    That's one of the besr saws I have seen. Cuts them right into boards without a lot of jagged edges. even straight boards and no side edges to deal with except for some of the first cuts.

    The Mahoe is worth its weight in gold. Can’t imagine running any kind of a serious sawmill without one. My question is…”do you need to let the boards dry before use, or can you use them straight away”?

      My question is…”do you need to let the boards dry before use, or can you use them straight away”? Depends what you are using them for. Most things will work better if you dry them, first.

    • @SharpeTimber
      @SharpeTimber Před 4 měsíci

      With ICF you need horizontal rebar on each row. It snaps in and holds the forms together. It also will still resist tension on the inside of the wall

    @friendlylocal3731 Před 5 měsíci

    Why did you finish the log on the band mill? Is it because you wanted to maximize quartersawn oak? Do you often leave a big slab on the bottom with the Mahoe? One of the challenges I see with a sawmill like this is getting the last board out of the log without cutting through the metal dogs.

    • @SharpeTimber
      @SharpeTimber Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, it only works out sometimes that I need 4 inches but can only go down 3 3/4 so I put it on the bandsaw to get a few more quarter sawn. If I started my first cut up a little it would have worked out. I can usually get everything out of the log that I need to.

    Very cool video! Are you not concerned about the location of the pith within the beams? I noticed that you were cutting beams with the pith right close to the edge of the outside of the beam. Speaking of the pith, what is the method with this sawmill to centre the pith on the vertical and horizontal dimensions? Thanks!

    • @SharpeTimber
      @SharpeTimber Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, I was trying to just cut the beams out without getting any pith on either of them but I ended up with a little on one. Not ideal but I put that face in a frame up against a wall so it should be okay. And you can raise and lower each end of the mill individually to match it up with the log.

    • @friendlylocal3731
      @friendlylocal3731 Před 2 měsíci

      @@SharpeTimber Are you able to centre the pith relative to the path of the saw? Of course you can eyeball it, but I was curious what you use as a reference with the mahoe if you wanted to measure. For example, on a bandsaw you use the toe board and measure the height of the centre pith from the log bunks, then turn 90 degrees and do the same. This puts the path of the saw perfectly parallel to the pith. On my Lucas mill I measure the height of the saw carriage to the pith, tilt the rails appropriately and that takes care of the vertical orientation. Next I measure from the side rail to the pith and make sure that it's also the same distance and that means that the log is in the right place on the horizontal plane. Are you able to measure in the same way with the Mahoe?
