I literally ran across an old lady buying tropical milkweed at my nursery and I told her that she should get the Narrowleaf (this nursery has native and nonnative milkweeds) and she told me they liked it so it was fine! The San Fernando Valley species of native walnut is Juglans californica and is used for a rootstock for commercial English Walnuts that you buy in the market. I recall hearing that the San Fernando Valley has its own special subspecies. As per wikipedia, the Jepson Manual considers the walnut native to Southern California, Juglans californica that grows in the transverse range, the Santa Monica Mountains and Los Angeles area valleys) to be separate species from the walnut that grows in North-Central and Northern California, Juglans hindsii. The California Native Plant Society considers them to be the same species, genetics suggests they are closely related species. I am not a formally trained botanist, but I'm familiar with both, and find them to be easily distinguishable at first glance and that their nuts alone also have easily identifiable differences.

Willows have an incredible root system. In a suburban setting they will find your sewer line and plug it. Unless like me you are in an odd and rare geological setting. My house at 50 meters above sea level is just 2 meters above an Ice Age marine beach. It is a water filled sedimentary layer with several natural springs along the street. I have taken advantage to plant an Arroyo Willow, Salix lasiolepis. It tapped the spring, and not the sewer. The tree is fine, but the added fun are Morning Cloak butterfly caterpillars.

It’s a long explanation as to why but I ended up with a miniature walled garden with raised beds as the only accessible space for my pug. She has no preference of surfaces for her potty needs. I finally decided to use gravel in the paths and got three samples of gravel sizes, and checked to see what would not get stuck in her paws. Happy accident, gravel is much easier to pick up after her. Should have done this years ago.

So this is just giving us all the questions we likely already have about planting natives without giving us any of the information on finding the answers. How do I know what kind of native plant likes the kind of native soil I have or the kind of sun availably? It sounds like I already have to know things about the plant and my soil in order to successfully plant it which is what I thought this was going to answer. All of this applies to any plant in any garden.

Did I hear correctly? When planting native plants dig a hole twice as wide and half as deep as the plant? Won't that leave too much of the root ball left sticking out?

That’s what she said but I don’t agree with that at all. I’ve planted thousands of California native plants of sizes from one gallon to 15 gallon and I’ve always planted them with the soil surface in the pot level with the surrounding ground.
