    I like how the first movement has like 5 different themes, instead of just a 1st and a 2nd theme like you'd expect. At least this time Schubert didn't do anything weird like, I don't know, have the recapitulation of the finale of his 9th symohony be in E flat major instead of the home key of C major.

    This coloring method for 12-tone works is a great idea! Unique intervals within two different enough rows would actually be highlighted with different colors, instead of every 12-tone collection just being the same rainbow with harmonic coloring. It’s easier to see something new being introduced. Showing much else about row forms in the animation poses an interesting problem.

    • @musanim
      @musanim Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, it's a problem I've been stumped by for years. This method is the first idea I've had that seemed worth trying, and while it does show something, it doesn't really get at the heart of what's going on in serial compositions since it doesn't explicitly show the row, and only shows row-related intervals within individual melodic lines (and not, for example, in chords or when separated by silence). To go much beyond showing the intervals would require a lot of (by-hand) analysis, editing, design work ... enough that I'm reluctant to get into it. (But who knows ... my tolerance for mind-numbing tedium has increased as I've gotten older.)

    • @GuilhermeCarvalhoComposer
      @GuilhermeCarvalhoComposer Před 4 měsíci

      @@musanim I too think this is a great idea, despite the "shortcomings" you point out. It does make visible that different (global) sonorities in atonal music often have to do with the kinds of intervals being used. I wonder what would be revealed in modal/polymodal music, or in in some pieces by Messiaen when he uses his characteristic modes.
