I am so sick & tired of all this WOKE garbage!! Gilbert & Sullivan's Operettas were meant to entertain the public. If one finds these Opperettas offensive, then DON'T WATCH them!! Gilbert & Sullivan also wrote H.M.S. PINAFORE, PIRATES OF 55:01 55:08 PENZANCE & other Opperettas, what do the most stupid woke generation complain about in these other enjoyable & entertaining shows!! To me, woke is a synonym for marxism, faciaism, nazism, islamism, & any & ALL OTHER terrorist/gangster organizations that do exist or might exist!! WAKE UP PEOPLE & see this WOKE GARBAGE FOR WHAT IT TRULY IS!!
Since I had to listen to this for my History and Literature Course, I want to ask anyone of Japanese descent. Is that actually what happens? Once the groom is executed, the bride is to be buried, or is that just something Gilbertson did?
Pooh Bah, Richard McMillan - his performance makes this Mikado soar above all others. Entrancing and incredible, his interpretation is extraordinary. Gideon Saks, the bloodthirsty Mikado is wonderful. A flawless production, fun and entertaining as per Gilbert and Sullivan concept.
By far the best Mikado to be found on CZcams. There simply is no other Pooh Bah that can touch the incredible Richard McMillan. He was incomparable. While the whole production is wonderful, there is one more performance that elevates this one: the Mikado, Gidon Saks could not be bettered. An experience not to be missed.
This is one of the better non-standard versions of the Mikado I have seen but I do not like the way Pooh Bah is played and all the dancing. To me nothing beats or will ever beat D'Oyley Carte productions, Brought up on them from the late 50s when I was 7 and their singers were superb. It was a Golden Age.
I still remember this production almost 40 years later. It was excellent and Richard McMillan as Pooh-bah was absolute stand out. Would love to watch a higher resolution version again, can probably buy DVD from festival
Same here. I was visiting the University of Waterloo for an undergrad math conference. We got to go to Stratford to see this production. I have been in love with it (and other performances - but especially this one) ever since. I even went and bought a VHS copy of this performance for an ungodly sum.
You will have to do the crying because Japanese people have too much dignity to feign injury by the nonsense that some people(s) use to excuse their lowly state(s) on this planet.
I watch this at a school outing, aged 15.loved every song.too see it again 50yrs later with a minimum of scenery shows the brilliance of GILBERT AND SULLIVAN.thanks for showing it.
This is so wonderful. Not only are the singing and acting magnificent, but the costumes, the choreography, the sets and the staging are absolutely wonderful.
I watched this during lockdown and enjoyed it immensely. So happy to see it hasn't been taken down! Every now and then I'll think of a song from this opera and come back to it :)
This production is incredible. This cast and director make Mikado one of my favorite pieces of my literary heritage. I think that it is so tragic that the Japanese consulate and Japanese community organizations are so racist as to claim that we can no longer do this production in America. How dare we let these foreigners dictate to us what we can and cannot enjoy of our own literary heritage.
Totally totally wonderful, and I’m so very impressed with the choreography and staging. Fantastic. My grandmother was a member of the original Doyly Carte company so I was brought up with all these songs. Thanks whoever put this up. ❤️❤️❤️
I first saw this in the 1980's with my mother. Oh, we fell in love with it. All the actors and actresses are wonderful, but I must admit that my favorite is the fellow who plays Poo-Bah. People who don't know theatre don't know that he had to practice from the very first day of rehearsal how to manage those robes - and he does it excellently without ever looking as though he is trying to manipulate them. He had to practice every chance he got. But that is the duty of an actor.

I remember this from the movie "foul play"(1978)
why can't we have anything fun anymore? we need to go back.
Everyone began pretending to care about what other people think, to the point that some people actually do.
Most epic entrance ever
I watch this about every two weeks!❤
If it was song in Italian it would be great opera…
Is it just by chance that Katisha so closely resembles Margaret Thatcher?
22:59 A very considerable bribe. 🤑
I have seen several productions of the Mikado including the original D'Oyly Carte in UK. This is the best one I have seen.
I wonder how this would play if it was translated into Japanese? 🤔
Awesome singing, acting, and dancing! Super entertaining.
A more insane Mikado never did in Japan exist!
Henry Ingram as Nanki-Poo has a charm and style reminiscent of Dick Powell in the 1930s and 40's musicals. This is so lovely!
I was part of the set crew in High School and we had to make the flowers by hand with construction paper and we made over 1,000 of them!!
扇子でけぇ!
I've never seen Mikado, but I remember it from the movie Foul Play. I do love Pirates of Penzance, so I'm looking forward to watching this one.
Is this considered yellow face???
The Japanese have too much dignity to feign injury by the nonsense that some people(s) use to excuse their lowly state(s).
My brain can dance. 💫
Simply superb.
What a splendid production & excellent diction --- well done all .

American accents (some of them, anyway) - quite fun!
A lifelong G&S fan, but sorry not to my taste. I think traditional versions are much much better

Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
Magnificent
Great performance from Richard McMillan as the Pooh Bah!

@@TheEricthefruitbat Oh I wonder if they still sell it as DVD
The energy level of the cast is amazing. Great show, thanks for posting!
Absolutely fabulous thank you for sharing this
Brilliant performance as good as the Doyle carte fabulous!!!!
This is one of my favorite performances of this operetta
Anyone but me thinking that Katisha looks like Magaret Thatcher in "Spitting Image"?
No "see how their gifts alot?" FOR SHAME!!!!!
Sometimes, even Japanese people can also play the Mikado.
You will have to do the crying because Japanese people have too much dignity to feign injury by the nonsense that some people(s) use to excuse their lowly state(s) on this planet.
rasis

Absolutely awsome 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It should be illegal to perform this opera without Japanese style costume and make up.
Like to know how many of these players are still with us.
The best Pooh-Bah I've ever seen! Really enjoyed this production.
Brilliant performance brings many memories

This is a Canadian production of a quintessentially Victorian British work, though…
