this might be the time that was mentioned in Leone Magiera's book wherein Pavarotti got one hour and 45 minutes ovation for a performance in Berlin, world record. It might be this one, his voice was unbelievable, so clear, perfect everything, vibrato, diction, control. he had it all inside and measured it out, as he was the only one who had everything and didn't ever need to force, or strain.

Poor Maria Guleghina, she was obviously indisposed. I heard her live as Abigaille several years later, and then she definitely had all the high notes.

Ghiaurov's legato and power are miraculous.

The singing, conducting and orchestra are first rate but one does expect much more from the director Laurent Pelly. He was obviously on a budget but, even so, there was lots of room for more invention.

As many of you, opera lovers, i was seduced by pop culture - films, samples etc. And exactly this performance i heard when i was 15. I, of course, never could get after 30 min, but, bus drive to my school was so long, i embraced the beginning as no song before! So i was extremely happy to discover exactly THIS performance 10 years later. Now, i am enjoying. Doesn't matter quality of record or anything else, this PIECE formed me as person, and I'm glad to discover it on CZcams.

29:00 My favorite Heldentenor Hans Beirer(75 years old!) sings the Forging song from Siegfried.

In the first act, Don Giovanni seduces Donna Elvira (who is shunned as a scary old wife) at every opportunity, and this production is very innovative. This is a foreshadowing of the trio in the second act, and I think this is where Raimondi's singing and acting come into play.

Ruggero Raimondi is the best as Don Giovanni!

Stefania Toczyska, as Amneris was, for me, the highlight of this production.

One of the best productions by the Met of this opera. The Great Domingo is at the top of his game here and is simply sublime. Ovkors we have this in our collection. Quilico is a perfectly fine baritone, with a distinctive sound, but just not high on my list of favorites. Had this been the Great Milnes (like Tucker and Merrill, a perfect match), Juan Pons, Ettore Bastionini, Justino Diaz (a tie with Milnes as a Domingo match up), Tito Gobi or a few others, I'd be more satisfied. Someone sends a beribboned dozen long stem roses sailing through the air when Domingo takes his curtain call. It didn't hit the stage so could be a trombonist went home with a headache. Ouch. Mil gracias. Paz.
