The Blues Brothers: Saturday Night Live Goes to the Movies: Glaring Admissions (Film Review Podcast)
The best movie podcast duo out there (sorry, not sorry) is back to discuss John Landis 1980 musical comedy, The Blues Brothers! Raekwon’s never seen it before and, boy oh boy, did Nick feel the need to change that. For those of you that don’t know, The Blues Brothers is a film adaptation of the popular SNL characters of the same name/real blues revue band led by Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. The film, which casts them as the Blues, follows them on an adventure to raise $5000 to save the orphanage they grew up in, and finds them joined by legendary black musicians such as Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Cab Calloway and Ray Charles. They’ve got a souped up car they’ve named “The Blues Mobile,” a killer band, and they’ve pissed off everybody they could in the state of Illinois in the process.
And you know what else they’ve got? A heckin’ good movie. Like, easily Nick’s favorite musical tier stuff. So join Nick and Raekwon as they discuss the classic musical The Blues Brothers, and how it’s an important film in Saturday Night Live’s canon that is 100% worth watching! Because, really, it’s got a sixty car pileup! How many car crashes do you need for a movie to be worth your time???

The 5 Best Movies to Watch if You Love Dazed & Confused

If you're like me, there's a good chance that you've at least thought of revisiting Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused lately. The 1993 summer coming of age flick is one of the genres finest entries, and if you're also like me, a type of movie that we had a lot more of. Which is why, in the inaugural installment of a movie recommendation segment I've kicked around doing for a while, I'm gon...

I've had the subject of auteurs on my mind a lot lately (as one does, I suppose?) and have been wanting to do a video on the subject, so here I am doing just that. But rather than bore you with the same discussion of cinema's finest auteurs, I thought it would be fun to work in a minor celebration of Prince's film career just in time for Purple Rain's 40th anniversary. Because why else would an...

      I am curious about what you’re saying that is missing in the review. We do address what makes this film so iconic by discussing how important it was for the film to highlight these iconic artists as well as how famous actors and directors making a cameo in the film is done in a way that doesn’t distract us from the movie. We do not discuss every single scene in the movie because that would not make for a very entertaining review, instead we talked about the plot and some of our favorite scenes but I can assure you we watched the entire movie 😂

While it might seem antiquated, the Illinois Nazis were a real thing and their right to march went to the Supreme Court in 1977/78. Im nearly 50 and i have seen enough decades to realise that people are more ornless the same, just with cultural differences - but the basics are kind of the same. Values are changing - and much like throughout history, some things improve, while other things get worse. What the 80's did have, was a great understanding of cinema and stories. Music was fantastic, fashion was frightful lol. There is a trade-off between progress and loss. I will say that the current era is a low point in culture, society and progress - but the generation of children now in school will change things. Im hopeful for the future, things always go round in roundabouts.

    A lot of good takes here, but also I'll say the "go to therapy" mantra really needs more perspective. What a lot of people are missing is loving welcoming community. Therapy can help, but that's also not directly meeting that need. The alienation in our culture requires a radical shift and while Tyler went about it in a toxic way, he did create community. We simply need healing nurturing space to balance out the often quite understandable anger at terrible treatment. Essentializing that also helps no one. Men need empathy, women need anger. We all need to have the whole range of feelings, and we all need each other

    The part that frustrates me, and worries me, is I have little... hope... or trust in studios preserving things. You look at the backlot fires at Universal which destroyed their vault from the 1920's to the early 00's and how LONG it took us to get Jurassic Park on Blu Ray (we got Short Circuit before we got JP) and how things just get destroyed or lost. While I love we're at a place now where things are getting digitized and cleaned and perfected, the fear is that--like a re-edit of a film--the originals will be lost for the 'newer' or 'updated' version. And that all that remains will be this lesser master. I study film music and it is very much this constant fear that a studio comes out with an expanded score, but not everything... what happens if the masters get destroyed or degraded before they can fully expand it? Or masters get lost--which happens FAR too often. Or even now with certain digitally recorded scores where the programs they were recorded on simply don't function anymore. The John Williams sessions to War of the Worlds were stuck on a version of protools that protools ITSELF had to create a patch so they could access it. All these films being digitized and preserved are now on various new and cool programs that, given 10-15-20 years may not even be compatible with the systems of the day and be stuck... forever the way they are now.

    I'm honestly surprised that Predator didn't get a mention. This movie is notorious for its look due to shooting conditions and film stock, with at least 1 notably out of focus shot that made it in the cut because that's how it was shot. But the color and quality have varied wildly over the years and even worse in the digital, HD era. There is a notably sought-after bluray where there is so film gain because all the later releases have added color timing and grain removal, to a degree like you mentioned with some of the others in the video... everything looks artificial, vasceline coated, and smooth

It is Camilla who commits the murder of the young blonde actress who Camilla believes stole her part in the film, and stole her director boyfriend. The person who is dreaming speaks Spanish, and listens intently to an Hispanic singer. In the dream, Diane represents the young blonde girl who is murdered. It is Diane Selwyn who disappears in the scene where Camilla falls into the blue box. Camilla Rhodes perfectly represents the Hollywood ideal of the murderous femme fatale. We weren't naive by any means, but there was an underlying Innocence that pervaded that decade all the same. This began to erode during the '90's, but it was nowhere near as bad as it is today. It is that Innocence, Joy, and Fun that I miss. Yes, things weren't perfect in the '80's but the scales were more balanced then. Yes, Dazed and Confused is essentially an updated version of American Graffiti, just with the characters facing the issues growing up in 1976, as opposed to 1962. It's interesting how those in '62 had a much simpler life, before the death of Kennedy, Vietnam and Watergate. Dazed and Confused follows the characters as they try to make sense of a society post all of these events. And yet it's also interesting how the characters have many of the same lusts, desires and general conversations in both films. They are so similar, and yet so different. I really hope we can have one set in the Reagan-era 80s and nostalgic 90s.

    • @NicheCaesar
      @NicheCaesar Před 17 dny

      That’d definitely be something. I’m surprised not that many filmmakers have taken it upon themselves to make a Dazed/American Graffiti for other decades (if you want a good one that escaped my mind till just now, 1991’s Dogfight could pass as a good one for the 60s too.)

    Hey everyone! I hope you enjoyed the slight change of pace with this upload. I’ll be back to making the usual stuff soon, with my next video being a podcast episode about The Blues Brothers and the next video after that being a video essay about Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. Feel free to show your support by becoming a channel member or signing up for my Patreon. The links are in the description 🤘

    I will say this, Jaws was an entirely different experience on the big screen compared to home media, no matter how big the TV.

    I think this is a valid interpretation, and I suspect it was an aspect of the righting. Someone once pointed out to me that each of the 3 films focuses on one character and their relationship to time travel. 1 was about Marty, 2 was about Biff and 3 was about Doc Brown.
