Very neat story. I have a safe that s very similar to the one featured in this video. I have the combination and am able to open it and have access to the serial number one the locking mechanism. Is there a way to date it to know approximately how old it is?

Although Jos. Hall was a big player in the safe business several other large safe companies also started out in Cincy. Diebold, Mosler, MacNeale Urban, Victor and a whole slew of smaller safe companies called cincy home in the latter half of the 1800's. Jos. Hall started out with his father up river in Pittsburg in the 1840's and moved to Cincy in the late 1840's.

I worked at the Red Top Brewery but I never made a drop of beer. The building , at 1733 Central Ave, was home to Cincinnati Time Recorder. This company made time clocks and parking gates. As you entered the front door, there was a large rug. If you lifted the rug, you could see the "Red Top" insignia. The "Vat House" at the rear of the building, contained an elevator and the upper 2 floors were used for storage. The first floor contained sheet metal used to produce products and the second floor was the tool and die department.

My direct Ancestor, John Jolliffe, (1804-1868) was the actual Anti-Slavery Lawyer that defended Margaret Garner (and others) & fought tirelessly against the Fugitive Slave Act. He came from a Quaker background and was a brilliant & fascinating man. There were documented attacks on him for his actions. The trial was unusually long due to John Jolliffe's strong & diligent defense. In 1856, he wrote the book "Belle Scott; or, Liberty Overthrown! A Tale for The Crisis". This was 131 yrs before 'Beloved' was written. Additionally, his cousin, Amos Jolliffe, from Uniontown, PA was a conductor on the Underground RR. He drew the now famous map indicating safe roads & houses along his VA- WV- PA- Erie route.❤
