    My theory is that Odysseus is meeting his father in the Fields of Elysium after death. Indications for this: 1) The encounter between them happens in Rhapsody 24, right after the reconciliation of Agamemnon and Achilles which takes place in Hades, another part of the Netherworld. 2) The rolling plain where Laertes' orchard/vineyard is situated is definitely not on Ithaca which has no plains whatsoever. 3) There are no weapons in the scene. Odysseus and his entourage come with no weapons and Laertes' household doesn't seem to have no weapons whatsoever, frankly impossible for a secluded farm in troubled times. 4) Odysseus "pranking" his father is the final test of recognition of Odysseus. The whole theme of the Odyssey is the "νοστιμον ήμαρ"-the day of return. So the most of the plot revolves around Odysseus getting over his past failures which brought him to Calypso's island, and returning to reclaim his rightful legacy in Ithaca and his name which he had shamed. He hides his name both from Polyphemus (but finally shouts it as a brag) and from Nausica and the other people of Scheria due to this shame he must overcome.

    You can grip the thin end to help you tip the amphora. They would also be stored on their side to keep the bung wet. A foot flange was a liability, as you said. I'm sure amphora stands or small pits/buckets of sand were commonly used for opened vessels.

    Nice footage indeed ! I also think that they probably didn't pull their swords out, at least not until they were attacked in close combat. Those gladii are amazingly pointy, compared to other, medieval swords I have seen. I wouldn't want to be near those points in such a dense formation as a testudo. And dimly lit. And then the practical reasons you named. Maybe the front rank had them out, they could have a hand free for that (and it would instill some amount of fear in the enemy if they saw that the testudo would not be a defenseless turtle)

    • @AncientBlogger
      @AncientBlogger Před 2 měsíci
