The videos on the channel are for entertainment only. Guitar making and woodworking is my hobby. I don't work for the public.
I am retired. Been that way for a long time. I now like to relax and do woodworking and play my guitars when I want. I no longer have to punch a time clock. And that is the way it will be from now on. No more pressure from bosses or customers with deadlines. LOL! So fun to be retired.

after this guitar was made and sat for a few months, it started to have some fret buzz. So I releveled the frets, crowned them and polished them up. Set the intonation and so on.

I used it the same way you do. It would not let me apply it heavier without dragging and attracting a lot of trash into the surface. I got very nice results with walnut veneer on my speakers.
Thanks for the comment. A lot of times it is a trial on error to get the finish we want. You are right about putting it on too heavy. Glad it all worked out for you.
Very cool! Moving along.
Thanks!
The middle sounds super tele!!! I like it. Chicken pickin tone for sure.
lol I think you are right about the chicken picking!
Excellent and clean work!!! See ya soon!!
Thanks! Yep! See ya soon!
Nice and clean work!
Thanks!
I have a very rigid schedule about when to install side dots. When I remember! Was just carving an acoustic guitar neck and realized I haven't done the side markers yet. Looking good! Every little bit gets you closer to playing it.
Thanks! I can not tell you how many times I put off doing the side markers until almost to the end of a build. lol! This time I was not going to let that happen. The fretboard is off the jig now. Now I am waiting on the weather to clear up so I get back out to the shop and get it put on to the neck.
Sounds great! Interesting about that middle setting. It does sound out of phase but normally the volume drops a lot. Doesn't sound much quieter in the middle.
I think a lot of it is the cheap bridge pickup. Not only out of faze but not a good quality pickup. I have had this problem on other guitars that I have worked on in the past. Like I said I will at some point be changing the bridge pickup to a much better one. But overall the guitar sounds much better than it did before I did all the upgrades that has been done. Wish I had gotten a video of it before I redid it.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el it didn’t sound too bad on its own.
@@jonahguitarguy I may try switching the wires around on the bridge to see how it sounds then. If I do, it will be later on. It's fine for now. I just won't use the middle. LOL!
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el that’s my thoughts on it. It works or it doesn’t. Easy enough to find out.
Nice neat wiring!
Thanks!
Nice work!
Thanks!
That's a cool guitar. Looking forward to hearing the new pickup. I can't tell any difference between string thru and top load either. So many myths in the guitar world. You're doing the one thing that really makes a difference in an electric guitar. Changing pickups!
I told my wife that I was going to go through all my guitars and do some upgrades to most of them. Since at this time I do not plan on making any more guitars the least I can do is work on them and do some things I have wanted to do for a long time. This is the first one. Got the parts in a little bit ago so I’ll be finishing it up sometime today. I’ll post another video soon.
Plug it into a peavey 5150 with ts808 and its ready to rock!!!
That would be cool! I no longer have any pedals. I could plug it into my Peavey Delta Blues amp. It has some cool distortion built into it. I may do that and make another video. Thanks for the inspiration!
Enjoying the process and learning so much!
Thank you! Glad you are picking up some learning tools.
Too cool, nice restoration in progress 👌

Love the P-90 tone! Lots of pretty wood in this one.
Thanks! Lot of people seem to like it. I have now had three people trying to buy it. But it’s not for sale. Going to keep this one.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el Every guitar I have is for sale, for the right price.
Good choice going with the Lacquer thinner. I had to use it more times then I like to admit incases where the finish got to dark or I didn't like the burst. Much better than sanding back. I know you're fighting "Chaz" keep at it!
Thanks, Dane! I almost have all stripped off now. Hope I can do more on it this up-and-coming week. I have had to take the last few days off from it. Because of my health issues. Doing the best I can.
So sorry to hear about what you are going through. Too bad doctors can't do more to help. Do what you can as you can.
I wish it would go away. But looks like I'll have to deal with it the best I can. Thanks for the comment.
I came, I saw, I watched and hit the like button! You've probably all ready sanded the body but lacquer thinner will rub that finish off. I've even even done it dry lacquer. Lot easier than sanding cause the paper is going to load up like a big dog.
I have not removed the finish yet. But I do plan on removing it, much like you said. You are right, sanding it would be a plug up problem.
It's a bummer when wood doesn't want to be what we need it ti be. Like your fretboard in this case.
Kind of like life. Not too many things go the way we want. So we have to adapt, overcome.
That is an extremely cool lil axe.
Oh good you Old Glitter out of mothballs. It will be great to see this one alive again.

No, I no longer sell guitars. It's only a hobby of mine. I once did sell them. But no longer.
Also, be sure to check out my latest video. The guitar is all done! I posted it yesterday.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el okie dokie will do. 🤙
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el one quick question I'm very concerned about when getting the supplies to make my base guitar. I dont if it matters when it comes to assembly and tone wise? Oky so I want a (non fender) design that I saw online for my bass body but the only thing is that they only have a template for 4 string. I looking for a 5 string. Is it oky to use a 4 string body and make a 5 string neck pocket etc? Would the smaller shape body mater? Any difference?
@@omarmoran3097 Yes, you can use a 4 string body for a 5 string. There are some things to look at. 1; scale length. Make sure the body can support the scale of the neck. 2; If you use a bass body that has been set up for a 4 string, and you want to make into a 5 string the neck pocket will have to be made bigger and there will be some over hang of the neck over the body. 3; a smaller shape body should not matter. But keep in mind the scale is everything. The neck will have to be the same scale that the body was made for. (If using a premade body.) I have seen where some have made bodies or used premade bodies and used too long of a scaled neck and the string are right at the end of the body. So if using a long scale, the body will need to be longer. I see people that try and convert guitars that make the mistake in what the scale of the guitar was made with. It's a problem when someone takes a scale length that was made for a Gibson and want to change it over to a fender scale length. Some bass guitars are a little easier to do because the bridges that are used and the way they mount. Some of them can be changed by simply by moving the bridge. Some are not that simple. I hope this helps. FYI there are some good DIY 5 sting kits out there.
Coming along very well! I've used five of John's P-90s never had any hum from them. But I usually paint the cavities with shielding paint for GP. I don't think it matters at all for humbuckers. But I do think the volume pot should be grounded to the tone pot. The cap is only sending high frequencies to ground. So it not a solid ground. And if the volume pot's not grounded then in theory the cap can't go to ground. I've been using .033 caps along with 300K pots on everything and I'm I'm happy with the results.
If you watch the whole video, I show that I do ground the pots with the pickup wires. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was only going to ground off of the cap. But the one leg on the volume has to go to ground. This is how I do all of my guitars. Some pots have a short leg on them and one will need to use a wire to connect the leg to the pot. So I use the wire on the tone cap. Always works. I stopped using shielding a long time ago. I found out it is not needed like, so many think so. Use good wire and do a good solder up job, also used good pots, switch, and input/output jack. Most times there is no need for shielding. But again this is one of these things that ends up being a choice.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el I watched the whole video. I looked again, I missed that you also soldered to the volume pot. It was a very quick shot.
Good vid Chaz. It will be cool to see this one finished.
Thanks! Part 2 video will be up in the next day or two. Been trying to figure out what happened to my video quality. I think I got it fixed. I’ll know more when I do some more videos. Most of part two will be like this one.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el hello, well well a very nice project you made there. I don't think fender does neck through guitars. I'm a bassist. I plan on making my own bass guitar. I like neck through bass guitars tho very afraid of messing up. So I'll probably go with set neck. I'll probably still get some good sustain then a bolt on. How did you get your dimensions? For a neck through? I'll be looking out for part 2. Cheers from U.S.A California
@@omarmoran3097 When I first started out, I bought a book on making guitars. The book told me how long the neck blank needed to be. For the guitar, I start out with a 42"blank. I think the bass is around 46" long for a neck blank. But neck through guitars are not as hard to do as you would think. In fact, I think they are easier. Look at the other videos I have that show how this guitar was made. I cover how I made the neck blank. Thanks for comment!
😊Three coats in one day? How long inbetween coats?
2 to 3 hr. between coats. After the last one, I let it set all night. Then do a lite sanding to knock off dust and to help smooth it out some. Then apply 3 more in the same way. I don't put on thick coats. Nice even thin coats work the best. Keep at it until you get the look you are wanting. Let it sit for 24 hr. Then color sand, buff, then wax it. Should be good to go.
I still c open grain - not at all like a spray job that u can now do with cans - mayb I’m just seeing the grain because it’s clear
Well, like I say in the video, I was not going for a non grain look. But it can be done. Just like a spray job, one would have to use a grain filler. With spray on lacquer or poly there is a long wait time as will. This took me only 4 days to do. You can't get there that fast with spray on. Even with spray cans without a grain filler, you will still see the grain. Spry can clear is also known for shrinkage and cracking. I just had one of my spray jobs crack all over the place. (Lacquer and cold do not play well) Never have had the Minwax tung oil finish crack or peel off or blister. I have had that happen with spray can clear and paint. But the guitar is better than it looks on the video. I didn't get any pictures of it after I applied some Minwax floor wax on it. That made a huge change in the way it looks. I sold the guitar, so I cannot get any pictures of how it looked before I sold it.
A lot of fine looking guitars you've built Chaz. But that (looks like walnut burl) tele, wow that's a beauty.
You would be right! Sold it a long time ago.
How many coats you think would be required for a more satin type of finish? Building my first guitar in a very long time and I was using Formbys but it’s been discontinued.
It really depends on how much shine you want. I find that in most cases 8 to 10 coats if you want that glossy look. I did one that came out glossy after 5 coats. I put it on over paint. But please like all things try it out before using on your project. Sometimes products don't play well together.
Hey, after looking at what you asked me. LOL! I would say about 4 to 5 coats to get a satin look. What I do is I use 0000 steel wool and go over the project once the last coat is color sanded with a 1000 grit or more wet dry. I go over it with the 0000 to make it look smoother. If you look at the guitar in the watermark, I did that one that way, plus some others. I may do a video at some point and show some of the other guitars I did in a stain look.
@StealthGuitar-mk3el Thank you very much for this tutorial and for this response in particular. I am researching ways I can refinish a walnut gun stock, and I may try this Minwax product. I will attempt a satin finish. I just watched another excellent tutorial wherein a very experienced woodworker who apprenticed under another very experienced woodworker uses the master's formula: 16 parts Minwax Tung Oil to 1 part urethane for durability. He uses the straight Minwax for the first few coats and then the mixture. Me being somewhat lazy and having seen the success of your method and knowing how unforgiving urethane can be, will likely stick with the straight Miniwax. Thanks again!
@@MichaelWhite-cx4hoYes, I know of that approach. I have not tried that yet. If you can, please let me know how it works out for you. I would interested to find out. And you are welcome!
Noice!!!! Looks yummy
Thanks!
Like your style and just subscribed. The way you take your time with the video is a constant reminder that taking your time when you work is the way to get the best results. Haven't used Minwax Tung Oil before (most of my wood finishing has been polyurethane over stain), but I am working on my first guitar - mahogany back and ambrosia maple front, and I am really looking forward to seeing how following your technique turns out. One question: how much vapor does the thin-coat process produce after cleanup, as in curing overnight? I am in Maine, it is the end of January, and I really don't want to leave windows open all night - but I also don't want to wait until spring to finish this because I am worried about inhaling this stuff. Appreciate the guidance!
I put all my used rags in the trash outside when I am done for the day. Letting it cure indoors is not all that bad. Done it a few times. But I like to use some kind of mask when applying it in a small room. I also like running a fan. I am doing a guitar right now. But I am going to wait for the weather here to change, so I can finish it out in the shop. I like to work in the shop more than in my house. I have put the finish on in the house before. But you might have to put up with the wife. LOL! But the smell doesn't last that long. Un like lacquer, Poly and others. Again, put the rags you use out in the trash. That will help a lot. I used to get excited and not want to wait on things. But these days, I am not in that big of a hurry. The build I am working on right now, I did try and rush it. But I wound up now have to wait for the weather to get better here. It's been in the teens here. I have no way to heat the shop. So I have to wait. I have other project that are also waiting. So, I am working on computers while waiting. They can be as frustrating as guitar building at times! HA! But yes, take your time. Try and get 3 coats on in a day, let it dry and reapply the next day until you get the look you want. It will get there. And really it only takes me about 4 to 5 days of applying the finish to get a glossy look. Once it's cured in 24 hr. Then you can color sand and buff it out and wax it, and you're done! There is no waiting around for weeks on end to get going with a project. I use the same stuff of furniture I make. Works out great! Good luck on your project. If there is anything I can help with, let me know. The Minwax tung oil finish is easy to work with and is forgiving in a lot of ways.
Wow! Your prompt reply is much appreciated! Yeah, my shop for now is the garage, also unheated, which is why I was asking. By the way, I have been working on computers for decades. Sorry to say, the HP died on me the day after posing this video. So I put it to rest. Pulled the memory and hard drive. I switched over to the Dell. I put the hard drive in an external box and hooked that up to the Dell for extra storage. The memory out of the HP will end up in the Dell at some point. The dell is running Debian. Thanks! I thought the same thing after I made this guitar. I thought “ I wonder if Bo Diddley” would have played this? lol! Have a Merry Christmas!
Pretty cool Chaz. You should try the open G tuning and work on Keef licks.
I did have it in G but for the video I put in standard tuning. I could have left it G tuning. But I was having some issues with my hands the day I did this video. So I did the standard tuning. I cut a lot of my playing out of this video. Because of issues with my hands. But I think the video came out alright. Now on to the next one.

@@StealthGuitar-mk3el You're bang on Justin. I can get it from Amazon but the delivery would be five times the product cost and figure in duties and taxes. My problem not yours Sir!
@@KL3NCH See, that's what I am talking about. I know thing when it comes to all the fees involved. Too bad that things are the way they are.
Looking good! The Truoil has a strong smell that lingers. But it's it's not toxic like some products. At some point I'll get around to trying the MTO.
The smell is one thing that most products have. I used a Poly rub on for a piece I did, and it took weeks for the smell to go away. The MTO has a little smell to it but is gone in a short time. I think that is why I started to use it. I could get away with using it indoors. But like all the products we use, we need to be safe. It does not hurt to have a mask on if using MTO indoors. Not too bad if you are in an open area.
"Promo SM" 🤩
I've never used the Minwax Tung Oil Finish. But the next time I do an oil finish I'ma gonna give it a whirl. You always good results with it. I'm wondering how much different it is than Truoil.
There is a little difference in the Truoil and the Minwax. The thing I remember is the Truoil is thinner than the Minwax. I think the Minwax goes on easier. It also for me took a lot more product to get to where I wanted it to be. Also, it seemed to have a worse smell about it. At that time, way back when, I was using this in my apartment. LOL! But your end results may be different from mine. But you are right, I do get some good results from it. The stuff works for me.
@@StealthGuitar-mk3el I was thinking it might be the opposite. With the TO being thicker. I use a thinned down mix of TO for the first coat to get better penetration.
This is a great moment in any build- when the wood starts to pop out. Nice work Dusty!
