Not the first... never heard of the Fardier made in France in 1769 ? Though only powered by a steam engine and not very efficient, it was the first vehicle ever using a king of "motor". Anyway, this Benz is great !

Very nice, we are building a model. Can anyone tell me how the drive works. From free to driving away, (clutch?) thanks in advance.

Don't quite me on this, but I believe I heard from a video explaining how it worked that the lever controls how tight the belt connecting the right wheel's axle to the engine. The further the lever is pulled downwards, the tighter the belt and therefore the more power being transferred therefore more speed. With the lever pulled back all the way, the belt is effectively slack and doesn't make enough power to propel the car. Again, don't quote me on that but I think that's what I heard. P.S, there is no clutch as such, it only has one forward gear, with the throttle being a small, turntable knob/wheel under the seat.

I'm in the process of building a replica now from what I was able to find on the drive belt system. There are three drums on the drive shaft. The one most right is and idler which turns at the speed of the engine. the middle one is the actual drive and differential which turns the wheels. What appears to happen is when the engine is started the belt is on the idler and the car does not move when your want to go forward the leaver is moved forward and the belt is moved slowly from the idler drum to the drive drum, the car starts to move, when the lever is moved all the way forward it is completely on the drive drum. The third drum is the brake drum. when the leaver is moved all the way back the belt moves to the idler drum and the brake band is applied the third brake drum. From all the videos I've seen I don't see any belt tensioning device. I'm going to be able see a car in march so I will have more info.

I Gotta say, I love your Videos. I'm a big fan! I make compilation videos where I take clips from other videos add some information, do my own voiceover and then play music over them. I was just wondering if I could have your permission to use 20 seconds max of this video. Obviously, the link will be in the description and all credit will be rewarded to you. If you are not sure, check out my channel and read the description of my recent videos an see what I mean

Sorry, but that is not accurate. Plenty of things were called automobiles after this. And plenty before. For instance, the oldest running car: newatlas.com/worlds-oldest-running-car-for-sale/19924/ czcams.com/video/riO3UUC9qo0/video.html But there were automobiles before that, buses, carriages, traction engines. Britain invented this, France continued development when England outlawed it, Germany third. But sure, the Germans developed lots of other stuff, but not EVERYTHING. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_steam_road_vehicles

@xellossaxon "Car" came from the french Charrette or Char. that mean a carriage pulled by horse. Automobile is also coming from a french word. the first car were basicaly double bicycle with engine made in france. many people improoved upun this invention.

Sorry but the car is a German invention. Of course there were horseless carriages before that, but Karl Benz his car is the first car. Steam cars were very unsafe, like you saw on the „Puffing Devil“ invented by the inventor of the locomotive in 1801. (Spoiler: it exploded). Karl Benz car is rightful the first car, though the French can say that they built the first car to reach a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. And there was a petrol powered vehicle before this. It was built by German inventor Siegfried Marcus in 1875 and it still exists in Vienna. But like every other vehicle before Benz, they were not practical.
