasseaux semipalmés a diminué de près de moitié depuis les années 1970, et environ 38 % de la population de l’Est visite la baie de Fundy chaque automne. Le bassin des Mines fait partie du Réseau de réserves pour les oiseaux de rivage dans l’hémisphère occidental (RRORHO). Il accueille plus d’un million d’oiseaux de rivage en migration entre juillet et août.

    I don't think making these places public is a way to save the wildlife, much of which does NOT get along well with humans, especially those who think it is only to be enjoyed on a machine, or with a pet tertiary predator that they cannot seem to keep at home or leashed. We must make the distinction between "protected from development but for human recreation" vs "protected for the benefit of the rest of the species on the planet." We have key areas in the Maritimes that are fighting every few years, over and over against golf course developers. We MUST have legislation that at least keeps these fights from happening repeatedly.
