LiDAR Scanning in Blender - Environment and Asset Creation in-Depth Tutorial
Hi. I made this video for a friend who is learning Blender.
EDIT: After uploading, the creator of the 3D Scanner App updated the app. This update includes some UI changes. Once you finish scanning, instead of hitting colorize, the button is now process and has a new design and options. The operations are mostly the same just a new look.
In this video we'll be exploring Lidar Scanning in Blender for environment and asset creation. I'll cover all the ins and outs of Lidar scanning from which apps and devices to use, right through to a step by step breakdown on importing your scans into blender and setting up your first scene. I've been using Lidar scanning as part of my daily workflow for the last few months now, utilising this amazing technology in personal projects, commercials and short films. I have designed this Lidar tutorial to be a beginner friendly as possible however I do strongly recommend that you already have experience using blender before watching as you will need to make your own creative decisions based on the assets and environments that you scan yourself.

Made in Blender Octane 2.8 Textured using Substance Painter. Some materials from Quixel megascans. My machine: RTX 2070 8 GB Intel i7 8700 32GB ram Maybe my next short will have a storyline.

Could you provide links to the tutorials you used when starting out on using Blender? I’m intending to start creating CGI films as well but I’ve been unable to find a tutorial that explains the process in sufficient depth.

I wish I understood how you got such detail in your scans. I use the 5mm quality option and all the other settings you used but I get such inaccurate, blocky geometry even on solid non reflective objects and with good lighting and contrast.

is it possible to make low poly model of scanned object using this technique?
Do you know that selecting the edges of a hole and pressing Alt + F you can fill the hole with triangles? You don't need to delete the whole wall.

Good tips. I'm having a problem with both 3.0.1 and 3.3.0 alpha. The movement using the round thing doesn't work. Have to do all moving with N sidebar that pops from right, when you hit N. I'm still new, so naming some of this stuff, I don't know. Thanks for the effort making the tutorial. Nice pile of RTX s , how much for 10 ?

Wow, I am currently doing my first steps in Blender to animate larger scenes, which I cannot shoot in my photo booth, because of the limited space. This one looks like being made with physical bricks. And your lighting of the scenery is fantastic.
