Brass AG, the Brass Ensemble of the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana, was established in 2007, which sprang from the idea of providing future young professional musicians ample performance opportunities in Slovenia and abroad, thus making it possible for them to present themselves with diverse programmes - as soloists as well as in the various combinations that the dynamics of such an ensemble enable. The programme of Brass AG comprises original compositions written for such ensembles as well as numerous other arrangements. The focus of Brass AG is not solely on masterly performing its programme, but also on devoting great attention to the performance itself, i.e. to artistic expression and to adjusting its performance to each individual concert stage. One of the main purposes of the operation of the ensemble is to attract a new - especially young - audience, with the intention of presenting thereto a broad variety of music for brass instruments and to ignite enthusiasm for this type of music therein. On this occasion, Brass AG will present, on the one hand, original compositions such as Brain Rubbish by Christian Lindberg and Tango za pozavno in trobilni ansambel (Eng.: “A Tango for Trombone and Clarinet”) by Lojze Krajnčan with the soloist Žan Kopše, and, on the other, some older compositions by Carl Gesuald and Jean Baptiste Lully adapted by Steven Verhaert.
Steven Verhaert, a Belgian trumpet player, professor, conductor, and arranger, will conduct Brass AG at the concert. Born in Aartselaar, a southern suburb of Antwerp, Steven Verhaert first studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he earned first prizes in solfège, trumpet, and chamber music, and subsequently continued his studies at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe in the class of Prof. Reinhold Friedrich. Since 1995, Steven has been a member of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (i.e. the Royal Flemish Philharmonic); he is a trumpet professor and mentor for wind band conducting at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, as well as a professor of chamber music at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt. Furthermore, Steven is a founding member of the Ottone Brass Quintet, a member of the Brass Ensemble of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and artistic director of the Casino Brass Ensemble and the Belgian ensemble Festival Brass Band. In the past, he was a member of the Orchestre des Champs Elysées and the Orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent, with whom he performed on period instruments. He has worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Michael Tilson Thomas, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Harding, and Philippe Herreweghe. His conducting engagements have included some of the most reputable Dutch symphony orchestras and European brass orchestras, ensembles, and brass bands, such as Belgian Brass, HERMESensemble, I Solisti del Vento, Sinfonisches Blasorchester Reinland-Pfalz, and the Sinfonisches Blasorchester Mainz. He also continues to assist Edo de Waart and Philippe Herreweghe at the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. Last but not least, numerous ensembles and orchestras enlist his services for all kinds of arrangements and transcriptions, which are published by Hal Leonard, Sikorski, and Golden River Music.
