Enjoy the opposite of silence!! Check out this delicious spaced-out jam version of "Enjoy the Silence" from the Postal Service! The Postal Service was so awesome! We were so lucky to see them @ Kilby Block Party last night. Death Cab performed a killer set and then took a 15 minute break before the Postal Service took the stage (with the repeat performers like Benjamin Gibbard changing from black to white). The Postal Service delivered an amazing performance and the crowd was so into it. Most of the festival performers haven't done any encores, but the Postal Service did, thankfully. Ben Gibbard and Jenny Lewis kicked off the encore with an acoustic version of "Such Great Heights" and then the full band came back out and played "Enjoy the Silence." What a great song to cover! Chills! Just wow. Jenny and Ben's acoustic version of "Such Great Heights" was amazing @ Kilby Block Party! The whole audience was enraptured by the moment and performance. Plus this is one of The Postal Service's best songs. I love everything about this song and this performance. Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service were the headliners/closers for night one of Kilby Block Party 2024. Death Cab came out all in black and killed their set as they performed their transcendent album "Trasatlanticism" front to back. Then after about a 15 minute break, they came back out all in white, joined by Jenny Lewis and kept up, or improved upon, their great vibe. When The Postal Service wrapped up their set, the audience was just wowed, but then Jenny and Ben came back out for the encore, just the two of them, and knocked it out of the park with this number. Then the rest of the band came back a closed things out with an awesome cover of "Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence." Just love this song! I love the bluesy stylings. I love it's patience and the patience and perspective it teaches. “Slow down, you crazy child. You're so ambitious for a juvenile. But then if you're so smart tell me why are you still so afraid? Where's the fire, what's the hurry about? You better cool it off before you burn it out. You got so much to do and only so many hours in a day.... Slow down, you’re doing fine. You can’t be everything you wanna be before your time.... Vienna waits for you.” It was a great night with Billy Joel and Sting in San Diego, but it rained on and off most of the time, with the rain really picking up just as Joel was starting this song with Joel points his hands heavenward and saying "That's what else He's got. Ok. Terrific. Great. Ok." And then he intro-ed the song as just another "album track." Everybody was into it. Joel explained (per CNN) the use of Vienna as a metaphor for the rest of one’s life stems from an encounter in the city with his father. As the singer-songwriter has explained during performances and interviews, his parents separated when he was a child, and he was estranged from his father until the two reconnected in Vienna in his 20s. During that trip, a conversation they had made a lasting impression on him. “'We were walking in the city and I remember seeing an old lady sweeping the street and I said ‘Dad it’s kind of sad that that poor old woman has to do that kind of work.’ He said, ‘No, she has a job, she feels useful, she has a place in our society,’” Joel explained in a 2008 interview with The Republican newspaper. “I realized they don’t throw old people away like we tend to do here in the States,” he continued. “They allow for people who are aged to have a useful place in the scheme of things and I thought y’know that’s a good metaphor for someone my age to consider. You don’t have to squeeze your whole life into your 20s and 30s trying to make it, trying to achieve that American dream, getting in the rat race and killing yourself. You have a whole life to live.” This song is a B side to "Just the Way You Are," another awesome Joel track. Great night @ Petco with Sting and Billy Joel. Vampire Weekend killed their set! The audience was so into it! Ezra Koenig graciously invited a young local guy (Connor) to play piano intro for "Connect," and he did a good job. The crowd was so into VW's performance that they embraced this too and started chanting Connor's name, who totally ate it up. Such a fun night with with Vampire Weekend closing out the first night of Kilby Block Party. "Connect" is a great song off of Vampire Weekend's latest album Only God Was Above Us. I'm not sure what the song means but maybe it represents a yearning for past connections that cannot be remade. "The memories don't fade, surprising fate for days you elegantly wasted before you lost your spark, took acid in the park while living in a basement. Now is it strange I can't connect? It isn't strange, but I could check. Walked around to where we kept the box of wires and lately. I know once it's lost, it's never found." I wondered if the "elegantly wasted" lyric was a shout out to INXS's album and song with the same title. That was INXS' last album before Michael Hutchence untimely death. Also, I kinda think VW might be sampling their own song "Mansard Roof" in this song. I'll be uploading more highlights from Vampire Weekend and the rest of Kilby Block Party here: czcams.com/play/PLmls2kb62BWKbaXRYnE3oM2XJWCtIdSi4.html Enjoy.

Cool song. (Sorry I had to keep shooting the video so high to avoid all the people walking into the concert). Johnny Marr was great. Such a treat to see the Smith's legend live. And not just Smith's, lots of work with the Pretenders, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, the Cribs, Kirsty MacColl, Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Bryan Ferry and Hans Zimmer. Marr played three Smith's songs in his opening set of seven songs, and then came back onstage with The Killers to play "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" along with "Mr. Brightside." A lot of The Killers' songs evoke some sort of longing nostalgia tinged with hope. Maybe it's part of their channeling the Boss at times, but this song definitely does that both sonically and lyrically, "We're breaking all the rules, to find that our home has long been outgrown. Throw me a life line, cause honey I got nothing to lose." The band sounded great. Brandon Flowers lives in the Salt Lake area and he said that his wife and in-laws were in attendance. The Killers treated us to a 26-song set, including a little four-song set near the end from their recent album Pressure Machine, which was inspired by some of Brandon's growing up years in Nephi, Utah (a small rural town about 85 miles south of SLC). The performance was at Vivint Arena in SLC, UT. Brandon Flowers is such a great showman and the band sounded great. Johnny Marr opened for The Killers. Just a really great concert and night! Insanely infectious and so much fun live! This song is straight pop/rock/alternative/new wave-fusion perfection. This is one of the classic hits off-of The Killer's iconic debut Hot Fuss, and the band's second single. It took a minute for people to catch onto The Killers, so this song's standing is probably even bigger than it was at the time of release. The Killers were great, with Brandon Flowers returning home to play in front of his wife and in-laws. This video is an homage to the band's origins and their Vegas hometown. Fowers says this song is about his relationship with his wife: “I like the idea of where me and my wife have gotten to and where we headed. An overriding theme of this record is asking the question, ‘Can two become one?’ I know it’s old-fashioned, but it’s my life. It’s probably the prettiest or most romantic lyric I’ve ever written." We were treated to this song, and four others from Imploding the Mirage, (which the band had to cancel the tour for because of Covid) plus their new single, and a four-song set from their then just-released Pressure Machine, a bunch of The Killers' hits, plus the Robert Flack cover, and the Smith's cover with Johnny Marr on stage. One of The Killer's newest tracks, "boy," was a single and is now on their greatest hits album titled "Rebel Diamonds." This song definitely leans into The Killer's heartland/Boss rock catalogue and blends somewhere between Pressure Machine and Sam's Town. According to Flowers, "boy" was written before Pressure Machine and kind of guided his thinking as he started visiting Nephi, Utah where Brandon moved to from Vegas as a kid, and found his inspiration for Pressure Machine after Covid canceled their Imploding the Mirage tour. I like the song and message to teenagers in some tough years to hang on and not over think things, as things tend to work out. The Killer's most iconic and famous song! Everyone was so keyed up to hear it. It was really nice to have Johnny Marr, who opened, come back out and play a Smith's song and this song with The Killers. The Killers delivered a great performance! So good! Everyone just anticipates and loves the drop, and then dances like crazy (1:42). Martin Doherty said that the song's climax is actually an anticlimax. Not sure I'm seeing that. Rather it seems more like a well-played, delayed climax, building tension all the way along until it just explodes. This song just might be saying that if you'll meet your partner halfway, show some patience, then you'll be rewarded with great joy. Lauren Mayberry is a spitfire for sure, outspoken against misogyny and other discriminatory practices. She got an undergraduate in law (in Scotland) and a masters in journalism. Chvrches always sound good. Check out some more highlights from the Chvrches here: czcams.com/play/PLmls2kb62BWJpMMKwgskqqYFxE9X82PKR.html Enjoy. #jimjam #ogdentwilight #chvrches #laurenmayberry

I have always loved the frenetic, almost panicked, pace of this song! It feels like one of those moments that you’ve gone too fast and are on the edge of wiping out, but if you dare slow down then you’re almost guaranteed to wipe out. So you have to keep careening forward to see if you can ride it out. The OG video really leans into this too with Ezra (and everyone else at times) rolling up and down an NYC alley on a camera dolly track just pounding out this song as fast as they can. This live performance embraces that same frenetic energy. And Vampire Weekend sounded so good live! The audience was really hyped, giving them so much love, and VW gave it right back. It was just one of those concerts where the fans and the band are totally into their shared moment. VW recorded this song in Mexico City and then debuted it a few days later in Guadalajara. I’m not really sure what the song is about but it just might be saying that your family is reason enough not to “turn your back on the bitter world.” Whatever the meaning, this was a great opening single for Contra and a great performance by VW @ Kilby Block Party. This extended live version of "Sunflower" was so good! I should've recorded the whole thing, but I do have another clip; check it out here: czcams.com/video/hm0FkbupkP4/video.html Vampire Weekend sounded great @KilbyBlockParty! "Sunflower" was the second single off of "Father of the Bride" and it's always stood out as being some awesome psych/folk/prog/punk fusion. VW went all in on this live version, with tons of featured break out variations. The audience was having an absolute blast! Is "Sunflower" a contemplation on life, or just a simple ode to the awesome existence of Sunflowers? Well, as someone who thankfully doesn't actually suffer from ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) but who gets accused of, these lyrics have always appealed to me: "Sunflower in the morning, standing in the garden, all before you wake. No power can compel you out into the daylight. Let that evil wait. Strange thought upon the pillow, what day demands a date? Well, I don't know." Steve Lacy collaborated on the album version, lending his guitar playing. If you haven't checked out OG video, then do it now, directed by Jonah Hill and featuring Steve Lacy with cameos by Jerry Seinfeld and Fab 5 Freddy: czcams.com/video/sKDesEcDrcc/video.html I'll be uploading more highlights from Vampire Weekend and the rest of Kilby Block Party here: czcams.com/play/PLmls2kb62BWKbaXRYnE3oM2XJWCtIdSi4.html Enjoy.

Ezra Koenig intro-ed VW's new song "This is another new one called 'Capricorn.' [I'm] excited because I believe this is the first time we will actually play this at nighttime, something special." All of us agreed. Vampire Weekend sounded great @ Kilby Block Party! Ezra explained that they played Kilby in 2007 before they dropped their first album. He asked how many people were there and tons of people cheered, and then he jabbed at them saying there were only like 30 people there. One of my buddies was actually there and said there were only like 100 people there 17 years ago. The actual Kilby Court venue is really small so as this festival grew, they had to move to bigger venue (now at the State Fair Park).
