Queensland's Cane Trains - Tully Mill Part 4
Queensland has a fascinating network of sugar cane railways stretching from Bundaberg in the South through to Mossman in the North. 17 sugar mills have railway networks with over 4000km of track across the state. All the mills use 2ft gauge track, except for Pioneer Mill which uses 3ft 6in gauge track.
Locomotives are diesel hydraulic, with ages ranging from 70 years old to brand new (2023 built). Some locomotives have been converted from former Queensland Rail 3ft 6in DH class, or New South Wales Government Railways 4ft 8 1/2in 47 class.
Wagons are unbraked and some trains operate with a remote controlled brake van at the rear of the train to provide additional braking force. Trains can be up to 1km long, consisting of up to 200 wagons with a weight of approximately 1000 tons.
Some trains require two crew members however many locomotives have been converted to driver only operating and can be switched to remote control operation for shunting.
This video contains footage taken in August 2023 of Tully Mill. Tully utilises a fleet of ex Queensland Rail 'DH' class locomotives, which were rebuilt into cane locomotives in the 1990's. They also have two permanently coupled 'Com-Eng' locomotives which are used as back up locos. I was fortunate to capture these locos at a couple of different locations.
Trains in this video are:
1. 'Tully 6' crosses the Tully River and passes the triangle at Jodrell Rd with a rake of empty bins.
2. 'Tully 8' crosses the Murray River bridge with a short rake of empty bins.
3. 'Tully 9' heads though the fields near Davidson Rd with a rake of empties. Meanwhile at the nearby junction 'Tully 3' arrives with a rake of empties and completes a number of shunting moves to bring loaded bins out of the siding and shunt the empty bins in. Finally, Tully 3 contiunes towards the mill as it crosses Davidson Rd level crossing.

Love the "End of Train" Indicator, simple genius. Thanks for sharing.
@@BlackCat-fr4ue Yes nothing complicated required for unbraked wagons!
Great opening shot Sir! That was a decent rake on the last train and they were hooking in through that crossing! Thanks again. Gregg

Another awesome video Mate . 🤙🍻
@@catpower2951 thanks!
JUst a note regarding your comments: No NSW 47 class were ever converted to 2' gauge cane locos. All were initially sold for scrap, with LVR buying a number off Simsmetal. A number of *73 class* locos (similar to a QR DH) were converted to 2' gauge for cane haulage.
Thanks for the clarification, must have got my numbers mixed up 😉
Great cane train video 👍🏻
@@1044fan thank you!
Great video. They keep a lot of trucks off the roads without people knowing it. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
@@markfryer9880 thanks Mark, they sure do. Imagine the state of the roads if all this cane was trucked to the mills. Cheers!

L___I___K___E________Fantastic Video! BIG LIKE and Thumbs Up!
Thank you! Plenty more cane train videos coming, particularly from the Mackay Region.
Great video, Hello from the east coast of south africa, we too have a huge sugar industry here, years ago most raw sugar cane were send by trains from the farms to the mill. Sadly most by road now! There one Huge Sugar Mill here were they have sugar trains!
Thank you!
Interesting video. Greetings from Poland. 👍
Thank you!
That's a *VERY* faded rainbow!
Another great trip on the cane rails Sir! I went through one of the mills in Mackay , they are very cool places but I don't think I'd like to work in one..LOL Cheers Gregg.
Thanks Gregg! Yes they're interesting places, lots going on! Tully Mill still offers tours to the public. I certainly wouldn't complain if my workplace smelt like a sugar mill 😉
@@NR54trailerail I went through Tully as well, was a great tour and the places do smell like a steam train in lollie factory with fresh mown grass! The grease and sticky crap everywhere would be a bit much after a while..LOL but they do smell good for sure! 🙂
Great video mate! Its cool to see videos from work 😄
Thanks 😁
We were just in Australia a month ago from Canada and when we traveled outside of Airlie Beach and noticed the rails along the road side and weaving through the fields we were quite struck by them. We were not sure at first if they were still active and we came across one of the mills and realized they still were. As we went further north to Cairns it really became apparent the network was quite extensive. This video just popped up in my feed and I am glad it did. Answered a lot of the questions I was still pondering. My first thought when I saw the gauge was that it reminded me of the old sugar cane train (now used to haul tourists) that runs through the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts, then I put 2 and 2 together when we realized it was sugar fields we were driving through. Here in Canada most of our sugar comes from beets.
Glad you found the video! Plenty more up on my channel of the different mill networks in Queensland. The tracks near Airlie Beach would have been part of Proserpine Mill's network. It's a shame you didn't get to see any of the trains in action. The cane crushing season normally runs from June to December, outside of that there are few movements on the cane networks - normally just track maintenance trains and cane bin transfers from the sidings in the fields to the workshops for maintenance. The networks throughout the fields are very extensive. It's one of the things that makes the cane railways unique, but can also make them a challenge to chase as there are tracks everywhere!
Some great shots in this one Sir! DO like those bogie bins and mini knuckle couplers! They run some long rakes at this Mill! Thanks for posting. Gregg 🙂
Thanks Gregg! A few of them would have been up towards 1km long. It's a lot of weight for just a loco and brake van!
@@NR54trailerail They are tough little buggers, and far more interesting than the "Narrow" gauge stuff up here on the mainline! Gregg .
Still loving these Sir! I do like the bogie bins over the two axle variety...though the short 2 axle bins are pretty cool in a full rake behind a pair of 3 axle locos! Thanks again! Gregg 🙂
Thanks Gregg!
As someone that used to live in Mackay I love seeing the good old cane trains from the Whitsundays aswell. Thanks for this awesome video 😊👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

Some nice wheel slips at the start there! Thanks again for posting these cool critters! Cheers Gregg.
Thanks Gregg!
Great sounds Sir! Worth getting up at sparrows for that one! Cheers Gregg.
Thanks Gregg!
There seems too be several designs of brake wagons, some are bogie and the one @7:48 had it's wheels coupled as if it had previously been a locomotive. Hi from NZ, Anthony
Hey Anthony, yes I believe the brake van with coupled wheels was a repurposed cane locomotive. I'm not sure of the history of the bogie brake vans. Cheers, Shaun.
Pioneer Mill, the only sugar mill in Australia, that uses the 3ft 6-inch gauge for there loco's
Hello from Yankland! (The US) I find these diminutive trains delightful and fascinating! Your video work on these is wonderful! Thanks for sharing with us. What is the wagon normally at the rear of the train with an engine running and a flashing beacon?
Thank you for the feedback! The wagon at the back of the train is a brake van (controlled remotely from the locomotive), all the cane bins are unbraked so the brake vans provide extra braking force for the longer trains and on steep grades.
@@NR54trailerail That is great info. Once again, thanks for sharing your work! Will stop by again.
This is your best yet I think sir! The dual 060 combo's are my favourite, and I caught a few of them on my visit back in 2014. They look tough and cool and having the side rods gives them animation. Catching the wheelslips was great ...as you wouldn't get on other bogie style locos! Was that a heay train or grass on the rails? The bogie bins are cool as well...nice to see them catching on in the cane fields. Thanks again for catching the "Cane Critters". Gregg.
Thanks Gregg! They're pretty cool units. I think the wheelslip was due to a heavy load and dew on the rails - the sun hadn't been up long enough to dry everything out. The locos had a bit of touble pulling the bins out of the siding initially as well. They certainly pile the cane up in the bins!
Thanks for sharing - I'm from the UK and just love these sugar cane networks
Thanks! Plenty more videos to come.
I'm from the States but are you guys in some sort of drought? Usually a lot of the other sugarcane trains I've seen everything is green.
Kalamia mill is in the Burdekin region - they burn all their cane prior to harvesting so the cane is black when it's loaded onto the trains.
They're an impressive sight too see 👀 all the time
Who does not like puffing steam locomotive 😮😅😊
LOL
When was this?
It's in the description. July 12th 2015.
😍
Just a note - the loco Jourama is not ex-M1851. Wilmar has been doing a rebuild program where a loco is sent away for rebuild, and another loco that has been rebuilt is sent back in its place. The current Jourama came from previously stored ex-NSWGR 7347. The original Jourama (ex M1851) is now loco 12 at Proserpine Mill
Thank you! I will update the caption. I'm a bit out of the loop with regards to cane locos and the loco list I am using is 20 years old, please let me know if you see any other captions that need amending 🙂
SOme great shots on this one Sir! The pacing was very cool and the bridge shot at the end was excellent...I sat there for ages during my visit and no trains! Thanks again for these videos. Cheers Gregg.
Thanks Gregg! I was very lucky to see the train over the bridge in the last shot, Marian Mill had a breakdown and wasn't crushing for most of the time I was in Mackay, they only fixed the mill and started running trains again on my last afternoon. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time as I was about to head back to Farleigh Mill when the trains started running.
Fabulous footage, and that Y sounds glorious!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
