    Everyone should run some method of ending the game in one turn in every deck because nobody wants to be the person who got focused out of the game early and has to sit and watch for 4 hours while it limps on. It's respectful to run a combo or two to close things out when someone has been pushed out or the game has gone on a bit long. Shuffling up and playing again is better then one endless boring game anyway 😕 also if you build to 1v1 people out with creature beats you're a monster lol.

    I have a couple thoughts on this topic: Bringing a combo deck to the table - bottom line its a Rule 0 conversation and making sure everyone is peachy with that The lamenting of commander being or becoming a combo format - i am having a hard time seeing that personally. We all have our own experiences with the game so I don't wish to knock that, and if that is something you are seeing in your playgroup that is perfectly valid and understandable. In my playgroup the combat step is just thriving and living its best life! I would like to echo something EK said in the episode "games have to end" so I think there is always a function and place for combos, and they can certainly act as your primary, secondary, or other win conditions for your deck.

    @MadMage86 Před rokem

    First time watching the show, came up in my feed and the subject caught my eye; I have been having this discussion (quite unsuccessfully) on the EDH subreddit for a while now, actually. My personal limitation when deckbuilding is "2-card combos (not counting your commander) which win the game on your current turn with no additional cards or effects required regardless of mana cost". It's a bit wordy, but it needed to be specific enough to counter edge cases. So, obviously ThOracle and Kiki combos are a no-go, but also any 2-mana infinite +outlet Commander. I also try to avoid tutors in the command zone as this makes even less wieldy 4+ card combos easier to achieve. The basic premise is much like you stated; you could be at 2 life, been getting smashed the entire game and have no board state whatsoever, but sandbagged long enough to naturally draw into the specific two cards that auto win the game and if no one has Force of Will in hand, they have no real opportunity to respond because the presumptions of a 'casual' game did not include the need to have instant-speed removal at all times, nor are casual decks built to this requirement. It invalidates the entire game up to that point and generally requires no setup or board presence to pull these combos off; while a Craterhoof or even a Cyclonic Rift can allow an easy opening for a win, you still have to have a board state to capitalize on those cards - this is not so with 2-card wincons, and at least requiring at minimum three cards means that the process of finding these cards naturally will take more effort. As you said with the 'Rube Goldberg' example, no one ever gets upset when you manage to assemble 'Exodia' because you had to find and deploy enough cards that it felt like an actual achievement - finding 2 cards isn't an achievement, it is an eventuality.

    • @ekplayscards
      @ekplayscards Před rokem

      Thank you for watching and listening! I've been going through this exact same thing with my Shalai & Hallar deck recently. I've got Red Terror in there because it's cool! The interaction is neat but I've got no ways to find it and you still need that third bit to get it going and everyone sees it it coming because none of anything has flash! Personally, I'd rather see something like that or exactly how you've described things than a 40 minute thousand year storm turn or a bolas' citadel turn that *functionally* wins the game. Not that I don't enjoy those! But in that time, we could have played most of a second game!

  • @jean-paulbascelli1078

    I think commander, as a format generally speaking kinda ruined magic as a game. The reason I think this is because magic, as a game is just an anything goes game. Also, they're so many cheap, easy ways to interact with combos, which is one reason I don't understand why a vast majority of casual players complain when the answer cards are easy to obtain and cost effective price wise.

    • @ekplayscards
      @ekplayscards Před rokem

      I'm very much in the mindset that anything does go. Not in a cEDH sense, but I'm not going to be mad about a wrath or a counterspell. Like YES. You SHOULD remove my Lurking Predators or my Omniscience! Why wouldn't you if you had the opportunity!?

    • @Suhrvivor
      @Suhrvivor Před rokem

      "Just play more answers bro" is a bad advice because you can't possibly have an answer at all times for three other players trying to combo off. The social contract is the only thing that can keep players from just playing to win doing the quickest and unfun tactics.

  • @christopherscheller1404

    I swear every time I have an issue at my LGS, your show talks about it. I played a game in which one of my opponents won turn 4 through a combo. Still on the fence on whether that counts as a casual deck or not

    • @BAAWAKnight
      @BAAWAKnight Před rokem

      If it's consistently turn 4: no.

    • @MadMage86
      @MadMage86 Před rokem

      Personally, I am of the opinion that including any 2-card combo in a deck precludes it from being 'casual'; high powered is as low as those decks can call themselves, and I run into too many players running 'hidden' cEDH wincons in otherwise innocuous decks. It would be nice to have an implicit understanding that your win condition should be the clear line between power levels: not 'how soon in the game it can be assembled', but 'how few cards it requires to win on the turn they are deployed'. I have actually toyed around with the idea of a house rule delaying the 'win' trigger on such combos until the beginning of that player's next upkeep to give the table a chance to respond to the combo - a sort of 'sudden death' effect: kill the player before their turn to avoid losing.

  • @UGdisasterarea42
    @UGdisasterarea42 Před rokem

    I've come to realize that my Dina, Soul Steeper deck isn't exactly casual anymore because it has so many combos in it. Meanwhile my Ezuri Claw of Progress is probably actually pretty casual because it mostly just makes a big creature or two and then eats a boardwipe and struggles to rebuild, even though I have Shrieking Drake + Aluren to make infinite Experience counters

    • @MadMage86
      @MadMage86 Před rokem

      Ezuri is a rough one; those experience counter decks were really iffy because it's impossible to really reset your progress. Even a board wipe only removes the CURRENT threat, but once you get Commander plus any creature back out you can put that huge stack of counters right back down. Mizzix and Meren are the same way, you basically have to tax-out the Commander in order to stop the threat from coming back.

  • @stephensilverstein4855

    Pay for Rhystic or Tithe, why not both? Honestly what i have found is that the when one player have a rhystic and another has a tithe the one with the tithe is heavily advantaged. I would usually rather have an suedo omniscience for four mana then draw a card whenever a player casts a spell.

    For me, I am fine, when I sit down and know OK this dude likes to play decks close to cedh and there are most likely combos in it. If I play casual battle cruisery I usually think infinits or thasa wins are kinda boring, like when somebody comes at me with helios and that 1 damage one counter engine thing.... Maeh... Doesn't feel creative, doesn't feel any special, won't be a game I remember in a good way, even if the game was fun itself until this point. But that's allways the problem kind of. So we have 2 to 3 powerlevels at my lgs maybe 4. So we have random unfinished deck that sometimes does cool stuff or slips under the radar, because it's not a broken value engine. Than casual what is like a normal deck where you can expect anything from a 30 to 4 hour game. Than high power where you see all the broken stuff(combos thasa, very hard ramp, stax etc.) , but people tend to say that's not cedh that's just high power and than cedh (but I never played at that pod by now since I don't run like 30 interaction cards). Yaeh so difficult but for me I would rather play without Infinit combos. 🤔

    I love theme decks more than tribal decks, one can get into some real deep-cut stuff with theme decks. I have a Retro Frames / black boarder Ashnod the Uncaring deck that started off as the pre-con and became the crazy deck I have now. The same deck also has an infinite combo in it, I'm really interested in exploring the discussion on infinite combos more. I also had a combo breaker in the same deck for awhile but later took the Jester's cap out because if no one is running combo , it can end up being a somewhat dead card in the deck unless I decide to just start taking 6 cards out of a deck a turn. I think the salt levels would get to high if I deck though lol Great pod cast , keep up the good work !
