The Amphitheatre to Mnweni is a great 4 day hike in the Northern Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. On the way we camp near the mighty Tugela falls and enjoy endless mountain scenery. This time we hiked in June so a bit chilly with some snow.

There is a contour path along quite a bit of the Drakensberg mountains mostly around 2200m above sea level. This has us looking up at the huge cliffs as well as down in the valleys of Kwa Zulu Natal. I do this hike to summit Cathedral peak in 2 days. It is a fun and exciting hike with some scrambling and climbing and the views are certainly worth all the effort.

Watching this video will show you why it is one of the more popular and beautiful parts of these incredible mountains. On this hike we spend 4 days hiking up Rockeries and down Ntonjelana pass over the Easter weekend in April 2023.

Pillar cave is at Garden castle in the Southern Drakensberg. It is around 3 km each way from the car park so perfect for families with kids or people wanting a gentle saunter to a nice big cave. The Giants cup trail in the southern Drakensberg is a great hike to do especially if you appreciate staying in cosy mountain huts every night. We average about 10km a day as you walk along the foothills. Expect some stunning mountain views.

This time we headed out for an overnight hike to the lovely Marble baths at Injisuthi in the Central Drakensberg mountains. Didn't quite go as planned. There was a lot of water flowing through the baths so too dangerous for swimming. Oh well, swimming next time for sure. Still a great adventure exploring the beautiful mountains.

Cathedral peak is a well known peak in the Northern Drakensberg mountains of South Africa. It does require a bit of an effort with some rock scrambling/climbing. Even just getting to the incredible camp site below the peak is worth the hike.

Hiking from the Amphitheatre to Cathedral peak along the Drakensberg escarpment is an incredible thing to do. There is a reason why this hike is well known as one of the best hikes in the world.

Mafadi is the highest peak in South Africa and is certainly worth the effort. The hike starts and finishes at Injisuthi camp in the central Drakensberg. It is a circular route and I like to take 5 days so no rushing.

Probably not a good time for a swim in the marble baths, no 😅 I was once in the Drakensberg during a flood. Was pretty hectic. Could hear huge boulders getting smashed down the river at night from our accommodation a long way away. Happy hiking 🤙🏻🥾

When I did it for the first time I was only 11 years old
I can`t tell you how much I miss hiking in SA, did it for many years and did some epic hikes...Magobeskloof, the infamous Otter Trail, the Alexandria Trail, Giants Castle...so many good hikes to do... In the UK now and have hiked the Lake District and the Peak District but they pale in comparrison...

Did this hike last April 2021, slept in the cave for a couple of days. We also had huge amounts of rain but no flooding. Marble baths is absolutely stunningly beautiful. Pitty your hikers could not experience that absolute undescribable beauty you see without the river flooding.

People do manage without a guide but hiring a guide certainly makes the hike more enjoyable
