Fixing Flaws On My #BSFL Trashcan #Composting Bin
My trashcan #bsfl #composting bin had a few flaws that required design adjustments. The fixes are completed in this video. I'll keep an eye on things to determine if more adjustments are needed.

My BSFL Bin Got Raided By A Possum
zhlédnutí 573Před 21 dnem
I usually prop my BSFL bin lid open, at the beginning of the season, a few inches to let out more odor to attract the adult soldier flies. I had also begun adding food waste to the bin to increase the smell to bring in the flies. However, a possum let himself in and cleaned out the bin. Duel Fuel Rocket Stove [Prototype]
zhlédnutí 817Před 3 měsíci
My attempt at a duel-fuel rocket stove was fun to build, but it ultimately didn't perform. I think the main problem is scale. The 2-inch tube didn't allow for enough airflow. No draft ... no rocket. But I Iearned a lot in the process. 2" precision squares at the Greg's Garage: gregsgaragekc.com/store/ Join this channel to get access to perks: czcams.com/channels/szelk0CQwyc4LUf5zh3vaw.htmljoin

Interesting observation sir... too bad the hatchlings never made it into the food below. If the system were placed inside the chicken coop it probably wouldn’t matter if the hatchlings found their way to the coop floor. Wishing you and your family a blessed weekend. Peace brother

I have this very set up. How has it been working for you since you did this video?
Hi John. It’s been working great. I did purchase the smoke hood made for this unit. That was a benefit to managing the smoke.
A stove big enough to heat 55 gallons in the barrel, then pump to a radiator and fan set up at the other end of the house. Hot water heat transfer and the rocket stove at the first end. Nice stove and video, well done
I like that application. This stove was far too much heat for a shower. Lol. Thank you for watching.
Temperature inside not become to high?
I’ve wondered about that. The way i think about it…These bugs were designed to work inside a dead carcass in full sun. I think they should be able to handle high temps. I’m sure they have a limit though. Thank you for sharing your thought.
I know a lot of people don't like it and some really hate it, but I use glyphosate or triclopyr. But I don't spray it, I use a paint brush and dilute it much stronger than when used in a sprayer. I hadn't thought about using duct tape, though. That's a great idea! Thanks!
I’ve used the paint brush method with stubborn hard-to-kill invasives. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you which one was lighter in weight and heat resistance ?
The cob was lighter and both materials handled the heat well. The concrete eventually cracked in half, but it didn’t have an armature. The cob stove had an armature, but I didn’t use it enough to determine a failure point. Eventually the the rain delaminated the cob.
@@GreenShortzDIY Thank You for the update .I liked your cob stove and was thinking of making one ..
Definitely helpful
Thank you for watching, Edie.
Nice first one. Like a Dakota hole stealth fire on the high ground.Im going 2 standard size 2 inch thick blocks and 5 two hole 8 inch blocks.👍
The problem with this is you would fill it faster than they can eat it, also they poop which would eventually fill the bucket too
It will eventually fill up. In my experience it would need to be emptied once a season. Thanks for watching.
They found the bin so fast and grow even faster. I like the new bin. Thanks!
Thanks, Joey. I think with a few more refinements, it will be dialed in.
Hi, can we get a tour of your chicken coop? I love the design and I was going through your videos to see if you have a video of the build, but I didn't find it.
It’s actually my neighbor’s chicken coop. But they’ll let me do a tour video. And I think they built it from plans. I’ll see if they can point me to the source for that. Stay tuned.
Mix in a bit spoon of pea protein, a 25kg bag costs $100. Makes all the difference. And if in a cold environment a big spoon of brown rice flour to keep the metabolism up.
Great tip! Thank you.
I would oil the bucket.if it sticks to bucket i will just cut the bucket afterwards.
Great suggestion. Thank you.
Yummy... I’m sure the chickens look forward to seeing you visit them. Peace brother
Yeah. It’s kinda gross, but amazing at the same time. Peace brother.
I'm super-excited about your design!! Awesome. DIY foam. I have an air pump from my sister's flat tire that I fixed in 20 below F. northern Midwest weather two winters ago!! $30 I thought we were supposed to pay $350 for a foaming agent device? hahaha. thanks
They'll get used to it.
They did. Just a case of being chicken. :-). Thank you for watching.
Are you leaving a leaf for the larvae that escape too? Just a snack to keep them healthy before meeting the chickens. Wishing you and your family a blessed week. Thanks Tom
Hi JW. Actually, once they crawl out they are done eating. Just looking for a place to hide out until they hatch as adults. Peace, brother.
How will adult get in to lay eggs, and what/where is the medium for the eggs to be laid? Have you worked that out? Also, I love the simplistic design.
Actually, I was waiting to see how the adults interacted with the bin. They were able to find spots to lay, but the hatchlings had trouble getting in. I just filmed a modification to the design to address that issue. Look for that in short form in the next day or so. Likely a Sunday post. Thanks for watching.
You neighborhood chickens should rejoice at the opportunity for fresh snacks.
due to moisture (dew) that occurs quickly in closed bins (I had a similar set up as well), many have climbing out already. You may have lost 50% because the dew that forms at night (overnight) allows for mass exodus. BSFs do not like being wet at all so when moisture forms, those ready to go leave asap. So you'll need to completely sort out a more intentional "exit". Good luck!!
Thank you for the feedback. I just filmed a video addressing that issue (at least in part). Look for that video on Sunday. Thank you for watching.
Most curious... have you looked at the larvae under magnification via camera or microscope? Does the moisture allow their paws, fingers or appendages create and release suction? Inquiring minds... Peace brother
I haven’t looked closely. I’m imagining that the hairs on their segments gain surface tension when wet.
Wow. That is just the opposite of what I expected.
It is pretty amazing how quickly they realize they have new skills :-)
Chickens are so funny. I often find myself talking to them and explaining things to them lol. Great video and I really like the simple design.
Thank you for the feedback, Ema. Thanks for watching!
Maybe problem was color ... maybe chickens don't like blue ... ???
I think they were just intimidated by the new thing in the coop. :-)
How do you toss the compost when its FULL of larvae and avoid squishing them? I have a million and I really need to sometimes when i add new vegetation
I scoop out with a shovel as gently a possible, knowing that some will get squashed in the process. Thanks for watching.
I probably would have used pipe tape.
Good suggestion. This experiment basically told me it wasn’t worth trying to keep the BSFL composting through the winter. :-)
@@GreenShortzDIY Thank you for the video! Just like my Pappaw used to say: “You never know til you try!”
Yes! Words of wisdom from our elders. :-)
I used two 5 gallon buckets for my compost bin. I used the larva to give to my bearded dragon when he was a baby. I supplemented his cricket and roach diet with the BSL What I didn't give him I put in the bucket with wood pellets and kitchen scraps like watermelon rinds and carrot peelings, I didn't and still don't have chickens; but, if I lived in a place where I could, I definitely would. I live in Washington and the soldier flies might survive the summer, even though it is not very humid; but, I think our winters would kill them off.
Welcome back Tom. Good seeing your design and fabrication process on this channel. This is a great recycling project if you have chickens. New motto for this year, Safety first and science second. Peace brother
Chickens are like cats - it's quicker and easier to leave them alone and let them figure it out.
Lol! Yes I should have just let them be. :-) Thank you for watching.
Chicken psychology! I'm always amazed at what you can put together with the various connectors that TinkTube offers. Great design Tom!
Thanks, brother.
Our chickens would always prefer to scratch their food off the ground than eat it from a bowl. Strange birds. Could you do away with the catch-tray altogether, if it's going in a chicken coop?
I wondered same thing or would larvae burrow down before chickens could get them
I think you’re both right. The bugs might hide, but perhaps within the range of a good scratch. Makes sense to let the chickens eat like they usually do. Hunt and peck. :-) Thank you for the feedback.
I did this late last summer and it worked on English ivy growing way up a huge maple!!!🎉
Yay! Glad you had success, Rosemary. Thank you for letting me know.
I have been searching for a way to kill vines with minimal-to-no collateral damage. This is PERFECT! Thank you.
Yay! Happy vibe eradication!
Great idea never thought of that can really build on that, maybe use screws nuts washers and work on the burrs thanks I'll keep an eye out for your content.
Did you deal with flys? I had a massive invasion we even with 3k soldier fly larvae.
Thanks so much for this!❤ I'm very interested in how to achieve different Temps on a rocket stove. Could you do a thermometer test with different size fires? I'd just like to have a simmer for keeping food hot but not cooking it further. For food safety reasons. Maybe just elevation of cooking surface somehow? 🤔
Great suggestion! Let me see about that. One initial thought is that larger pieces of wood actually slow the burn down. I’ll see if I can’t regulate the fire temp that way.
I saw a video of a cement stove in a metal can. They left the metal can on it (which would protect the concrete)- along with the handle.
A great solution. Thank you.
You said a while ago that you were going to rebuild with a new design. Is that on for this year?
Hi Joey. Yes! That video is happening tomorrow. Stay tuned. :-)
Hello Sir Your concept is great. One thing you mentioned is that you had smoke, you should have another opening at the back for sir flow then you would have less smoke as you have two openings in front so it's block no air flow meaning less o2 . I hope I was at help
Thank you.
Absolutely Fabulous Job
It's a version Micky Ds, possum style. Free fast food.
Lol! He opted for super-sized. :-) hi Donna. Hope you are well.
So sorry for your loss. 😆😆😆 And his or her gain. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us. That was so cute.
😀😀😀 my loss! Her gain! Love it.
To be fair to the little fella, he did at least look a little contrite.
Ha! I think it was the aluminum flashing he chewed on. :-)
Remember those little latches that you put the eyelet on one side and have the spring-loaded latch on the other side and you just hook it in. And then let the spring load a deal latch 2, you can latch one of those in there where it just stays open right on the inch and put 1 on each end that way they can't. Squeeze in, and then that way you won't ever have it open enough for any big animals to get in there and eat the stuff. Just don't. Maybe you might think about that. And I mean, they're cheap, I just bought some of them 42 ninety 94 a pack of two
Maybe a cone type chimney baking the top about half the size would create more draw from the bottom, and would ignite the gasses more and be much more efficient.
i suggest not using abbreviations in your title. Are we supposed to know what the letters mean?
BSFL - Black soldier fly larvae.
Good morning Tom. Great seeing your smile on YT. Enjoy the possum’s visit; they too are an integral component in a healthy ecosystem. Could have been worse, we had a family of skunks setup home in our compost bin. Not a pleasant surprise when showering them with egg shells. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather. Remember safety first and science second on all projects. Peace brother.
Opossums are dangerous! They have a mouth full of needle sharp teeth! They also too often carry rabies! This is no laughing matter, call animal control NOW to get rid of it!!!!!
