Titanic At Night With Hitchcock Reverse Zoom
Having some fun with the Titanic model. I thought it looked cool so I decided to share it with you guys. I always wanted to do the "Hitchcock zoom effect" on the Titanic's bow. This is also known as a Dolly Zoom. You'll probably remember that famous scene in Jaws of Chief Brody on the beach when the Kintner boy gets attacked by the shark. The camera pushes in on him while zooming out to get that crazy perspective shift.

It's always so cool when someone involved in one of these big studio projects from decades ago is able to shed new light and whatnot. Great video! To go into a bit of detail about the purpose of sheer, it basically allowed for ships to ride waves more efficiently than if they were completely flat. Even today, ocean liners such as Queen Mary 2 still have sheer. Cruise ships, however, are flat, as they're typically dealing with calmer waters.

At 28:15 I talk about having done some VR videos of this model. I should mention that they are actually 3D VR and not just a video playing on a sphere. Huge difference. It's rendered with a stereo pair of images for the left and right eyes. I dialed in the ocular distance so you really get a sense of how large this ship was. I'll put a link in the description. I should mention that CZcams VR no longer supports PSVR1 and PSVR2 but you can watch it on the Meta and Oculus and others. Of course I have the PSVR, lol.

We talked about updating it to HD in 2014 but there wasn’t enough money to do it. I’d have to redo not only the 3D animation but there was a fair bit of additional VFx. It was shot on film so I would need to get all of that footage again in a higher resolution. At this point might as well go 4K. It’d be like starting from scratch. I think there were something like 200 shots.

**** Hi everyone, for those asking about the water: The water in this has been a long ongoing experiment over the years. The basic water is a polygon mesh and I'm using adaptive subdivision (experimental features turned on). Adaptive subdivision will subdivide the mesh with more polygons closer to the camera essentially. It's actually based on pixel size so polygons larger in the frame will subdivide more than those farther away.. which is good. I'm not using the Ocean modifier although it looks cool I always wind up doing my own setup using displacement because I have more control. The other thing I will mention from here on out all the displacements are done in the surface node editor and not with the displacement modifier. Basic Wave Displacement: Since we have a nice high res mesh I displace it using a few procedural noises and a handful of grayscale images. I find if you look a footage of real water there seems to be ripple patterns running in at least two different directions. So I have two noise displacements running in two directions with empty(null) objects controlling them. You can add a third one that is larger for swells but the Titanic was in pretty calm seas at the time. Bow Wake Displacement: This is made with a grayscale image of one wave. Basically a stretched out rectangle that's brighter in the middle and fades on the edges. This texture is repeated and offset a bunch of times and matted into another image to make it have a fanned out pattern. Google "bow wake" and you will see that everything from a duck to a cargo ship has the same exact bow wake pattern. It's kind of fascinating. I tried to mimic that but I still think it's not perfect. Those waves form a V pattern essentially. This is added on top of the basic wave displacement. Bow Wave Texturing: Since I'm rendering on a online render farm, I didn't want to have to use any image sequences. You can but I prefer not to so I set the water up so I didn't need to use them. I made a grayscale image of a stretched out circle that's brighter in the middle and the edges fade out. This will act as the breaking bow wave texture. 6 of these were positioned on the first few bow waves and I have empty objects to help position them by using there positions and rotations and scale. These images are displaced by a moving noise texture which adds life to them. I made a nice repeating foam pattern using Krita. It already has a really nice brush set up for this. You'll know it when you see it. That foam pattern was matted into another image that had a long fade on one end and a very short fade on the other. Foam in real water is really only formed when a wave breaks. That creates the foam pattern. If you look at footage of waves coming onto shore form high up you can see what I mean. So the repeating foam texture gets matted into 6 of these fade images to go along with the displace leading edge textures I mention above. This gives the illusion that the foam is being formed by the wave breaking wave texture. If that makes sense. There is also a basic foam pattern that is around the hull that fades out as it gets farther from the hull. Wake Trail Texture: I just made a long narrow grayscale image to mimic what a wake trail looks like and then I added some noise displacement to it to make it alive. I think it works well enough. I should note that this scene and almost all of the Britannic shots (for the 2000 movie) where done with the ship not actually moving at all. It's an illusion of movement because of the way I made all of the textures slide through the water past the ship using an empty object. The ship is always at the origin of the scene. If a ships is traveling at a constant speed, all the waves it makes pretty much remain stationary in relation to the ship. I felt this would be an easier way do it and you would never run out of ocean mesh if it's never moving. Smoke: The smoke was made with a smoke simulation and I only did one. I made it go long enough so I can use it for the two other funnels by offsetting the time to make them all look different. Also, the smoke was rendered in EEVEE because it really renders fast and gives good enough results. The smoke was the only thing composited in the shot. Everything else is just there in the scene. Bow Burble: The water that's shooting up where the bow hits the water is done with a basic shape that has noise displacement on it. Still not great but I plan on adding some additional particles to it. I tried a few different ways to do the bow burble over the years but the displacement way is nice and quick to set up and control. Someday I'll revisit this again. Background: The background is an HDRI image from HDRI Haven and it's rendered along with everything else. Thanks for watching and subscribing!!!

25 years.. give or take, lol. This is the culmination of this model going through a lot of updates over the years. It started in Lightwave in 1998-99 then it was turned into the Britannic for the Britannic movie and around 6 years ago I switched to Blender which was such a great move for me. Now I'm having fun moving old models over to Blender. The water too is a sort of evolution. It's not the Ocean modifier but a series of displacement textures. I will say that I spent around 5 or 6 long nights working on this and trying different camera moves until I settled on this one. The entire shot is in one pass the only thing composited is the smoke because it's faster to render separate.

Under the fair use CZcams guidelines you can use clips from movies if they’re being used as a review or a parody. Exactly 2 of my 77 videos can be considered movie parodies. These videos aren’t monetized. As far as the videos on my channel that have footage from NASA, that footage is in the public domain and has been obtained directly from NARA where we have an official researcher ranking. We chose to share these videos with the public at a higher than usual quality. As far as all the other videos on my channel, those are videos that I created because I’m a professional VFX artist. It’s funny because I see my footage in other people’s videos all the time and some have millions of views and I don’t get all bent out of shape about it.

Friends and I spent the night on the beach so we could watch this launch. It was unreal. Thousands of people had cameras set up, including me. An inlet was between us and the launch pad. As the mighty S5 rose, I watched a small wave start to cross the water, moving toward us. Birds on the water flew off in terror when the shock wave hit them. A couple of seconds later, the sound reached us. I'll never forget that intense crackling noise. After the second stage dropped off, the spacecraft seemed to accelerate. It disappeared into the blue sky seconds later. What a memory. Great video!
