Great video! Is there a good reason why you have not upgraded to the OM-1 MarkII, because would it make more sense for me to buy an OM-1 and possibly use the savings on a lens?
This analysis sets a standard for youtube in general - comprehensive, precise, very helpful and no bs hyperbole that ruins most instructional videos. Thank you.
Thank you very much, your feedback means a lot and is very encouraging! Best, Thomas đž
A top quality video as always! I haven't warmed to that 20mm lens. I prefer the Oly 17mm f1.8 đ I have thought about getting the 12-45 F4 Pro to replace my Lumix 12-32 f3.5-5.6. Is that 12-45 f4 Pro so much better? For the OM-1, I think it is overkill for my needs and a lot. Maybe the OM-5 II will be launched this year to tempt me?
Hello Thomas, if you only have to buy one , which one do you choice zuiko 20mm 1.4 or zuiko 12-40?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thomas, thank you for the in-depth guide. I was seriously looking to purchase the TG-7 but then came across a super deal on a TG-6. I went ahead and purchased a few accessories.
Super cool! The TG-6 is very similar and I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do like the TG-7. Best, Thomas
Good video.
Thanks!
I wanted to say that your latest video was incredibly refreshing, educational, and professional. Your insights into the Olympus/OM-1 system cameras are always the most informative and logical. For travel photography, I particularly appreciate the versatility of the 12-100mm F4 lens and the artistic capabilities and sharpness of the 45mm 1.2, which remains my all-time favorite Olympus prime lens. The 45mm focal length is perfect for capturing stunning shots of Budapest's castle, parliament, and other landmarks from across the Danube. Budapest is especially enchanting at night, so it would be fantastic to see some night photography from your trip as well. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you for all your efforts!
Whenever somebody asks me what camera to buy I say "take any top end product from the last 12 years". I think the needs in pixelcount, framerate and autofocus speed matter more than sensor tech. And megapixels only for people who want to print large.
Superb explanation, thankyou
Thank you very much!
I recently got mine and I'm in love with this camera, your video was a important reason to buy it, certainly. Thank you for this kind of content.
Your feedback means a lot - I'm very happy to hear that you like the TG as much as I do! It is an excellent & fun tool!
Hello Thomas, Very excellent video - thank you. Have you seen the Viltrox adapter that allows Nikon AF lenses to mount onto MFT cameras ? It is difficult to see if it is a good product - some good reviews and some bad. I could mount Nikon 300 or 500 PF VR lenses to OM-D and G9 body which would be really nice.
Thank you! Well, I have not tried the adapter but I'd say it is worth a try. AF will be impacted, but maybe it will be still fast enough. Please share your experiences! Best, Thomas
Excellent! Congrats!
Thank you very much!
Very instructive!
Thanks!
I recently took my OM1 to southern Spain, where I visited several mosques and cathedrals. I was shooting handheld at F4, up to about 10,000 iso, using the high res. mode, which gave me exposures of about 1/60 to 1/80. The images were smooth and without noise, with very nice dynamic range, even at iso 10,000. Of course, you are limited to subjects which don't move, and you have to wait while the camera processes the file, but the images were comparable to full-frame, if not better. In the old days, I used to shoot bursts and combine later in PS; now the camera does it for me on the spot, and spits out a nice raw file! This is my favorite feature on the OM1, and I use it all the time when travelling.
Really enjoy the content of your trip in Budapest! As always lots of technicality and knowledge from one of the maters. Cheers...
Thank you very much!
What about the 17mm F1.2 Pro as a reportage lens?
Definitely a good choice!
Thank you for a really excellent and compelling review. If you have the time could you consider answering just one questionđ What would you consider to be the downsides of using this lens with the Panasonic GH6.
Thanks! Just that the Sync IS is not available - but note that the lens IS alone is still very very good. Best, Thomas đž
After watching your review, I went out and bought a TG-7. Iâm shooting timelapses and need a small camera that can stay plugged into a power source. I'm wondering why the "Olympus AC-5 AC Adapter" costs over $100. Can you recommend other reliable power source adapters that are more economical? Any links would be fantastic! Thank you for your very informative and clear videos!
For the TG-7, you do not need the AC-5 - just use the supplied USB-C cable, plug it in to any charger and you are good to go! Hope this helps!
Thank you for all those information s đđœ
Most welcome!
Appreciate your breakdown here. It helps me think through what I need.
Is there a manual way switch between the detected faces? Iâve only had my OM-1.2 for a short while and havenât got to reading about that (or figuring it out)!đ
Yes there is - you can find a detailed description of that in the manual: Face Selection/Subject Selection.
Iâve just hired the 20mm 1.4 for a few days. Wow. What a lens. Image quality, size, weight and low light performance are all spot on. And a 40mm equivalent is an interesting perspective. Love it!
Thanks for sharing - I completely agree!
I have the 75-300 witch gives me a lot of fun. And I recently bought the 40-150 f2.8 with a 2x teleconverter. And that gives me the same range. And honestly I believe that the 40-150 with a 2x teleconverter is in the same class as the 300 f4.
Thanks for sharing! Just FYI: While the 40-150 with the TC is very good, and definitely capable of professional results, the IQ of the 300 f4 is definitely better - also measurable in the lab.
Thank you! I used this guide for an upcoming vacation; my right hand shakes, and I had been unable to find any info in the remote until I found this. Your comparison photos are handy as well; I got a polarization lens.
Great to read - enjoy your vacation and take some amazing photos with your fantastic TG-7! Best, Thomas đž
Thank you, the video was of great help
You rock the most -- this was equally concise and helpful. Many thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
Hi Thomas, sorry to bother you. I'm about to buy an om5, I'll conclude the deal soon. I just wanted to ask you something. On the EVF, can I (like on the OM1) deactivate the additional information and only keep ISO speeds and apertures? I also looked in the online manual but it's not specified. On om1 if I activate evf mode 1 I can get this vision. Hello thank you have a good day
Yes, you can do that. The OM-5 is an excellent choice, I'm sure you'll like it. Best, Thomas đž
@@ThomasEisl.Photography thank you so much. Saluti from your Italian follower
@fabioinserra9981 oh thank you! Viele GrĂŒĂe đ
I JUST visited Vienna two days ago and I loved seeing your take on it.
Great to read
There are people out there who actually think that an apsc camera can be transformed to a fullframe camera by a firmware update.đ đ đ đ đ
đ
Thank you for the video and tour. Very helpful. Iâm going to try your focusing tip on the Em5mkiii. Did you at all miss a longer focal length during this trip? Is there a reason you chose the Om1 over the om5?
Thanks for the kind words and excellent questions: I really did not miss longer focal lengths, as I did not really aim for capturing wildlife or similar subjects which would have required that. One lens that would be an idea "just in case" longer focal length is IMHO the 75mm f/1.8. Regarding the OM-1: as I had to bring one OM-1 to VLOG/film, I decided to go for 2x OM-1 bc of batteries and potential backup. Also, I thought it would be nice to highlight that the professional OM-1 is really light and compact enough for travel and street. Best, Thomas đž
Thanks!
Thank YOU very much for your generous support! Best, Thomas
Great explanation. Hope non-believers watch until 10:22 at least. My takeaway was besides it all, it does not depend on the focal length..
Thank you very much!
Hi Thomas, nice video. For my choice, I prefer the ranges provided by the 7-14 f2.8, 12-40 f2.8 and 40-150 f2.8. Each lens gives me a low-light capability for early morning, evening light and includes the special those special focal lengths. Should I want to do birds in flight, fit a 2 times extender to the 40-150, f2.8 giving me 300mm at f5.6. Should I want a faster lens, bring along the 17mm or 25mm f1.2.
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent lens choices, by the way;
do they have the same excursion in focus throw, or is one longer than the other? thanks.
As I've sold one of the lenses I cannot check.
Fantastic review as always, Thomas, you are a great man, despite your immense work, you take the time to respond to each subscriber.
Thank you very much! I'm honored and humbled by your words, really. Best, Thomas đž
25,600 ISO. Ive noticed that too, customers dont really care about quality that much I have the EM5 mk1, the shutter is starting to fail at high speed And the EM1 mkiii, that is a great camera, the only thing I dont like is no subject detection for birds. I recently took my camera with super telephoto lens to an archery class and it could capture a lot of clear still images of fast moving things such as the vibrating bow string
As always, good information -- thanks Thomas. I have used battery grips on all my cameras (except, of course, the Pen F), but never really considered the effect of minimizing heat build up -- thanks for pointing that out.
Great to read, thanks!
So clear. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
There's no fast aperture long lenses from OM/Olympus (or Panasonic either). They should bring back the old 250mm f/2.0 or make it a 100-250/2.0 zoom just to match up with the upcoming Canon 200-500/4.0.
Interesting - but always keep in mind: an f/2 lens does not match an f/4 lens - such equivalence considerations are deeply flawed on many levels. I've got a few videos on that which might be of interest.
You videos are so informative Thomas - I can't stop watching them and have learnt so much. Thank you. What I'm starting to realise is that a lot of 'it' is talk. When your friend in the pub says his camera is better as it has more megapixels, a bigger sensor and more dynamic range. They've probably spent a load more money yet don't actually know how to utilise the 'better bits' (if indeed they are even 'better'). I think the M43 sensor cameras are so overlooked because a lot of people rule them out based on having 'a tiny sensor' and 'only 20MP', but from my very unscientific testing, the OM-1.2 I have on my desk alongside my Fuji X-H2 is making a really good case for showing Fuji the door. The images are equally as good, the camera has more features I'll actually use, and the system as a whole is considerably lighter and more compact. I can't think of what I don't like currently... Thank you again and I look forward to your next videos.
Thank you very much, that is just great to read. Regarding your assessments - well, I completely agree. I'm planning to expand my series on some "photo misconceptions" in the future. Thank you very much for your support! Best, Thomas đž
That was entertaining educational and inspirierend
Thanks!
Nikon 28mm †the best!!!
