Queensland's Cane Trains - Mulgrave Mill Part 3
Queensland has a fascinating network of sugar cane railways stretching from Bundaberg in the South through to Mossman in the North. 17 sugar mills have railway networks with over 4000km of track across the state. All the mills use 2ft gauge track, except for Pioneer Mill which uses 3ft 6in gauge track.
Locomotives are diesel hydraulic, with ages ranging from 70 years old to brand new (2023 built). Some locomotives have been converted from former Queensland Rail 3ft 6in DH class, or New South Wales Government Railways 4ft 8 1/2in 47 class.
Wagons are unbraked and some trains operate with a remote controlled brake van at the rear of the train to provide additional braking force. Trains can be up to 1km long, consisting of up to 200 wagons with a weight of approximately 1000 tons.
Some trains require two crew members however many locomotives have been converted to driver only operating and can be switched to remote control operation for shunting.
This video contains footage taken in August 2023 of Mulgrave Mill, which is located in Gordonvale just south of Cairns. Gordonvale Mill is owned by MSF Sugar.
The mill utilises a mixture of Com-Eng, Clyde, Baldwin and Walkers locomotives.
Trains shown in this video are as follows:
1. 'Meringa' runs alongside Leumann Rd with a rake of empty bins.
2. 'Meerawa' runs alongside Moller Rd with a rake of empty bins. Note the length of the grass across the tracks.
3. After leaving the empty bins on the mainline and attaching to a rake of full bins from the siding, 'Meerawa' continues along the line to Vohland Rd. The full bins were left here and the loco returned light engine to position the empty bins in the now vacant siding.
4. 'Mulgrave' (ex Queensland Rail DH31, rebuilt 1995) runs light engine through the mill yard at Gordonvale, before attaching to a rake of empty bins and departing for the North.
5. After Mulgrave had departed, 'Meringa' arrived light engine.

    We were just in Australia a month ago from Canada and when we traveled outside of Airlie Beach and noticed the rails along the road side and weaving through the fields we were quite struck by them. We were not sure at first if they were still active and we came across one of the mills and realized they still were. As we went further north to Cairns it really became apparent the network was quite extensive. This video just popped up in my feed and I am glad it did. Answered a lot of the questions I was still pondering. My first thought when I saw the gauge was that it reminded me of the old sugar cane train (now used to haul tourists) that runs through the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts, then I put 2 and 2 together when we realized it was sugar fields we were driving through. Here in Canada most of our sugar comes from beets.

      Glad you found the video! Plenty more up on my channel of the different mill networks in Queensland. The tracks near Airlie Beach would have been part of Proserpine Mill's network. It's a shame you didn't get to see any of the trains in action. The cane crushing season normally runs from June to December, outside of that there are few movements on the cane networks - normally just track maintenance trains and cane bin transfers from the sidings in the fields to the workshops for maintenance. The networks throughout the fields are very extensive. It's one of the things that makes the cane railways unique, but can also make them a challenge to chase as there are tracks everywhere!

They look tough and cool and having the side rods gives them animation. Catching the wheelslips was great ...as you wouldn't get on other bogie style locos! • @NR54trailerail
      @NR54trailerail Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks Gregg! They're pretty cool units. I think the wheelslip was due to a heavy load and dew on the rails - the sun hadn't been up long enough to dry everything out. The locos had a bit of touble pulling the bins out of the siding initially as well. They certainly pile the cane up in the bins!

      Not really, I enjoy RSUing, having a pay rise of 50 cents to do the job of two people is bull dust however. Its only a seasonal job and permanent positions at the mills are hard to come by. Todays culture requires everyone to have a mortgage they can't pay off and a seasonal job can't support that. Only RSU locos at Kalamia are the Northcote and Barratta. Invicta is the only mill that has a full fleet that is RSU capable. Being in a loco cab with another person is challenging, then coming home after a shift and seeing that person again would put a lot of strain on that relationship.

      That is a "Brake" car , equipped with a diesel powered air compressor and a remote controlled brake system. The cane bins do not have brakes, so on hilly sections , a brake car is attached to the rear , so brakes can be applied by the driver remotely. Most cane tramways rely on the loco to brake the train, but it deoends on where the MIll is and the surrounding territory. Cheers Gregg.

    • @NR54trailerail
      @NR54trailerail Před 7 měsíci

      It was booked out of service during the drought about 20 years ago and never reopened. I believe beyond Manangatang the line has lighter rails that can't take the heavier locos and the wagons can't be fully loaded. Also the line has been cut for a mineral sands mine to the North of Manangatang. Robinvale is a big primary producing area so I am surprised it hasn't been reopened. The Kulwin line is officially closed beyond Mittyack. The line between Sea Lake and Mittyack is booked out of service. Mittyack isn't a major grain site so I can't see the line reopening.

    Great shots! I love the cane trains,and spent 2 weeks chasing them back in 2014. I need to get back up there and get some more clips...they are so cool and run run some beautiful scenery! Thanks and cheers. Gregg.

      Thanks Gregg! I spent 10 days covering every mill from Plane Creek to Mossman - they're a very interesting and unique part of the Australian Railway scene. I ended up with about 25 hours of video, so plenty to upload over the next 12 months or so!

    I misread the title. I thought it read "High NOISE T class". My recollections of the T class on our Shepp passenger trains were of long trains behind a single T slogging its way slowly up the Glenroy bank at scarcely more than walking pace. With the engine working flat out to get the heavy consist up the grade.

      As someone who has worked on both T class locos in this video, I can testify that they are definitely high noise 😄

    Not the same without the railway crossing at Sunbury and hearing the trains blasting their horns as they thunder past the platforms, the days of Sunbury being a country town and not a suburb of Melbourne are long gone. Still nice to get a sweet A class toot! 😊

    In about 1950 my aunt and uncle had chemist shops in both Quambatook and Manangatang and I remember as a child rather vividly the train ride with a railmotor to visit them. I am now resident in Sweden and it is amazing to see reference to those places on the internet.Thank you for an interesting video.

    Just for added atmospheric effect, that loco looked like it had a pair of illuminated skulls just inboard of its buffers! 💀💀
